Biggest Losers Of Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War

Summary

  • Shuhei Hisagi’s reputation suffers.
  • Sajin Komamura’s sacrifice doesn’t pay off.
  • Rose fails to shine like his fellow captains.

As a long-time fan of Bleach who has witnessed the growth and development of its characters over the years, I must admit that this final arc was a bit of a letdown when it comes to certain beloved figures. It seems like some characters, despite their rich backstories and potential, didn’t quite live up to expectations in the grand confrontation with the Quincy.

In the intense conflict known as the Thousand Year Blood War within the series Bleach, the stakes have never been more significant. This massive battle between Soul Reapers and Quincy tests each member’s resilience to their utmost capacity. While some characters rose to new heights because of this, others unfortunately fell short and appeared less competent.

In the aftermath of the Thousand Year Blood War in Bleach, several characters faced significant damage to their reputation due to unique circumstances. Let’s delve into what led to their downfall, even though they entered the conflict with high expectations. Here are the individuals who suffered the most, whether they survived or not.

Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

1. Shuhei Hisagi

Hisagi Continues To Be The Punching Bag Of The Soul Reapers Unfortunately

  • First Appearance: Episode 21

In modern storylines, Hisagi is often portrayed as receiving more than his fair share of blows from other characters, earning him a reputation among fans. It’s easy to overlook the fact that during the Fake Karakura Town arc, Hisagi was depicted as a powerful fighter who even unleashed his Bankai. However, in the latest storyline, he seems almost ineffective compared to his earlier portrayal.

Following a harsh battle against Masc De Masculine, Hisagi struggles to keep the Bambis at bay and eventually succumbs to Pepe’s mind control, ultimately losing to Byakuya. It goes without saying that this encounter was not one of Hisagi’s finest moments in the series.

2. Sajin Komamura

Komamura Paid The Ultimate Sacrifice To Achieve So Little

  • First Appearance: Episode 24

Komamura’s humanization method was a breathtaking spectacle, yet the impact of his ultimate sacrifice in the narrative is somewhat minimal. Compared to Bambietta, who was effectively defeating standard Soul Reaper troops with her assaults, she was still just one among many Sternritter invaders. In fact, she was viewed as weaker than several of her peers, such as Gremmy and As Nodt, for instance.

Regardless, Komamura activates his Bankai, even giving up his life to transform into a wolf and summon enough force to obliterate Bambietta. However, it appears that Komamura intended to confront Yhwach in this form, but due to passing out before reaching him, his entire strategy was thwarted.

3. Rose

Rose’s Dazzling Bankai Ultimately Amounts To Nothing

  • First Appearance: Episode 122

Even though Rose manages to hold his own against some Quincy soldiers during the initial attack, he doesn’t last long and is largely absent for most of the storyline that follows. After an astonishing unveiling of his Bankai, Rose unfortunately discloses every intricate detail about the technique to his adversary, a move that proves to be costly.

Following a flurry of blows from Masac, Rose collapses unconsciously. Moreover, he transforms into a zombie that Mayuri successfully revives later. In this storyline, Rose unfortunately fell far short compared to his fellow captains in terms of achievement, but he certainly departed with panache.

4. Bambietta Basterbine

The Leader Of The Bambis Is Taken Out Pretty Quickly And Then Zombified

  • First Appearance: TYBW Episode 6

The Bambis, an eccentric and unsettling gang of Sternritters, significantly contribute to the climax of the story, with the majority of them participating in various conflicts throughout the series. However, Bambietta encounters her demise at the hands of Komomura during their initial confrontation, marking her first significant battle.

Following her death in battle, Giselle transforms her into a zombie, and her new master treats her abominably. Regardless of her role as a leader within this distinctive group, Bambietta doesn’t make much impact on-screen; however, she has gained popularity among fans in the series.

5. BG-9

A Mysterious Sternritter Who Was Utterly Humiliated

  • First Appearance: TYBW Episode 5

Initially, when BG-9 made its debut on screen during the early stages of the storyline, it presented itself as a captivating enigma among the Sternritter, standing out as one of the most intriguing so far. Regrettably, just moments after being unveiled, BG-9 was reduced to nothingness following Soi Fon’s use of Bankai in the series, and later, it suffered humiliation due to its defeat.

In the story, it seems like we only got a sneak peek at BG-9’s full potential, leaving us curious about its true combat abilities. It’s amazing how Tite Kubo has crafted this character, even a seemingly insignificant villain like BG-9 appears so awe-inspiring. However, it’s disappointing that BG-9 didn’t live up to its potential in the end.

6. Genryusai Yamamoto

The Leader Of The Gotei 13 Suffered A Devastating Defeat That Cost Him His Life

  • First Appearance: Episode 24

It’s unfortunate to acknowledge that during the grand finale against the Quincy, Yamamoto, leader of the Gotei 13, didn’t make much of an impact. In reality, his actions were limited to slaying a single Quincy, which depleted his Bankai, followed by being split in half, causing deep sorrow across the Soul Society.

From my perspective, it seems plausible that Yamamoto’s staggering display of power was what compelled Yhwach to retreat. Yet, this singular incident doesn’t necessarily vindicate the relatively limited accomplishments credited to Yamamoto, even with his Bankai activation being one of the most memorable sequences in the series.

7. Chad

Chad Still Can’t Seem To Keep Up With Ichigo And The Others

  • First Appearance: Episode 2

It seems like bad luck always follows Chad. Although Orihime plays a significant role in assisting Ichigo against Yhwach multiple times during the final storyline, Chad’s participation is quite limited compared to his counterpart. He mainly blocks some Quincy arrows aimed at Ichigo and throws a few random punches, but overall, he doesn’t contribute much throughout this arc.

Still, it is nice to see his conversations with Ichigo which do amount to a few heartfelt moments, especially when they discuss the situation with Uryu. Chad himself though, once again, gets dealt a bad hand that makes him look a little weak compared to his friends.

8. Ganju Shiba

Ganju’s Moment To Prove himself Ended Up Somehow Making Him Even More Forgettable

  • First Appearance: Episode 22

As Ganju unexpectedly joined the group on their way to the Soul Palace, it appeared as if he had something to prove. Throughout the Soul Society arc, Ganju was often undermined, but this could be an opportunity for him to demonstrate his talents with his sand-based skills and diverse collection of weapons.

Although Ganju provides a map of the Soul Palace, he doesn’t offer anything else, and Yhwach easily dispels the smokescreen surrounding him. In the anime, Ganju did manage to sink the Schutzstafell using quicksand, but his performance in this arc didn’t seem to improve his standing among fans due to a rather unimpressive portrayal of the character.
