As a seasoned Dungeon Master with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the synergy between certain races and classes in D&D 5e is simply unparalleled. And among all these harmonious combinations, none strike me as more fitting than Tieflings wielding the arcane powers of a Warlock.
In the 2024 edition of Dungeons & Dragons, the Player’s Handbook has been thoroughly updated, redesigning all the current classes and modifying most of the species. However, certain classes work more harmoniously with specific species compared to others.
In the latest version of D&D 5E, a significant change was made to ensure that any combination of classes and species could be effectively used.
The occurrence took place after racial stat bonuses were removed in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and these changes have since been made anew in the updated Player’s Handbook, where they are now associated with Backgrounds instead.
It’s worth noting that in Dungeons & Dragons, there are no inherently ‘bad’ class and species combinations! Players should always choose what they enjoy most. However, certain classes may reap greater benefits depending on the origin choices made by the player.
10. Aasimar – Paladin
Angel Of Destruction
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage | 1 |
Darkvision 60ft | 1 |
Heal 1d4 x Proficiency bonus with Healing Hands | 1 |
Light Cantrip | 1 |
Grow Wings, Create Burning Radiant Light, or Make Necrotic Shroud that scares enemies | 3 |
It’s quite suitable that the beings with angelic-tinted blood assume the role of a sacred knight, since Aasimar excel in the role of Paladins.
As a lover of all things fantasy, I must say that the enhanced resistance to Necrotic damage is an incredible advantage for characters who are naturally adept at battling the undead and malevolent spellcasters. Additionally, the Darkvision is always a valuable asset for adventurers delving into dungeons, providing them with a clearer path in the dark.
The Aasimar’s Healing Hands complements the Paladin’s Lay on Hands ability wonderfully, providing them with an abundance of healing options, making the Paladin an effective substitute when the Cleric is injured or unable to act.
At Level 3, the Celestial Revelation choices prove advantageous for the Paladin, particularly the one granting flight speed. Flight offers an excellent means of movement when navigating tricky circumstances.
9. Dragonborn – Sorcerer
Magic From The Bloodline
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Pick element from Draconic Ancestry | 1 |
Use Breath Weapon attack with element from Draconic Ancestry | 1 |
Resist damage from Draconic Ancestry element | 1 |
Darkvision 60ft | 1 |
Draconic Flight temporarily gives wings | 5 |
It’s quite appropriate that the beings with strong links to dragons are the ones who can harness their power on the battlefield, making Dragonborn ideal candidates for Sorcery.
Apart from having an additional attack method when their spell count is limited due to their Breath Weapon, they also possess the ability to fly, even if it’s only for a short duration, thanks to their wings.
Characters with the Dragonborn race, in addition, receive an elemental damage resistance. Choosing the Sorcerer class and the Draconic Ancestry subclass provides players with a secondary resistance, enabling them to lessen damage from numerous frequent hazards, particularly those often encountered within dungeons.
8. Dwarf – Fighter
Gimli Some Action
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Darkvision 120ft | 1 |
Resist Poison and have Advantage on Poisoned checks | 1 |
Extra Hit Point per level | 1 |
Gain Tremorsense for 10 minutes | 1 |
In the realm of fantasy literature, dwarven warriors are a common element, and this practice persists in Dungeons & Dragons. Typically, a standard Dwarf character is an excellent choice for a formidable fighter.
Dwarves significantly enhance their dark vision to an astounding 120 feet, receive an additional health point for each level they advance, become resistant to poison, and temporarily acquire the ability to sense vibrations (Tremorsense), making them particularly effective against hidden adversaries.
As a gritty Dwarven Fighter, I’ve got an edge over the Barbarians, thanks to those extra hit points that let me stay in the fight longer. Plus, my armor’s top-notch, giving me more protection than most. Add to that the ability to wield Weapon Mastery techniques like a pro, and self-heal with Second Wind when I need to, and it’s clear I’ve got the upper hand in our battles.
To put it simply, despite receiving a balance adjustment, the Fighter’s Action Surge remains one of the most effective abilities within the game. This feature is particularly beneficial for Dwarven characters, who can fully leverage it without compromising on the physical prowess typically associated with Barbarians.
7. Elf – Druid, Wizard, & Rogue
Going Feywild
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Darkvision 60ft | 1 |
Advantage on Charmed Saving Throws | 1 |
Perception or Survival Skill Proficiency | 1 |
Doesn’t need to sleep due to Trance | 1 |
High Elf – Prestidigation Cantrip and can swap on Long Rest | 1 |
High Elf – Detect Magic & Misty Step | 3 & 5 |
Drow Elf – Darkvision 120 ft and Dancing Lights Cantrip | 1 |
Drow Elf – Faerie Fire & Darkness | 3 & 5 |
Wood Elf – 35ft Speed & Druidcraft Cantrip | 1 |
Wood Elf – Longstrider & Pass Without Trace | 3 & 5 |
In the 2024 Player’s Handbook, you’ll find three distinct varieties of Elf: High Elves with their magical prowess, Wood Elves who reside in forests, and Drow Elves who govern the Underdark. Each type excels in unique spells and abilities that cater to different character classes.
A High Elf not only enjoys the benefits of free uses of both Detect Magic and Misty Step abilities, but they are additionally equipped with the Prestidigitation Cantrip. What’s more, they can swap this cantrip for another one once a day. Interestingly, a Wizard can also perform this swap with one of their own cantrips, which means that a High Elf Wizard will possess an extraordinary range of versatile cantrips at their disposal.
Drow Elves are suited for being magical Rogues. This is thanks to them getting the Faerie Fire spell at level 3, which lights an enemy up in such a way that attacks have Advantage, meaning more Sneak Attacks. Then, at level 5, they get the Darkness spell, which makes it much easier to stealth around.
Wood Elf characters boast a higher walking pace, possess the ability to cast the Druidcraft Incantation, and will acquire the Longstrider and Hide from the Enemy abilities as they advance in levels.
Their enhanced mobility and stealth, coupled with their spellcasting abilities, make them ideal candidates for Druids. Moreover, they excel in the role of a Ranger as well.
6. Gnome – Ranger & Rogue
Big Ambitions For The Forgotten Folk
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Darkvision 60ft | 1 |
Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma Saving Throws | 1 |
Forest Gnome – Minor Illusion Cantrip & Speak With Animals x Proficiency Bonus | 1 |
Rock Gnome – Mending & Prestidigitation Cantrip and Construct creation | 1 |
At first glance, a Gnome’s advantages with mental saving throws make them suitable for any character class. However, the specific lineage they choose ultimately determines the optimal class for them.
The Forest Gnome not only gains the ability to use the Minor Illusion Cantrip, but they can also utilize the Speak With Animals spell multiple times, depending on their proficiency level. This feature makes them an ideal companion for a Ranger, as they don’t need to expend spell slots to converse with the wildlife they encounter during their woodland adventures.
A Rock Gnome possesses a unique trait – it can generate a miniature construct which functions as a conduit for casting the enchanting Prestidigitation spell.
Choosing these noisy robots is beneficial for the Rogue since they provide an instant diversion when attempting to bypass guards. Similarly, the Bard and Ranger could also find value in having a slightly noisy mechanical companion.
5. Goliath – Monk
Punch Your Way Off The Street
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Giant Ancestry – Teleport 30ft as Bonus Action | 1 |
Giant Ancestry – Deal 1d10 Fire Damage on attack | 1 |
Giant Ancestry – Deal 1d6 damage and reduce target Speed by 10ft | 1 |
Giant Ancestry – Try to knock creature Prone | 1 |
Giant Ancestry – Spend Reaction to reduce damage by 1d12 + Constitution modifier | 1 |
Giant Ancestry – Spend Reaction after being hit to deal 1d8 Thunder damage to creature within 60ft | 1 |
Advantage on Grappled checks and one size category larger for carrying capacity | 1 |
Transform into a Large-sized being | 5 |
The Goliath boasts numerous impressive fighting skills, making them a superb option for any class specializing in warfare.
In simpler terms, the character type that gains the most advantage from having a Goliath ally in battle is the Monk. This is because the additional speed in movement and the damaging attacks of the Giant Lineage enable the Monk to swiftly charge towards enemies and deliver powerful blows.
Being a Goliath is advantageous for the Monk, particularly given its physical stature and speed enhancement which aids in close combat. Furthermore, the bonus to grappling checks also adds to this advantage, making it an ideal choice for a Monk who frequently engages in melee combat.
In a more casual and engaging style, we could say: These characters – the Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, and Ranger – make fantastic Goliaths, as they’re arguably the top choices for close-quarters battles within the game.
4. Halfling – Rogue
Being A Shire Stereotype
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Advantage on Saving Throws to avoid or end Frightened condition | 1 |
Reroll 1 on D20 Test | 1 |
Move through space of larger creatures | 1 |
Hide behind larger creatures | 1 |
In line with the thieving nature that Bilbo Baggins, a character from fantasy literature, embodies, a Dungeons & Dragons Halfling is ideally suited for the Rogue class; however, unlike the Drow Elves or Rock Gnomes, Halflings approach their skills and abilities in a unique manner.
Halflings are unique in that they can navigate through spaces occupied by larger creatures, and they can blend into their surroundings when near bigger beings using the Hide action. This trait makes Halflings exceptionally skilled at stealthily maneuvering across the battlefield, a perfect fit for a Rogue’s Cunning Action ability.
In addition, Halflings have the advantage of re-rolling a ‘1’ on a 20-sided dice roll. This ensures they won’t fail when searching for or disarming traps, which are crucial tasks that players strive to perform successfully. The ability to bypass these potential mishaps is a significant asset for the Halfling Rogue.
3. Human – Bard
A Song For Humanity
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Gain Heroic Inspiration on Long Rest | 1 |
Pick one extra Skill Proficiency | 1 |
Pick one extra Origin Feat | 1 |
Humans are exceptionally adaptable among all species due to their inherent Origin Feat advantage and additional skill proficiencies they possess.
The best class for the Human is the Bard. This is due to the double Origin Feat choice allowing them to take Musician (three extra instrument proficiencies and the ability to give Heroic Inspiration) as well as either Skilled or Lucky.
Among the Origins for Bards, Musician stands out as the most exceptional choice due to its benefits for musical performances. However, Skilled offers versatility by granting additional proficiencies, making them a master of many skills. Lastly, Lucky equips them with an edge in survival situations, ensuring they can endure various challenges.
The Magic Initiate Feat is another great choice, as it can give the Bard some much-needed combat spells from the Druid and Wizard list to bolster their arsenal.
2. Orc – Barbarian
For The Horde!
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Dash as Bonus Action x Proficiency Bonus | 1 |
Darkvision 120ft | 1 |
Survive being dropped to zero Hit Points once per Long Rest | 1 |
In the latest version of Dungeons & Dragons, Orcs carry forward their affinity for Barbarians, a tradition that was once shared with Half-Orcs.
Instead of relying on distance when charging into battle, Orcs can swiftly dash forward using Adrenaline Rush, granting them this ability as an additional action.
Most importantly, Relentless Endurance enables them to withstand a knockout blow once during a Long Rest. This skill proves beneficial for all character classes, but it particularly saves the Barbarian from exhausting a Rage use if they’re revived by an ally and then have to re-enter combat.
1. Tiefling – Warlock
Making Deals With Daddy Devils
Species Power | Level |
---|---|
Darkvision 60ft | 1 |
Thaumaturgy Cantrip | 1 |
Abyssal Tiefling – Resist Poison Damage & Poison Spray Cantrip | 1 |
Abyssal Tiefling – Ray of Sickness & Hold Person | 3 & 5 |
Chthonic Tiefling – Resist Necrotic Damage & Chill Touch Cantrip | 1 |
Chthonic Tiefling – False Life & Ray of Enfeeblement | 3 & 5 |
Infernal Tiefling – Resist Fire Damage & Fire Bolt Cantrip | 1 |
Infernal Tiefling – Hellish Rebuke & Darkness | 3 & 5 |
It’s quite appropriate that individuals with Tiefling heritage often excel at being Warlocks in D&D 5th Edition, given their connection to fiendish bloodlines.
For each type of Tiefling, you’ll receive two starting cantrips – one is Thaumaturgy, and the other can be chosen according to your preference. Additionally, at levels 3 and 5, you’ll gain extra spells, and you’ll also have resistance against a specific type of damage.
The magical abilities acquired by the different Tiefling types significantly enhance the restricted repertoire of a Warlock, offering intriguing options such as:
Chthonic Tieflings acquire Chill Touch, False Life, and Ray of Enfeeblement, providing a diverse array of magical abilities. Meanwhile, Infernal Tieflings possess these skills as per the 2014 Tiefling version, including the powerful Hellish Rebuke spell, which is a Warlock’s favorite tool and will make enemies wish they hadn’t approached them.
