As a die-hard fan of all things Gotham and its caped crusader, I can’t help but feel both elated and frustrated by the latest updates on Matt Reeves‘ The Batman – Part II. Elated because we’re finally going to see the Dark Knight return to our screens in 2025, and frustrated because it seems like we’ll have to wait another year for the script to be ready.
Matt Reeves finally gave the briefest of updates on The Batman – Part II.
Speaking to Zoë Kravitz in an interview for Variety, Reeves said:
Yeah, we’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year.
Filming in 2025 has been known for a few months, but the script’s progress is the new detail.
Why The Delay?
Originally set for an October 2025 release, but alas, I’ve learned that my much-anticipated game, Part II, has been delayed a full year and will now be dropping on October 2, 2026. In the initial announcement, it was rumored that industry strikes in 2023 could have played a part in this shift.
It’s due to the fact that Reeves had to complete the script as the Writers Guild of America strike occurred from May 2023, lasting for a total of 143 days. Consequently, all work was halted during this period.
Moreover, it’s not as if Reeves wasn’t engaged in other projects. He served as an executive producer for the HBO spin-off of The Penguin and the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. Additionally, a Netflix film titled Lift featured Kevin Hart in its cast.
An Update On The Penguin
During the interview, Kravitz asked Reeves about Penguin.
Kravitz: And more of these shows? Everyone’s freaking out over
The Penguin
.Reeves: We’re discussing with Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner, about potentially having another season. That was an exceptional journey. I feel incredibly lucky. The characters aren’t mine; they are part of a larger universe. It boils down to being able to portray them in a way that resonates personally.
Information about “The Batman – Part II” is still shrouded in mystery, yet it’s certain that Colin Farrell will be part of the cast, as he has confirmed his involvement in the film. However, it remains unclear if the Penguin will serve as the main villain in the story.
Clayface Rumors Debunked
A week ago, James Gunn unveiled plans for a Clayface film penned by Mike Flanagan, with Reeves serving as a producer. There were early whispers suggesting that the character might feature in “Batman 2”.
However, someone on the Threads inquired from Gunn, “Is this accurate?” while also posting a screenshot of a rumor suggesting that “Clayface and The Scarecrow could significantly contribute to The Batman Part II.
Gunn made it crystal clear by saying, “First off, that’s not true. Secondly, I’m afraid it can’t be the case because we haven’t written the initial draft of the script yet.
Today, someone inquired whether Clayface belongs to the DC Universe. Gunn confirmed, “Indeed, the film is part of the DC Universe. Didn’t I mention that before?
DCU vs. Elseworlds
In simpler terms, James Gunn’s DC Universe is distinct from Matt Reeves’. The Batman character in Gunn’s universe, who goes by the name Bruce Wayne, has a movie in production titled “The Brave and the Bold“. This film will primarily explore the dynamic between Bruce Wayne and his son Damian. It’s been confirmed that a new actor will be cast for this role, not Robert Pattinson.
Matt Reeves’ version of Batman exists within an alternate universe, as per James Gunn’s classification of Elseworlds – stories featuring DC characters but separate from the main continuity. Last year, someone inquired about why Gunn didn’t include Reeves’ Batman in the DC Universe, and he simply replied that it was Matt’s decision.
How very brooding and mysterious of Matt. That’s why he’s the guy making Batman movies.
