As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of cheaters and hackers in various games. The recent influx of cheaters in Black Ops 6 has been particularly frustrating, especially during competitive matches. It seems Activision is finally taking steps to address the issue with their RICOCHET anti-cheat system, but I’m still skeptical.
Following the launch of Ranked Play in Black Ops 6, there was an excessive number of cheaters, which led Activision to address the problem openly. Now, developers have disclosed a set of modifications to the RICOCHET anti-cheat system, but player responses have been quite diverse on this matter.
In recent times, hackers have been a recurring problem in competitive Call of Duty games, but the hacking issues during Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 1 have been especially aggravating. Cheaters employ various illicit tools such as wall hacks and aimbot to dominate game lobbies. Not only regular players, but even professional CoD League competitors have vocalized their discontent over this issue, leading Team RICOCHET to make adjustments as early as November.
Activision has recently apologized, acknowledging that they fell short in implementing RICOCHET Anti-Cheat during the release of Season 1, specifically with regards to its integration into Ranked Play.

Additionally, they revealed plans for a core-level software (kernel-level driver) and innovative security measures on the server side for RICOCHET, which are scheduled to debut in Seasons 2 and 3. Further modifications to the anti-cheat system will also be implemented.
- Upgrades & Accounts: Account bans are now happening hourly due to increased velocity from several RICOCHET Anti-Cheat systems, this in addition to the over 19,000 accounts removed recently. These updates to our systems mean enforcement response times are now quicker than they have ever been.
- Leaderboards: The cleanup process has been updated for faster synchronization of leaderboard changes.
- Investigations: We have significantly expanded our Replay Investigation render farm – the machines used to generate clips for examination. We’ve also ramped up the group dedicated to manually review clips (based on a priority order that favors detections). In the last several weeks, the Replay tool updates have been highly effective at validating detections and reports, providing further training for AI systems for the anti-cheat team, and removing cheaters.
From all aspects, it seems like Activision’s response is optimistic, and they are truly making an effort to boost RICOCHET’s performance. The fact that they will introduce a kernel-level driver stands out as particularly hopeful, since this should enable developers to spot malware and hacks right on the computers where these applications run directly.
Users remain skeptical about RICOCHET’s performance, with some expressing doubts about its fundamental efficiency. One user put it this way: “A leopard doesn’t change its spots. I won’t be fooled twice, thrice, or four times by their claims about the anti-cheat system. After being deceived five times, I no longer trust anything they say on the matter.
Another stated, “Ricochet anti-cheat ‘team’. You cannot convince me there is an actual team working on this. I wonder if anyone on this ‘team’ would ever dare put that on a resume.”
One user even called out the upcoming kernel-level driver updates, “They aren’t adding a kernel-level driver because they already have one, and clearly the one that already exists is pure shit. I have serious doubts they’ll be able to come up with a big enough update for Ricochet in the next ~2 months before Season 3 when they have so far failed to come up with anything good over the past however many years Ricochet has been out.”
Many gamers, often referred to as ‘shadow ban’ critics, argued for reforms within this system, stating they were unjustly grouped with suspected cheaters in game lobbies. Since its launch in 2021, RICOCHET has been a point of contention among players, and it will be intriguing to observe if the recent updates can restore its positive image within the gaming community.
