As a long-time devotee of the Mortal Kombat franchise, I must admit that I was initially intrigued by the idea of Invasions mode when it was introduced with Mortal Kombat 1. However, the recent rerun of Season 1’s Spectre theme has left me scratching my head and feeling a bit disheartened.
The current season of Invasions in Mortal Kombat 1 might signal potential changes or even the future of this unique game mode. Since its launch, Invasions has served as a quasi-story mode, offering distinctive mechanics that differ from the rest of the game. As we move into Invasions’ ninth season, a recent developer decision could spark debate among players. On one side, it may just be a nostalgic trip for fans. Yet, there’s also speculation that this move could hint at more concerning developments for Mortal Kombat 1.
In Mortal Kombat 1, the “Invasions Mode” is a fresh addition to the series, offering a single-player experience. Each season within Invasions focuses on a specific character who serves as that season’s final boss. Players can choose any fighters they prefer and traverse a map, battling fights and mini-games to reach each zone’s climactic battle. Rewards in each season of Invasions include exclusive cosmetics inspired by the spotlight character, which players can earn or purchase with in-game currency from the seasonal store. Essentially, Invasions replaced Mortal Kombat’s Krypt, but it approaches things differently. The possibility of a rerun might be concerning to some players.
Mortal Kombat 1’s First Season Rerun Raises Some Concerning Questions
Mortal Kombat 1 Just Repeated its First Invasions Season
In an unexpected twist, Season 9 of Mortal Kombat 1‘s Invasions mirrors the initial season, titled “The Spectre”. It’s not a verbatim replay, as some interactions have been altered since the original run. However, Scorpion maintains his role as the primary antagonist, with the same narrative as the first season. This is evident in the available rewards, many of which are remnants from the initial run. To be fair, this provides players a second opportunity to acquire cosmetics they missed previously. Yet, it leaves room for speculation about what future seasons of Invasions might entail.
Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasions Still Have Room to Grow
There’s a strong chance that upcoming Mortal Kombat seasons might resemble previous ones, which wouldn’t do justice to the numerous unexploited Invasion themes. Characters such as Johnny Cage and Kitana haven’t had their own seasons yet, and there are plenty of intriguing ideas for new themes that could go untapped if this happens. However, the number of seasons might be limited by the roster of playable fighters in the game, leaving out guest characters. Yet, there’s still a wealth of potential for future Mortal Kombat seasons to explore. It would be unfortunate if all the remaining Invasion content in Mortal Kombat 1 were just rehashes of old material.
Mortal Kombat’s Invasion Rerun is Worrying Combined With Recent Rumors
The Resurgence of the Spectre’s Return unfortunately coincided with a tense period for Mortal Kombat 1. With whispers of potential DLC cancellations swirling, anxiety about the game’s future is running high. Adding to these concerns is the fact that the first rerun of Invasions seasons is also happening at the same time. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily mean that the original Invasions seasons have concluded. Unfortunately, the timing of this season’s launch couldn’t have been more unfavorable. Here’s hoping that these events are merely coincidental and Mortal Kombat 1 will soon announce new seasons of Invasions.
It would be a shame if Mortal Kombat 1 ‘s remaining Invasions were all reruns of past content.
Re-running seasons offers a chance for those who initially missed out to catch up, but it’s hoped that there’s more than just re-runs ahead. Although future editions of Mortal Kombat may not include Invasions, they were integral to the character of Mortal Kombat 1. There remains great potential for various themes in future seasons. It would be a letdown if the eight seasons that have been released are all the players will ever get to experience.
