As a longtime observer of the anime industry, I must say that witnessing the triumph of “Solo Leveling” at the Astra TV Awards was a truly exhilarating moment. With its action-packed narrative and high-quality animation, it’s no wonder this series has captured the hearts of many. The accolade is well-deserved, especially considering the stiff competition from other renowned series.

“Solo Leveling, a popular anime this year, has been highly anticipated since it’s based on a Korean novel (and later a web comic). It didn’t disappoint, delivering high-quality animation filled with action that left the public impressed. Critics and review aggregator services have mostly given it positive reviews.

The initial work of author Chugong was first published on KakaoPage between 2016 and 2018, with the manhwa adaptation by the late DUBU also appearing on the same platform during that time. In South Korea, the print version is distributed by D&C Media. Both the novel and comic versions are licensed by Yen Press in English-speaking regions. Additionally, authorized English translations can be found online on platforms such as Tapas, TappyToon, and Pocket Comics.

Lately, it was announced that the Solo Leveling anime adaptation received its first accolade. Specifically, it won the title of Outstanding Anime Series at the Astra TV Awards. The other contenders in this category were Blue Eye Samura, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Ninja Kamui, Pluto and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Aleks Le, who voices the main character Sung Jinwoo in English, accepted the award on behalf of the production team.

What are the Astra TV Awards?

Each year, the Astra TV Awards are given out in a ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Creative Alliance (HCA), an organization dedicated to promoting diversity, accessibility, and cultural richness within the entertainment industry. The HCA, which was established in 2016 as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, is made up of creators, critics, journalists, content producers, and influential figures from the industry. Their founder and CEO, Scott Menzel, strives to give a platform to underrepresented voices. They have been organizing awards ceremonies since 2018.

Originally scheduled for August, I found myself waiting a few extra months to attend the 4th Astra TV Awards – they eventually took place on December 8, 2024.

Solo Leveling: ReAwankening now in theaters

Beginning next month, “Solo Leveling” will resume with new episodes, yet fans can catch a glimpse beforehand by experiencing the film “Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-” now playing in cinemas. The movie offers a recap of the initial season and also previews the first two episodes from the forthcoming season.

In the series titled “Solo Leveling: Emerging from the Shadows,” the upcoming second season consists of 13 episodes and delves into the events of the Red Gate Arc.
