As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen countless expansions and DLCs come and go, but the Vanir DLC for Songs of Conquest is truly a breath of fresh air. Having delved deep into Norse mythology during my college days, I can appreciate the attention to detail and authenticity in this expansion. The transformation mechanic adds a layer of strategy that’s both refreshing and challenging.
Coffee Stain Publishing and Lavapotion recently unveiled Vanir, their initial downloadable content (DLC) for the exceptional turn-based game titled “Songs of Conquest.
The team explains: “Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian legends and Norse mythology, the Vanir DLC brings a fresh addition to the lineup – the Vanir faction. Unique among the five factions, the Vanir have a special transformation ability that sets them apart. Players can opt either to stick with the faction’s warlike history or tap into ancient magic to transform their units into legendary creatures boasting new skills and appearances.
Fresh additions feature ominous boars that can’t meet their end, spooky beings wielding cursed violins, and chilling leaders capable of morphing into colossal titans. These two forms for each unit introduce novel elements to standard gameplay, generating a wealth of fresh tactical possibilities for players to exploit.
The DLC includes nine fresh Wielder hero units and seven new playfields for enthusiasts to showcase their abilities. It features five diverse Conquest maps for various scales, where the Vanir clash with existing factions in a battle of power, skill, and alertness. Additionally, it offers two narrative-driven Challenge maps: players can guide Jarn Steadfast as he battles the Vanir’s Vildra corruption or accompany the homeward journey of the wandering troll Sorg.
Included in the Vanir faction DLC:
- A new biome with snow, ice, and ruins to explore
- 8 troops with new traits and abilities
- Upgrading Vanir troops often change the troop completely, mechanically and visually
- 9 Wielders with both new and old specializations
- Town and settlements with new buildings
- Access to Essence of Destruction, Arcana and Chaos
- New styles of play with more easily accessed dyads
- 5 new Conquest maps highlighting the Vanir Biome and faction
- 2 new Challenge maps to test your skills and knowledge of this new faction
Carl Toftfelt, our lead game designer at Lavapotion, shared that we’re passionate about designing unique and cutting-edge experiences for our players. The Vanir DLC perfectly embodies this, with its novel transformation features enriching traditional gameplay, alongside folklore-inspired units such as the Bacahorse. He also highlighted the new Conquest maps as a must-try, offering fans an immersive exploration of everything the DLC has to offer, from the frozen landscapes and ruins to the quirky new units.
Songs of Conquest is out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X. The “Vanir” DLC is out now on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG for PC.
