Elder Scrolls Online Devs Are Stopping Annual Chapter Updates

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia as I read about Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) shaking things up for 2025. Having played since its launch back in 2014, I’ve grown accustomed to the annual chapter updates that have been a mainstay of the game since 2017. From Morrowind to Gold Road, each update brought fresh content and adventures to explore.

According to a recent blog post from ZeniMax Online Studios, they plan to stop releasing yearly expansion chapters that began in 2017, starting in 2025. The journey started with “Morrowind”, and the latest addition was “Gold Road”.

Moving ahead, the rhythm of their workflow is set to shift, as they plan to abandon the extensive chapters that are usually published in June and instead adopt a model based on seasons. This change will enable them to distribute content regularly throughout the year, rather than rushing to meet the annual deadline for a new chapter in June.

‘Shaking Things Up’

On the official Elder Scrolls Online website, Matt Firor, the game’s head director, outlined the upcoming chapter modifications for ESO that will be implemented in 2025.

At the end of last year, we gave a slight heads up that we would be shaking things up.

Moving forward towards 2025, our focus shifts from solely story content to catering to various player types within ESO. Consequently, we’re stepping away from Chapters and instead, directing our efforts towards developing new kinds of content and adopting a fresh release strategy.

In the year 2025, we’re planning to shift our content delivery approach from annual large updates to a seasonal model. Instead of one big update each year like Chapters, we will break it down into smaller, more frequent updates that last for three or six months at a time. These segments will be referred to as “Seasons.” During these Seasons, you can look forward to a blend of themed narrative content, events, merchandise in our store, dungeons, and other exciting elements. We’ll discuss this transition more in the coming times, but for now, get ready for a fresh change in 2025!

This redesign aims to provide more flexibility for our development team by alleviating the pressure of adhering to an annual release schedule, a practice we’ve followed diligently for the past seven years. In his blog post, Firor highlighted shifts in the gaming industry, evolving player preferences, and the rise and fall of competing games as key factors driving this significant overhaul.

In other words, from now on, gamers shouldn’t anticipate a significant overhaul annually, but rather smaller, frequent updates approximately every couple of months.

According to Firor, this change is driven by the community and aims to make the team less routine or unsurprising.

2025 looks set to see an ambitious plan unfold, with the team currently focused on creating fresh narrative content within established regions. They’re also aiming to enhance the initial user experience, as well as shedding more light on notable factions such as The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild.

The improvements will be accompanied by updates in user interfaces, aesthetic refinements, adjustments to animations, and optimization for game speed – just as you’d anticipate. Despite being over a decade old, ZeniMax Online Studios continues to be diligent about implementing such upgrades for The Elder Scrolls Online.
