For years, fans have been asking for older Pokemon games to be available on Nintendo Switch and the newer Switch 2. While Nintendo hadn’t added them to its online service, the recent release of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen finally made it happen – something I and many others were hoping for! Interestingly, data discovered after the release suggests that Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald could be coming soon. Now, it looks like Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are likely to be added next.
I’m really enjoying the recent Pokémon games, like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Pokémon Champions, and I’m excited to hear that the Gen 3 games are coming to Switch eventually. But now would be the perfect time to remake Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver for modern consoles. Those games are incredibly popular and have been out for 16 years – it’s time for them to be available on Switch and potentially the next console!
Why Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Are Prime Candidates for Switch Ports
I believe Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver deserve to be ported to the Switch and Switch 2 after Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Here’s why:
- Pokemon FireRed outsold LeafGreen on Switch and Switch 2, and both were constantly in the top three spots of the Best Sellers section within the Nintendo eShop for weeks after their release. Their low pricetag surely helped, but there is no reason not to do the same with other games.
- Recent leaks suggest that all Pokemon games in production right now are new releases, with no remakes. Among them is a new Pokemon Legends game set in Galar, if leaks are to be believed. Many fans wanted a new Johto game even before Pokemon Legends: Z-A came out, let alone now.
- There were theories that Pokemon Johto remakes would release sometime in Gen 9’s era, but this never happened. As of now, the latest Johto games in the series are Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which came out all the way back in 2010.

If Nintendo doesn’t remake the first generation of Pokémon games and the next Pokémon Legends title takes place in Galar, fans might have to wait another five years or more to revisit the Johto region. Bringing Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver to the Switch and the next Nintendo console could be a great solution, letting players experience Johto again and adding even more Pokémon games to modern Nintendo systems, making it easier to catch ’em all.
Releasing updated versions of older Pokémon games would be beneficial for The Pokémon Company, especially given how well Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen sold. Plus, bringing back Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver on the Switch would be a major win. With leaks suggesting Pokémon Winds and Waves won’t arrive until late 2027, fans might be waiting a long time for a new main series game.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Could Be Good for Gen 10 Plans
Releasing Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver would be a great move for both The Pokémon Company and its fans. Personally, I’d prefer completely new games, even if they take longer to develop, as long as older favorites like these are made available in the meantime. I believe this approach would be better for everyone involved in the long run.
The Pokémon Company might be wise to hold off on releasing updated versions of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver if the rumored online multiplayer Pokémon game is coming soon. This new game, reportedly set in the Johto region, could generate a lot of excitement when it’s announced. However, since the game is still early in development, it likely won’t be released for many years – potentially after 2030. In that case, releasing HeartGold and SoulSilver now could build anticipation while fans wait.
