As a child of the 80’s and 90’s, these classic Disney games bring back a flood of memories that seem like yesterday. Antstream Arcade has done a fantastic job in preserving these gems from my youth, allowing me to relive those moments of joy, frustration, and triumph all over again.

Along the way, I must outrun a relentless wildebeest stampede, drive away the menacing hyenas from Pride Rock, and ultimately vanquish the malevolent Scar.

Initially, the response to this game wasn’t as favorable as Aladdin when it first came out. However, I found it to be the most impressive among the new additions. The pixel graphics are stunning, and the film’s tunes fit exceptionally well into the retro-style soundtrack. In fact, I might have lost a life or two because I was so absorbed in singing along to the background music during gameplay. Simba’s gameplay is distinctive, as he begins as a tiny cub with a barely audible “roar” and grows stronger, acquiring additional roars and Flip and Maul abilities. Additionally, I appreciated the mini-games that popped up between levels, allowing you to play as characters like Timon and Pumbaa.

Aladdin: One Jump Ahead (And Then Another, And Then Another)

Initially released as a tie-in for the movie “Aladdin”, this game was highly acclaimed as one of the finest games during its time, and it continues to impress in several aspects today. It remains enjoyable, skillfully incorporates its storyline, and features some challenging boss battles, particularly against Jafar. Among these three experiences, it is arguably the most demanding due to Aladdin’s unique combat style involving swordplay and apple-based long-range attacks, which may require some practice to master, and the enemy population remains high even in early stages.

Without a doubt, this game expertly utilizes its original source material. The Genie is intelligently incorporated without overwhelming players. Gems are gathered to gain “Wishes,” which provide power-ups and sometimes offer assistance in tight spots. However, the Genie doesn’t simply overpower the levels by one-shotting them. Various elements from the movie are also integrated throughout – Abu gets his moment in bonus rounds, the Merchant pops up during levels selling extra lives and other items, the Sultan continues to express his bewilderment about the situation, among other things. This game offers a challenging experience for beginners unfamiliar with the original, but it’s definitely worth playing.

The Jungle Book: I’m The King Of The Swingers

In this exhilarating platformer adaptation of Disney’s The Jungle Book, I, Mowgli, find myself on a quest to rejoin my fellow humans in the man village. Throughout my journey, I’ll rely on friends like Baloo and Bagheera for assistance, while steering clear of adversaries such as the menacing Shere Khan. With nimble movements, I can navigate the jungle by swinging, climbing, and leaping, but beware – it seems that every creature in this wilderness has it out for the hapless “man-cub” like me!

The game doesn’t quite match the peaks of Aladdin or The Lion King, but it still offers a dose of nostalgia that hits the spot. Its main issues lie in the repetitiveness of its levels, as they predominantly take place in similar jungle settings, and its music, which isn’t particularly captivating. Unlike the other two games, this one doesn’t make much effort to show characters in small scenes or use movie dialogue or narration. However, Mowgli’s movement is enjoyable, and performing some of his daring “swinging” stunts in later levels can be quite thrilling when you manage to pull them off successfully.

Final Thoughts

In the days ahead, Antstream Arcade intends to enrich its collection with additional timeless Disney games, such as “Goof Troop” and “Bonkers”. Players can look forward to playing these games alongside classics like “The Lion King”, “The Jungle Book”, and “Aladdin”.
