Shockingly Few Players Have Beaten Oblivion Remaster’s Main Story

It’s been over a year since Bethesda unexpectedly released an updated version of their classic 2006 role-playing game, Oblivion. While the release was very popular, data shows that most players who bought the updated version never completed the game’s main story.

Bethesda RPGs are known for their compelling questlines, and the ones in the original Oblivion are among the best the studio has ever created. Each questline, like those for the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild, encourages players to experience the game in unique ways. Many players don’t finish the game until they’ve completed every questline in Oblivion Remastered. Interestingly, after more than a year since its release, a significant number of players seem to be choosing to skip the main story.

How Many Players Have Beaten Oblivion Remastered?

According to TheGamer, data from the Oblivion Remastered achievements reveals what players enjoyed and what they skipped. Surprisingly, only 7.9% of Steam players have completed the main story and earned the “Champion of Cyrodiil” achievement. While completion rates are better on Xbox (13%) and PlayStation (14.9%), this is still a small percentage. The difference is likely due to PC mods disabling achievements, but even with the highest console completion rate, less than 15% of players finished the main quest.

Compared to other guild questlines, some are far more popular across all platforms. According to TheGamer, the Arena questline is completed the most, followed by the Dark Brotherhood. This isn’t surprising, as the Arena is focused on combat and relatively easy to finish, and the Dark Brotherhood questline is a fan favorite with a strong reputation.

It’s still surprising how many players have stopped playing the main story, but there are a few likely reasons. One is the game’s difficulty, especially for players who leveled up before starting the main quest. Completing the initial quest in Kvatch at a high level could throw an overwhelming number of enemies at you, making it feel impossible to win. Another issue was performance. Oblivion Remastered was known for getting slower and more buggy the longer you played. If players focused on other parts of the game first and then started experiencing performance problems, it’s understandable why some might have quit before finishing the main story.

The final update for Oblivion Remastered came out in July 2025, and many players now think Bethesda and Virtuos have stopped supporting the game. It’s not clear why the game hasn’t received more updates after launch, considering how popular it is. The surprise release strategy clearly worked well for Bethesda, and it remains to be seen if they’ll use it again in the future.
