As a lifelong fan of superheroes and a connoisseur of great acting performances, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns, and the casting of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Having grown up watching Kyle in Friday Night Lights, Bloodline, and countless other roles, I have no doubt that he will bring an authenticity and depth to Hal Jordan that we haven’t seen before on screen.
Actor Kyle Chandler, known for playing Green Lantern, recently took a picture with a fan which appears to hint at his appearance as Hal Jordan in the DC Universe. The depiction seems to align with a particular well-known representation of the classic DC character.
A Green Lantern HBO series titled Lanterns was one of the first projects announced when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn unveiled his initial slate for the new DCU (DCU) franchise. Gunn described Lanterns as an Earth-based TV mystery show in the vein of HBO’s True Detective, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart discovering a “terrifying mystery” that ties into the DCU’s overarching story. Over a year later, Aaron Pierre was cast as John Stewart, and Kyle Chandler was tapped to play Hal Jordan. With filming expected to begin soon, Chandler is sporting a new look that likely reveals his appearance as Hal Jordan in the DCU.
An image of actor Chandler has been shared online, showing him sporting a long beard and medium-length hair. Fans have pointed out that his current appearance resembles the style portrayed by Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern: Earth One comic book series, written by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko. Since filming for Lanterns is set to begin in January 2025, it seems this could be Chandler’s appearance as Hal Jordan in the upcoming production. Although there’s a chance that Chandler might trim his beard or cut his hair once Lanterns starts shooting, this isn’t a style he often adopts during breaks between projects.
In the upcoming storyline, John Stewart is introduced as the latest Green Lantern Corps recruit, teaming up with established Green Lantern legend, Hal Jordan, to solve a murder in the Midwest. Chandler’s Jordan, with his full beard and medium gray hair, portrays an older, seasoned Green Lantern. Previously, viewers last encountered Hal Jordan in Ryan Reynolds’ “Green Lantern” film where he was a fresh recruit receiving his power-granting ring. By casting Chandler as a veteran member of the Green Lantern Corps, the DCU version of Hal Jordan is differentiated from Reynolds’ criticized portrayal.
The response to Chandler’s proposed Green Lantern appearance has been predominantly favorable. On Reddit, many fans are in agreement with the Earth One look, suggesting that Gunn and the creative team behind the Lanterns are on the right path. Despite the negative reviews of Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie, many still view the character as an iconic DC hero alongside Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. As a result, there is great anticipation for a live-action adaptation that does justice to the character. So far, it appears that Lanterns is treating Hal Jordan and John Stewart with the respect they deserve.
Lanterns will be released on HBO.
