As a long-time Assassin‘s Creed fan with over a decade of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for Shadows is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. After years of waiting for a Japan-set title, the reveal left me feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension due to the high bar set by Ghost of Tsushima.
Next year, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set for release, but its unveiling this year by Ubisoft has sparked a split among the gaming community. Ever since its announcement, opinions on the game have been polarized, leaving many unsure about how to feel towards it. The release date was originally scheduled for October 2024, but Ubisoft has pushed it back significantly.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ubisoft’s Jonathan Dumont took a deep dive into Naoe, one of the game’s lead characters who fights alongside Yasuke, the first assassin in the series based on someone who actually existed.
Super Speedy
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creative lead behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Jonathan Dumont, detailed the perks of Naoe, a swift and agile character modeled after traditional Japanese ninjas.
Naoe is the swiftest Assassin we’ve ever crafted. She boasts extraordinary speed, and her arsenal of gadgets ensures stealth, minimizing the need for frequent combat. Our aim was to cater to those craving the immersive ninja-Assassin gameplay experience.
Fans of Assassin’s Creed have longed for a game set in Japan for years, but when it was finally unveiled, many were left unsatisfied. Given that Ghost of Tsushima had already established a high standard, some wonder if Ubisoft’s traditional approach can meet this benchmark.
The proof will be in the pudding, though.
2023 saw Ubisoft unveiling Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which garnered positive responses from fans due to its compact design that harkened back to a more traditional Assassin’s Creed experience. Conversely, in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we revert to the expansive open-world RPG structure.
In Shadows, Naoe’s narrative primarily revolves around personal growth and improving herself and those around her. Dumont discussed this theme during his conversation with Entertainment Weekly.
She embarks on a journey, partly driven by revenge or honoring a pledged commitment to her family. Along the way, she encounters a world in distress, which strengthens her appreciation for the communal principles her father instilled. Can she create a more benevolent society?
We’ll delve deeper into the significance behind the father bestowing The Hidden Blade upon her.
She does feel like a panther looking at her prey.
