Best Item Cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket

As a seasoned Trainer with over two decades of Pokémon battles under my belt, I can confidently say that these items are absolute game-changers in the world of Pokémon TCG Pocket. From the universal healing power of the humble Potion to the strategic retreating assistance provided by X-Speed, each one offers a unique advantage that can tip the scales in favor of even the most novice Trainers.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket focuses on battles featuring Pokémon, yet it provides players with the opportunity to utilize potent Item cards for various purposes such as healing teammates, gaining insight into the opponent’s hand, or summoning Fossil creatures onto the battlefield.

No Thanks, Keep Reading

In contrast to Supporter cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, which can only be used once per turn, Item cards don’t have any restrictions on their usage. A player is allowed to use a single Supporter card each turn, but they can play as many Item cards as they have in their hand during that same turn.

From a passionate Trainer like me, here’s a pro tip for building your Pokémon TCG:Pocket decks – be mindful of the strict deck size restriction. To make the most of each card slot, these are some top-tier Items that can give you an edge in the game:

9. Old Amber

A Real Dinosaur

Card Effect Set
Play this card as if it were a 40-HP Basic Colorless Pokemon. At any time during your turn, you may discard this card from play. This card can’t retreat. Genetic Apex

In the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, all three Fossil Item cards serve the same purpose when used. However, they differ in terms of which Pokemon they cause to evolve. For instance, Old Amber specifically triggers the evolution of Aerodactyl.

The problem with Aerodactyl is that it only has one attack: Primal Wingbeat, which deals no damage and requires a Heads to shuffle the opponent’s Active Pokemon back into their deck.

As a passionate Pokémon trainer, I’ve noticed an important aspect that might not be immediately clear: instead of removing enemy Pokémon from the field, we should focus on knocking them out (KO). When you defeat an opponent’s Pokémon in this way, they lose Energy and, more importantly, you don’t gain any Points.

Given that information, it’s clear that Old Amber won’t remain ineffective forever. The upcoming Aerodactly ex card for the Mythical Island set appears incredibly potent, suggesting that this Item could climb to the top of the list in the future.

8. Dome Fossil

The Ancient Vampire Summoner

Card Effect Set
Play this card as if it were a 40-HP Basic Colorless Pokemon. At any time during your turn, you may discard this card from play. This card can’t retreat. Genetic Apex

To engage in the game of Kabuto and its evolved form, Kabutops (a peculiar Pokemon), you’ll need the Dome Fossil. This Pokemon specializes in Leech Life, a unique ability that inflicts 50 base damage while simultaneously healing itself for an equal amount, all powered by one Fighting Energy.

If Kabutops started as a Stage 1 Pokémon, it would make a more effective choice in battles, however, it can be quite tricky to deploy it due to the necessary preparations, despite needing just one Energy Card to activate it initially.

While Kabutops surpasses Aerodactyl, it fails to match up to the divine entity that captivated the hearts of Twitch Plays Pokemon enthusiasts globally in past times.

7. Helix Fossil

The Prophet Stone

Card Effect Set
Play this card as if it were a 40-HP Basic Colorless Pokemon. At any time during your turn, you may discard this card from play. This card can’t retreat. Genetic Apex

The Helix Fossil, hallowed be thy name, from the days of Twitch Plays Pokemon, is needed to play Omanyte, and its evolution, Omastar. While a pain to get on the field, Omastar’s attack makes it worthwhile.

Omastar’s Ancient Vortex is a three-energy move (requiring one Water energy), dealing 70 damage. However, the primary effect of this attack prevents the active Pokémon it hits from launching an attack in their following turn.

In a matchup where the opponent’s strategy centers around a few key powerhouses, the ancient trap known as Whirlpool could prove catastrophic. By disrupting their counterplay capabilities, it effectively neutralizes these heavy hitters. However, opting for a tactical retreat and allowing another Pokemon to attack might circumvent Whirlpool, at the cost of significant Energy expenditure.

As a gamer, I’ve found that decks featuring Omastar, especially when backed by Misty, can be quite cunning to overcome. However, setting it up correctly and ensuring you have enough Energy can be quite challenging. Compared to the dependable Starmie ex deck, it’s a riskier play due to its complexity and potential for missteps.

6. Pokedex

A Pointless Scanner

Card Effect Set
Look at the top 3 cards of your deck. Promo-A

The Pokedex card was a gnat’s wing away from greatness. On its own, it lets the player see the next three cards they’re going to draw, and that’s an underwhelming effect in a game with such small deck sizes.

If given the ability to reorganize or add entries at will, the Pokedex could rank among the most valuable items in the game for every player to utilize. However, due to its current limitations and the relatively low practicality of the information it offers, it falls short when compared to similar items in its category.

If a Red Card Item is played, it causes the player to rearrange their deck, making it so that the Pokedex might not be necessary the very next turn, as long as the opposing player lays down another such item on the field.

5. Red Card

Needs More Yellow Cards

Card Effect Set
Your opponent shuffles their hand into their deck and draws 3 cards. Promo-A

The Red Card functions peculiarily, as it could unintentionally aid the opposing side when misused, since it retrieves a predetermined number of cards.

Playing a Red Card forces your opponent to get rid of all their current cards and then draw three new ones. It appears straightforward, yet its usefulness might not be as apparent as it seems.

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, it’s unlikely that hands will grow overly large because the game board is compact in size. This means that when players draw cards, they usually play them promptly.

At minimum, a Red Card can momentarily prevent an adversary from employing a potent Supporter they’ve drawn, such as Sabrina. However, using it is dependent on specific situations, and players may keep it for extended periods, hoping it will prove beneficial in the future.

4. Poke Ball

Gotta Catch At Least One Basic

Card Effect Set
Put 1 random Basic Pokemon from your deck into your hand. Promo-A

The Poke Ball is an excellent starting card since it adds another Pokemon to your playing field, aiding in the setup for the remainder of the fight and making it easier to proceed with the game.

As a devoted Pokémon TCG enthusiast, I must admit there’s one aspect about Poke Balls that I find somewhat limiting: they’re primarily designed for Basic Pokémon. This restriction makes them less effective in decks that heavily rely on evolutions, as they can’t fetch the specific cards players need.

It’s worth noting that certain top-tier Pokemon in the game are Basic types, like Pikachu ex and Mewtwo ex. The Poke Ball can assist players in swiftly summoning these giants, allowing them to unleash bursts of Energy more efficiently.

3. Potion

Card Effect Set
Heal 20 damage from 1 of your Pokemon. Promo-A

In the world of Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCGO), some of the most versatile Item cards are those that can seamlessly integrate into various decks and offer utility across multiple scenarios. Take the example of Potion – its ability to heal makes it a universally useful card, regardless of the specific deck you’re using.

The potion eliminates 20 tokens indicating damage from a Pokemon. Although this might appear insignificant, it could be a lifesaver for the player if their basic Pokemon is on the verge of being heavily attacked before it can evolve, or if an opponent’s attack has just enough strength to defeat it.

In addition to active Pokemon, potions can be applied to those resting on the bench. As in the main series games, it’s strategic to replace an injured Pokemon with a healthy one that’s been sidelined, allowing the injured one time to recover.

In terms of the card “Potions”, it’s not going to significantly enhance grass-themed single player decks because they already have Erika. However, it’s important to note that Erika can only be used once per turn, so having a few Potions in these decks is still advantageous.

2. X-Speed

Anime Teleport Away

Card Effect Set
During this turn, the Retreat Cost of your Active Pokemon is 1 less. Promo-A

Just as I learned in my Pokemon adventures, sometimes it’s smart to retreat, even if it means giving up a turn or spending some Energy. In the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, though, not all Pokemon can just take off for free – they often have to pay an Energy cost before scurrying back to the Bench.

Introduce the X-Speed Artifact, lowering the Energy Recall Charge by one unit. This item proves beneficial in most decks due to its ability to move an injured Active Pokemon to the bench, thereby denying your opponent valuable points they require to emerge victorious.

Not all decks use this, like the scumbag Starmie Ex, which has zero Retreat Cost. The non-jerk starfish Pokemon can make good use of the X-Speed Item card, and players should consider using it.

1. Hand Scope

Reading Minds & Hands

Card Effect Set
Your opponent reveals their hand. Promo-A

Anticipating your own future card draws might not offer much advantage, but grasping your opponent’s upcoming moves could prove incredibly beneficial.

Some Kanto Gym Leader Supporter cards have the ability to significantly catch an unaware player off guard. For instance, Sabrina’s card grants switching abilities, Erika’s benefits grass-type decks with healing properties, while Blaine, Lt. Surge, and Giovanni all boost damage output in their respective ways.

An adversary using an evolution-themed deck will require specific cards in their hand to bring out their strongest Pokemon. Additionally, there might be Items they are preparing for their upcoming turn.

A Hand Scanner provides insight into an opponent’s cards, allowing you to strategize effectively based on the information disclosed about their upcoming moves.
