Disney Cruises Past $2 Billion At The Box Office In 2024

As a gamer who grew up with Disney and Marvel movies being a staple in my childhood, I can confidently say that Disney has been consistently dominating the box office scene for years now. Having witnessed their rise from the success of classics like The Lion King and Aladdin to the modern-day juggernauts like Avengers: Endgame and Frozen II, it’s no surprise to see them standing head and shoulders above their competition.

Without a doubt, if there were any doubts, Disney remains undisputed ruler of the box office. By the end of 2024, it’s only Disney who has managed to surpass the $2 billion mark in the U.S. box office.

It’s no wonder that Disney has dominated the box office this year. With numerous high-profile blockbusters launched, each one surpassing expectations. From Deadpool and Wolverine to Moana 2, Mickey Mouse hasn’t had a flop in the lineup this season. However, what factors contributed to Disney towering so significantly above its rivals?

Major Blockbusters Led The Way

In 2023, Disney experienced a stumble at the domestic box office as their major releases – The Haunted Mansion, Wish, and The Marvels – all fell short of expectations, each failing to gross over $100 million in cinemas. To regain momentum heading into 2024, Disney needed a significant comeback, and they achieved it. Some notable domestic successes for the company in 2024 include:

  • Inside Out 2 – $652.9 million
  • Moana 2 – $342 million
  • Deadpool and Wolverine – $636.7 million
  • Alien: Romulus – $105 million
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – $171 million

The five movies accumulated a total of $1.9 billion in earnings, effortlessly propelling Disney beyond the $2 billion mark. However, their success story isn’t concluding just yet! This coming Friday will see the release of The Lion King: Mufasa, with expectations that it could earn approximately $50 million over the weekend.

Disney Also Topped $2 Billion in 2022

Could it be possible that Disney possesses an annual magic touch? Despite a seemingly ordinary 2023, Mickey Mouse and his companions shone brightly in 2022, raking in over $2 billion that year. Marvel spearheaded this success, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever being one of the highest-grossing films of the year, earning $438 million. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness followed closely behind with a gross of $411 million. Remarkably, even with negative reviews, Thor: Love and Thunder managed to pull in an impressive $343 million.

Overall, Disney has topped $2 billion seven times since 2010. Will they make it eight in 2025?
