Many Pokémon Trainers are consistently portrayed as either skilled battlers or frequent losers, no matter what version of the story you’re watching or reading. But this isn’t true for everyone – some Trainers are famous in one version of the story, but have a very different reputation in another.
The anime often portrays certain characters as very powerful, especially those who train with Ash. However, in the manga, Pokemon Adventures, their abilities are noticeably weaker, ranging from slight reductions to major nerfs, making them less effective in battles.
5. Erika
Celadon City Gym Leader
I remember visiting Celadon City and meeting Erika, the Gym Leader there. She specializes in Grass-type Pokémon and has a really strong team. While I didn’t actually see her have a full battle with Ash in the anime, it was clear she’s a skilled trainer. What stood out to me was how she thinks during a battle – she’s very strategic. She doesn’t just rely on powerful attacks; she really tries to control the battlefield and use things like status conditions to her advantage.
In the manga version of the story, Erika isn’t portrayed as much of a Gym Leader. Instead, the focus is on Team Rocket’s attempt to control Celadon City. She doesn’t get many opportunities to demonstrate her battling skills, as the story usually centers around Red or Blue. Even though she isn’t as powerful in the manga, Erika effectively defends her city after joining the fight against Team Rocket.
4. Lt. Surge
Gym Leader of Vermilion City
Lt. Surge presents a tough exterior, drawing on his military experience to approach Pokémon battles with a war-like strategy. He’s a forceful competitor who relies on strong Electric-type Pokémon like Raichu and Electabuzz to secure victory. Notably, in the anime, Ash struggles against Lt. Surge and initially loses to him.
While Lt. Surge remains a powerful character in the manga, his influence doesn’t last long. He isn’t as strategically gifted as Red and would probably have a hard time winning against any of the Elite Four. Sadly, the story doesn’t give Lt. Surge enough screen time in Pokemon Adventures to fully showcase his abilities.

3. Professor Oak
A Mentor and Scientist
Professor Oak is known as a guide and scientist to trainers like Ash and Red, but it’s also hinted he was a remarkably skilled Pokémon Trainer himself. The anime frequently mentions his past expertise and shows his confidence in battle. However, the manga portrays him with a very different personality.
In the Pokemon Adventures manga, Professor Oak is primarily known for his work as a researcher. Because of this focus, his history as a powerful Pokemon Trainer is never explored, and he doesn’t get a chance to demonstrate his battling skills. Essentially, the manga doesn’t highlight his past strength as a Trainer, and his combat abilities remain unproven.
2. Brock
Pewter City Gym Leader
Brock is a well-known character in the Pokemon anime series. He’s been a close friend of Ash for a long time, and together with Misty, they’ve journeyed alongside him, frequently battling other trainers. As the Pewter City Gym Leader, his strong abilities in the show are understandable.
The manga series Pokemon Adventures portrays Brock quite differently. He’s not as skilled as he appears in other versions, and a beginner trainer named Red actually defeats him easily. Even though Red struggles during the battle, he’s just starting his journey, highlighting Brock’s lack of experience and tactical thinking. Overall, the Brock in the manga is a noticeably different character.
1. Misty
Cerulean City Gym Leader
Misty is a key character who travels with Ash and Brock throughout the Pokemon anime series. She’s a skilled and confident Trainer, and also serves as the Gym Leader for Cerulean City. She frequently joins Ash and Brock in battles and consistently wins against many different opponents they encounter on their journey.
In the Pokemon Adventures manga, Misty, like Brock, doesn’t have a central role. With the story largely following Blue and Red, Misty mainly appears as a supporting Gym Leader and isn’t frequently featured in individual Pokemon battles. She participates in team fights, but isn’t heavily involved in Red’s journey, and ultimately doesn’t get much opportunity to showcase her skills, similar to Brock.
