Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Player Gets Incredibly Lucky When Shiny Hunting

A player discovered a rare, shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen surprisingly quickly. Finding a shiny Pokemon in these older games is incredibly rare, especially considering how difficult it is to increase your chances of encountering one. Usually, finding a shiny version of a Pokemon requires a lot of time and patience.

Okay, so Mewtwo is a classic – everyone knows it as the Genetic Pokémon! It’s been around since the very beginning, in the first Pokémon games. As a Psychic-type, it’s seriously powerful. I always dread facing one because it can blast you with moves like Psychic and Shadow Ball, and even wreck you with Hyper Beam. It can also use Calm Mind to just get even stronger during a battle, boosting its special attack and defense. Sure, Bug and Dark-type moves can hurt it, but in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Mewtwo is widely considered the strongest Psychic-type out there. It’s just got amazing stats and can learn so many different moves, making it a real threat.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Player Did Not Have To Wait Long To Catch a Shiny Mewtwo

Finding Shiny Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen typically takes a long time, but one player had amazing luck hunting Shiny Mewtwo. On the FireRed subreddit, a user named Stankyswag posted a picture of the rare Pokémon they found at the end of Cerulean Cave. Stankyswag said it only took them under 30 encounters to find Shiny Mewtwo, which is incredibly lucky! Each Pokémon in these games has just a 1 in 8,192 (about 0.012%) chance of being a Shiny, making this encounter after roughly 30 tries truly remarkable.

Okay, so I was watching Stankyswag play Pokemon FireRed on Switch, and they ran into Mewtwo! It got me thinking about Shiny hunting in those older games. Unlike newer Pokemon titles, FireRed and LeafGreen don’t have any features to help you find Shiny Pokemon. You basically just have to save right before the Mewtwo battle and keep resetting the game until you get a Shiny one. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to soft-reset on the Switch version – you just hold down A, B, X, and Y all at the same time. But you have to be careful! Those buttons are really close together on the Joy-Cons and Pro Controller, so it’s easy to accidentally reset at the wrong moment and lose any progress you made since your last save.

Encountering a Shiny Legendary Pokemon Is No Easy Task

Hunting for the shiny version of Mewtwo in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen requires a lot of time and perseverance, as Mewtwo doesn’t move from its location. Abilities that increase encounter rates with wild Pokemon, like those on Staryu, don’t help when hunting stationary Legendary Pokemon. You can only find Mewtwo after becoming the Pokemon League Champion by defeating the Elite Four and finishing the main story, which allows you to enter Cerulean Cave.

While newer Pokémon games have made it much easier to find Shiny Pokémon, it’s still never a sure thing. With Pokémon Winds and Waves currently in development, it remains to be seen if finding Shiny Pokémon will change when the tenth generation of games arrives in 2027.
