As a long-time fan of One Piece, I can confidently say that another timeskip is not only possible but inevitable. Having followed Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates for over two decades, I’ve grown accustomed to the ebb and flow of time in this extraordinary world.

The epic saga of “One Piece” has now reached its climax, making it an incredibly thrilling ride. This part, known as the Final Saga, is the culmination of the story post-timeskip in “One Piece”. It’s where creator Oda will pen some of the most exhilarating and pulse-pounding battles the story has ever seen. As we near the end of this grand journey, Luffy is poised to achieve his dream by discovering Laugh Tale, the Final Island, and seizing the “One Piece”.

Time jumps can be a powerful storytelling tool for authors, enabling them to develop their characters effectively. However, it’s crucial that there’s a convincing catalyst for the time jump to commence. Once the necessary circumstances are fulfilled, the characters reappear older and, significantly, more resilient and mature than before. For instance, in the popular series One Piece, following the Summit War, a time jump occurred. Luffy couldn’t save Ace during the war, despite his best efforts. This tragic outcome nearly made him abandon his pirate dreams. However, he pressed on and eventually found guidance from Rayleigh, who advised him to train for two years to prevent similar misfortunes in the future.

After spending two years training, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are more than prepared for the challenges of the New World, as fans have come to expect them to conquer one obstacle after another in the post-timeskip of “One Piece.” Currently, Luffy is even considered a Yonko, deserving of admiration, and he’s almost within reach of the coveted One Piece. However, it seems another timeskip may be on the horizon for the series. The question remains when this timeskip will occur.

The question of whether One Piece needs a second timeskip or not is certainly one that would split opinions among the fans. There are numerous fans who believe that the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey has not continued for long enough and that they have not spent enough time within the One Piece world with each other. To a certain degree, this is true. Luffy sailed with the Straw Hat Pirates for a couple of months in the pre-timeskip, and after reuniting, once again, for a couple of months in the post-timeskip. In fact, ever since the conception of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy and the Straw Hats have spent less time together than they have apart, and the timeskip sees to that. It would make sense for the Straw Hat Pirates to sail the seas for longer and for there to be more timeskips in One Piece, be they big or small.

Simultaneously, leaps in time are an effective method for character development, allowing them to not only grow up but also become stronger. Fans eagerly anticipate the matured version of Luffy, as well as characters like Zoro, Sanji, and others. In this regard, another timeskip is truly exciting.

In considering whether a timeskip is essential or not, it’s evident that One Piece doesn’t require another one. While there might be an argument for a training timeskip if Luffy wasn’t as powerful as he currently is, his status as a Yonko suggests he can grow stronger in the heat of battle. Therefore, introducing a timeskip solely for character growth seems redundant, at least for the time being.

In simpler terms, although a time jump could add excitement, it isn’t crucial for the plot progression. However, according to what the author has mentioned, there might be a time jump in the future of One Piece.

Oda Wants To Depict Luffy’s Whole Life

It came as a shock to many fans that creator Eiichiro Oda has hinted at advancing the timeline in “One Piece” before, though not explicitly. Back in 2016, Oda discussed his plans for drawing Luffy’s journey, expressing his desire to illustrate Luffy’s life from start to finish, all the way up until the end. Here’s what he stated:

It’s amazing to think that, even after 20 years, I still haven’t completed ONE PIECE! But rest assured, I will bring the incredible story of a pirate named Luffy to its full conclusion. – Oda (2016)

From what I gather directly from Oda’s statements, he’s planning to depict Luffy’s entire life story in “One Piece.” This could unfold in two intriguing ways. Firstly, if Luffy were to meet an untimely end at a young age, Oda might delve into those events across the remaining arcs of the Final Saga. Or, alternatively, we might witness a monumental time jump within the storyline itself! I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds!

Considering Oda’s aversion to eliminating significant characters, it seems highly unlikely that he plans to eliminate Luffy prematurely, given Luffy is the main character. Such an action could potentially be disastrous for Oda. Instead, it appears that Oda intends for there to be another time jump, allowing him to fully explore the life of the Great Pirate Luffy until the very end, as he had promised. The timing of this time jump is uncertain, but it may follow a pattern similar to the pre-timeskip, with Luffy engaging in a major conflict towards the end. It’s possible that a similar situation might occur here as well.

Currently, Luffy is almost on the verge of acquiring the One Piece. At this point, it seems unlikely that the series will introduce a time skip. Instead, Luffy will continue his journey as an 19-year-old for now and eventually obtain the One Piece. However, once he does, there might be a chance for a time skip to occur. This time skip could either be brief, happening immediately after, or it could take place post Great War, allowing us to catch up with our beloved characters a few years later as they’ve grown older. Such an event would offer Oda the chance to introduce a second time skip into One Piece, and while it isn’t necessary, it would certainly add an exciting twist to the narrative.
