It’s Official: The New Day Has Left WWE

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, formerly of the popular WWE group The New Day, have left the company. The New Day was a consistent presence in the tag team scene for many years, and the duo is widely considered one of the best tag teams in WWE history.

This news follows a recent wave of releases from WWE that have significantly impacted its tag team division. After WrestleMania 42, the entire Wyatt Sicks group and the Motor City Machine Guns were let go. Kairi Sane, who was part of both the Damage CTRL storyline and the Kabuki Warriors tag team, was also released, along with other wrestlers like Aleistar Black, Zelina Vega, and Santos Escobar. As of May 2nd, JC Mateo and Tonga Loa have also been released by the company.

The New Day Left WWE

On May 2nd, wrestling fans noticed The New Day was moved to the alumni section of WWE’s website, suggesting they were no longer active wrestlers for the company. While some thought this was an error – similar things had happened before and been fixed – reports soon confirmed that Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods had agreed to leave WWE.

For several years, The New Day hadn’t been featured prominently on WWE television, mostly appearing in behind-the-scenes segments. While their turn to the ‘bad guy’ side at the end of 2024 – particularly their betrayal of Big E with a harsh and impactful promo – was a major career moment, WWE didn’t follow through with it. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods have both been with WWE since the mid to late 2000s, and they first teamed up as The New Day in 2014 with Big E, before his neck injury.

Besides wrestling every week, The New Day did a ton of stuff for WWE outside the ring – commercials, the UpUpDownDown podcast, and really got into WWE gaming. I’ve always seen Xavier Woods as a huge part of the WWE 2K games, especially the MyGM modes, and it’s awesome that he’s still involved in WWE 2K26!

It’s obvious WWE is undergoing significant changes. Between recent talent cuts and an increase in advertising, the company looks different. While some of these changes make sense, letting go of The New Day is a real loss for WWE. Currently, their future is unknown, and everything is just guesswork, but it’s easy to picture them joining forces elsewhere and becoming a major highlight of another wrestling promotion’s tag team scene.
