As a seasoned pirate who’s seen it all, from the treacherous waters of the Grand Line to the political intrigue of the New World, I’ve come across my fair share of peculiar characters, each with their unique abilities and weaknesses. But none quite compare to these five individuals whose lives seem to be inextricably linked to their Devil Fruits, for better or for worse.
To clarify, every Devil Fruit has the ability to be mastered further and in rare instances, even surpass a specific level. However, it’s important to note that a weak user of a Devil Fruit doesn’t imply a powerless fruit; instead, it refers to individuals who haven’t yet fully harnessed the abilities of their particular fruit.
In a peculiar twist, some seemingly harmless items such as thread or Japanese rice cake could transform into deadly tools when wielded by skilled fighters. Conversely, it’s equally important to note that an inept user can potentially weaken or even squander the potential of a Devil Fruit, which at minimum, possesses some degree of power. These users often lack combat prowess, and their inherent weaknesses might even negate the advantages that their Devil Fruits could otherwise bestow upon them.
5. Buggy
Failure Falling Upwards
- Debut: Chapter 9 (Manga); Episode 4 (Anime)
- Devil Fruit: Bara Bara no Mi
- Devil Fruit Class: Paramecia
Perhaps Buggy is known as the symbol of feeble pirates, but his notoriety is frequently attributed to the company he keeps. His genuine abilities are showcased in forging alliances and persuading others to fight under his command. Even his appointment as a figurehead in Cross Guild, the latest position he’s assumed through force, has allowed him to regain power from the true leaders by inspiring his crewmates to rally behind his ambition of becoming the Pirate King.
Despite his mediocre fighting abilities, the true potential of Buggy’s Devil Fruit might go unnoticed. Although Buggy manages to hold his own in fights, given his unique style of piracy, a more experienced fighter could potentially harness its power more effectively. The extended range, self-regeneration capabilities, and adaptability for creative combat strategies could be exceptionally powerful in the hands of a skilled combatant. However, for Buggy the clown, these abilities are better suited to adding humor to his pirate exploits.
4. Pierre
And The Most Redundant Devil Fruit Goes To…
- Debut: Chapter 237 (Manga); Episode 153 (Anime)
- Devil Fruit: Uma Uma no Mi
- Devil Fruit Class: Zoan
Pierre isn’t known for being a weak fighter; instead, he’s been by the side of Gan Fall, the deity of Skypiea, for quite some time. He courageously joins his master in battle. With his Devil Fruit, he can change his form into that of a horse, effectively serving as a steed for Gan Fall during combat. To those not familiar with this world, it might seem like an advantageous Devil Fruit for Pierre.
The main issue lies in the fact that Gan Fall could easily perch on Pierre, who was large enough to accommodate him in his bird form. Despite Pierre’s pegasus form being visually appealing, it doesn’t significantly impact his combat style, except for the rare instance of a bite he might deliver when transformed into a horse. A creature that could more effectively utilize the characteristics of a horse, such as a human or another animal, would be a more suitable choice over a bird that can already be ridden by its owner.
3. Funkfreed
A Sentient Sword
- Debut: Chapter 365 (Manga); Episode 254 (Anime)
- Devil Fruit: Zou Zou no Mi
- Devil Fruit Class: Zoan
In its basic state, the large sword known as Funkfreed belongs to Spandam, a former head of Cipher Pol 9. His role in CP9 was not earned through talent, but rather due to nepotism. Spandam is well-known for his poor combat skills, arguably one of the worst in the series. He primarily relies on this same sword for self-defense, a weapon he’s unskilled in wielding. Somehow, mysteriously, this sword ingested a Zoan Devil Fruit, gaining consciousness and the ability to transform into an elephant.
Unfortunately, Funkfreed seems to share its owner’s cowardice, despite having the ability to catch people off guard or overpower them in certain situations. It’s worth noting that Franky was able to manipulate the sword even when it was transformed into an elephant, with minimal effort. Some might argue that this is a characteristic of the Devil Fruit, as Zoans are known for having independent minds. However, if a user as powerful as Jack the Drought, who wields an ancient variant of the Zou Zou no Mi, were to consume this Devil Fruit, they could potentially pose a much greater threat than Funkfreed.
2. Gecko Moria
Carried By His Devil Fruit
- Debut: Chapter 449 (Manga); Episode 343 (Anime)
- Devil Fruit: Kage Kage no Mi
- Devil Fruit Class: Paramecia
Gecko Moria is a formidable adversary, albeit one that instills a sense of fear. His skills include controlling the shadows of others, summoning powerful minions, and boosting himself with shadows to amplify his size and power. However, when disregarding his Devil Fruit abilities, Gecko Moria is financially inadequate as a pirate. Following his defeat at the hands of Kaido, which led to the demise of his former crew members, he has chosen a different path: pursuing the title of Pirate King. To achieve this goal, he has opted to rely on others more than before. He frequently employs his Devil Fruit to control his own shadow in combat, and exhibits greater excitement in directing others to battle for him instead.
Previously, Moria struggled managing the Straw Hats at Thriller Bark, prompting his associate, Kuma, to be sent there unwillingly to resolve the issue. This incompetence led to his removal from the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Doflamingo was assigned to eliminate him during the Summit War, but failed. Later, another former Warlord, Jimbei, mentioned that Moria had weakened due to neglecting his training. More recently, Moria and his comrade Perona managed to break free from the Blackbeard Pirates’ grasp. It remains uncertain if Moria will strive to enhance his worthiness of his Devil Fruit abilities in the future.
1. Kurozumi Orochi
Wasted A Mythical Zoan
- Debut: Chapter 927 (Manga); Episode 921 (Anime)
- Devil Fruit: Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi
- Devil Fruit Class: Mythical Zoan
Kurozumi Orochi is first and foremost not a fighter. Although he shows some skill with a gun, he is an inferior combatant overall compared to Kozuki Oden, and has had propaganda created to counter this fact. He took advantage of Kaido’s power to become shogun, and instead made use of the Beasts Pirates, as well as his own servants, to intimidate others into obeying him. When Kaido no longer saw any use for the selfish Shogun, he beheaded him in an attempt to directly usurp his political power. That being said, Kaido failed, due to the stupidly good Zoan Devil Fruit Orochi consumed. Orochi’s Devil Fruit allows him to transform into the fabled Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed serpent from Japanese Mythology.
It’s quite over-the-top that Orochi had seven additional heads, given his cunning and snake-like persona. Notably, the nine red scabbards simultaneously beheaded Orochi six times. His last head (alongside his body) met its end after being sliced by Denjiro, followed by being burned alive by Kozuki Hiyori. Despite Orochi prolonging his own defeat, a truly skilled fighter might have kept a few more heads alive.
