As I delve into this compelling narrative, I find myself deeply moved by the journey of Marie-Philip Poulin, a trailblazer in women’s hockey and a testament to the power of perseverance. Her life story is one that resonates with me on a personal level, as we both share a passion for sports and a relentless drive to break barriers.
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), a relatively new North American hockey organization, has made its debut in the NHL 25 video game. As the league was established just a year ago, this move signifies a significant advancement for the PWHL and also marks progress towards representation within the NHL 25 game, which is the latest installment in EA Sports’ popular hockey series.
On December 5th, an update was made to EA’s NHL series, specifically NHL 25. This update introduced the PWHL (Professional Women’s Hockey League). Players can now engage in games as athletes from the six teams within the league, across various game modes offered by NHL 25. Additionally, players have access to these teams’ uniforms. To delve deeper into this partnership, Game Rant conducted an interview with Marie-Philip Poulin, a renowned ice hockey player and captain of Montreal Victoire team in the PWHL. For your convenience, this interview has been condensed for conciseness and clarity.
Hockey Star Marie-Philip Poulin Talks Bringing Better Representation To NHL 25
Q: PWHL was established back in 2023. Can you tell us when this collaboration was conceived?
Poulin: Essentially, we began playing NHL 25, the video game, a couple of months ago with the PWHL, which was truly remarkable. Previously, with the IIHF, we managed to join the game a few years back, but for the PWHL, being included in the game so soon after our new league’s formation—only a year in—speaks volumes about their leadership and EA Sports as a whole. Having us featured in that game is nothing short of astounding.
Without a doubt, we strongly support the idea that “visibility fosters aspiration.” This isn’t just for young boys but also for young girls who might be interested in trying out that game. If they observe their sibling playing ice hockey, they can pick up NHL 25 and witness us in action. I find it truly inspiring to notice this.
Have you observed the introduction of women’s IIHF teams in NHL 22, followed by more diversity advancements within the game since then? Has the inclusion of PWHL in NHL 25 marked a substantial growth in your connection with the video game franchise?
Poulin: Being included in the NHL 25 speaks volumes about their values. We’ve been discussing women’s sports, and having that backing is important. What EA Sports and NHL 25 stand for is exactly this—supporting and believing in what we do. As you pointed out, since 2021 with the IIHF, we made our way in. But now, being part of NHL 25—that this league represents us as a women’s professional hockey league—I believe it shows that representation matters, and our inclusion is significant. This, I think, is a testament to EA Sports’ ethos and what a privilege it is to be part of NHL 25.
Q: Do you think those advancements in diversity in gaming have had a notable impact on the sport?
Poulin: I believe having the backing of such an intelligent and well-respected company and organization is quite significant for us. In our inaugural year as PWHL, having their support already in the second year will undoubtedly help us expand rapidly. Our aim is to foster women’s hockey not just as a sport but also within games. Being aware that we inspire young girls and are part of this movement, I think it makes a lasting impact.
Bringing PWHL To NHL 25
Q: How involved were you with the collaboration between PWHL and the developers of NHL 25?
Poulin: It seems like numerous meetings may have taken place without our knowledge, leading to our inclusion in this game. We’ve been included in the scanning process, where we scan our heads, and it feels like a great deal of effort has gone into ensuring our participation. For us, being part of this game is just one small piece of a larger puzzle, but it’s important to appreciate and acknowledge the effort that’s been invested in making this happen. I hope this becomes standard practice, and I believe it will help people understand that not only boys play hockey, but girls can aspire to be a part of it too. It’s truly inspiring to witness.
A: In general terms, what does the procedure entail when your image is used in a video game franchise such as Electronic Arts’ NHL?
Poulin: Indeed, I alluded to the scanning process being a part of it, but there’s much more to it. Our dedicated individuals ensured that every aspect catered to each player individually. There are numerous considerations involved, but what truly excites us is the realization that the PWHL has now become a part of our game. Simply put, the opportunity to bear our names, our faces, and the chance to select one of us for your team is an incredible feeling.
Is experiencing your work within a virtual environment alter your perspective on it? Do you gain any fresh understanding about how others perceive the game from this vantage point?
Poulin: We aim to continuously improve and move forward in this league, and having EA Sports on board since the launch of NHL 25 speaks volumes about our progress. Our goal is to enhance our performance, increase visibility, and attract more fans. Though it’s never flawless after the first year, I believe EA Sports and NHL 25 significantly contribute to our efforts—especially in this regard. Being part of such an incredible project is truly remarkable.
