As a long-time comic book enthusiast and someone who has grown up with the DC universe, I am absolutely thrilled by the plethora of iconic characters that are set to grace our screens in James Gunn’s upcoming film. The sheer number of heroes and villains that have been teased is nothing short of breathtaking, and it seems as though Gunn has truly gone all-in on delivering a cinematic experience that will do justice to these beloved characters.

James Gunn has shared a sneak peek at his vision for DC with fans, unveiling a teaser trailer for his upcoming film, Superman. The initial glimpse of David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman was met with positive reactions, but the 2.5-minute trailer also hinted at a variety of other significant DC characters, both heroic and villainous.

Krypto the Superdog

In the upcoming Superman tale directed by James Gunn, the real scene stealer from the Superman teaser trailer, Krypto the Superdog, will transition to live-action for the first time. Showcasing his extraordinary canine abilities of super hearing and speed, Krypto saves a wounded Kal El in this storyline. Previously, James Gunn revealed that his motivation for introducing Krypto into his live-action DC universe stemmed from his own dog Ozu, whom he adopted while writing the Superman script.

Krypto is a survivor from the destruction of Krypton who ended up on Earth, making his debut in DC comics as early as 1955, specifically in Adventure Comics #210. Much like Superman’s faithful canine companion, Krypto possesses powers comparable to his, such as super speed, strength, endurance, and flight. Krypto has made live-action appearances on television, notably in Smallville (CW), Superman & Lois, and the HBO Max series Titans.

Guy Gardner

In the eagerly awaited introduction within the Gunnverse, Nathan Fillion steps into the role of Guy Gardner, Earth’s third Green Lantern. Unlike Superman’s canine companion Krypto, Gardner doesn’t receive extended screen time, but he does make a quick appearance, shooting a burst of green energy before approaching a kneeling Superman. Social media users are already generating memes about this initial live-action portrayal of Guy Gardner, particularly his iconic bowl haircut, which accurately mirrors the character’s comic book appearance.

In 1968, Guy Gardner made his debut in the 59th issue of the Green Lantern comic book series. During the 1980s, he gained prominence as a tough guy and occasionally impulsive member of the Green Lantern corps. Initially planned to appear in the 2011 Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds, his role was eventually cut, but he’s since been featured in numerous animated movies and TV shows from DC.

Lex Luthor

Without a doubt, Superman’s most formidable adversary is Lex Luthor, who makes an appearance in Gunn’s teaser trailer. Viewers get a glimpse of the character, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. Luthor briefly appears in the trailer, first from atop his towering corporate building, Luthocorp, as Superman soars past. Secondly, he is seen wielding what seems to be an extravagant pistol-like weapon, and lastly, he looks defeated, with wounds and scratches marring his face.

Unlike characters like Krypto and Guy Gardner, fans of DC Comics have seen multiple live-action portrayals of Lex Luthor. The latest big-screen adaptation was by Jesse Eisenberg in the Snyderverse, but Michael Cudlitz recently played Lex in Superman & Lois on television. Throughout all his appearances, Lex Luthor has consistently shown himself to be a powerful enemy for Superman, motivated by his fear of the alien’s extraordinary abilities and the potential harm they could inflict upon humans.

Hawkgirl

Another iconic DC character in the Superman teaser trailer is Kendra Saunders, A.K.A Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced. Hawkgirl, much like Guy Gardner, gets her moment in the trailer, with a shot of her swooping down from the heavens in full costume, mace and all. In an earlier interview, Merced hyped up her wardrobe for the upcoming film with fans finally getting their first look thanks to the teaser.

Hawkgirl initially made her authentic debut in Flash Comics #1 from 1940, embodying the eternal soul of Egyptian princess Chay-Ara. Following three different reincarnations into contemporary times, the latest live-action portrayal of Kendra Saunders as Hawkgirl was seen on the CW’s Arrowverse by fans, played by Ciara Renee. A significant plot for Hawkgirl centers around her immortality being linked to a romantic connection with Hawkman, implying that both characters might feature in James Gunn’s upcoming DC universe.

Mr. Terrific

From the latest sneak peek, we see Michael Holt, also known as Mr. Terrific, joining Superman’s team. Played by Edi Gathegi, this super-intelligent inventor is shown multiple times, and there’s an exciting scene where Holt uses a holographic projection to shield a field of gunfire with his T-suit.

Michael Holt, better known as Mr. Terrific, first emerged in Spectre Volume 3 back in 1997 and has since graced various DC animated productions, from films to TV shows and video games. A genius inventor, he’s renowned for his T-Spheres – devices capable of generating holographic shields on demand, emitting energy blasts, and boasting advanced hacking capabilities. His life has been marked by sorrow due to the loss of his wife and unborn child, a grief he carries as self-inflicted guilt. Here’s hoping that Gathegi will breathe life into this character’s portrayal of those deep emotional wounds.

Metamorpho

In the fast-paced teaser trailer, you might accidentally miss it if your eyes blink, but director James Gunn does indeed introduce Rex Mason, better known as Metamorpho or The Element Man, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan. For a fleeting moment, Metamorpho makes an appearance with his characteristic blue eyes and black pupils. Metamorpho is a less popular character in the DC universe, having been unwillingly transformed into The Element Man, losing all his flesh, bones, and blood. It’s exciting to see how Gunn plans to use Metamorpho in this movie, especially since another frame hints at Stagg Enterprises, the company responsible for turning Rex Mason into The Element Man.
