As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, the announcement of Borderlands 4 in 2025 has filled me with unbridled excitement! The return of split-screen co-op, a feature that’s been synonymous with the series since its inception, is music to my ears.
It’s now official: When Borderlands 4 releases in 2025, it will offer split-screen cooperative play. The split-screen co-op mode has been a defining characteristic of the Borderlands series since its debut in 2009, but there was always some doubt whether this beloved feature would make a comeback in Borderlands 4.
In recent times, numerous franchises have chosen to eliminate split-screen and multiplayer from the same couch options. A prominent instance is “Halo Infinite,” which debuted without any cooperative mode for its campaign, not even the traditional split-screen co-op – a first for this series. Given that other first-person shooter games are also dropping split-screen co-op, it’s reasonable that fans might worry that “Borderlands 4” could take the same route.
Luckily, Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will support split-screen co-op. Borderlands 4 split-screen co-op will allow two players to play through the entire game as one of the four playable Vault Hunters that were shown off in the latest trailer but still have yet to be fully detailed. Up to four players will be able to enjoy Borderlands 4 online as well. Assuming Borderlands 4 is as high quality as previous games in the series, chances are good that it will turn out to be one of the best new co-op games released in all of 2025.
Borderlands 4 Co-Op Details
- 2-player split-screen
- 4-player online
It remains uncertain if Borderlands 4’s split-screen functionality will perform smoothly in gameplay, given my experience with technical issues while playing split-screen on Borderlands 3. However, since we won’t truly know until the release of the game, fans should stay open to this possibility. Nonetheless, I prefer a less-than-perfect split-screen mode over no split-screen at all, so I’m glad that it’s included in Borderlands 4, regardless of its final performance.
In the interim, the recently unveiled trailer for Borderlands 4 disclosed some thrilling fresh insights about the venture. Although responses from fans on the Vault Hunter designs have been varied, numerous individuals have voiced their appreciation towards the game’s new elements such as the grappling hook and the ease of summoning vehicles during exploration within the game world. It has also been verified that Borderlands 4 will feature fewer loading screens compared to previous games in the series, a change that should significantly enhance the gaming experience.
In addition, Borderlands 4 has unveiled its antagonist – a fresh threat called The Timekeeper. Further information about The Timekeeper won’t be disclosed until later, but it will surely be intriguing to compare him with the other formidable foes in the Borderlands series.
