As a hardcore Star Wars gamer with countless hours spent navigating the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing about the financial woes that led to the cancellation of The Acolyte. On one hand, I’m disappointed that we won’t get more stories from this intriguing series. But on the other, I find it hard not to chuckle at the thought of Disney spending $231 million on a single season of TV, only for it to fall short in terms of viewership and revenue.
In August, Disney announced the cancelation of The Acolyte. Now they shared the reason why.
In a lengthy, contemplative interview with Vulture, Dana Walden and Alan Bergman – the heads of Disney Entertainment – delved into various topics. These ranged from business strategies, original content for Hulu, FX, and ABC, potential sequels like Moana 2 and The Mandalorian, upcoming projects such as Shōgun, Marvel series, Bluey, adult animation, and several other subjects.
The Costly Ambition of The Acolyte
Midway through the conversation, we get this question from Josef Adalian and answer by Bergman:
On the topic of franchises, let’s discuss Star Wars now. It appears to have faced some rough patches recently compared to Marvel. I’m curious to know why you decided not to renew The Acolyte, and if possible, could you give any insight into how Skeleton Crew is faring or its potential future?
Bergman explained that while they were satisfied with their work on “Acolyte”, it didn’t reach the level required considering its cost structure, making a second season impractical. Instead, they are currently working on “Skeleton Crew” and have noticed some growth in it. The reviews for “Skeleton Crew” have been positive, so they will wait and see how things progress as it moves forward.
Berman mentions the “financial layout” or expenditure, which was approximately $231 million for the production of The Acolyte. This figure was disclosed in tax documents published by That Park Place regarding the show’s creation. It ranks as the second most expensive Star Wars series, with Andor leading the pack at a budget of $250 million.
The budget for the “Rogue One” film was roughly between $200 million and $300 million. This movie grossed over $1 billion at the box office, but it’s a secret science to calculate viewer hours and total viewers. However, given that only three episodes of “The Acolyte” made it into the top 10 ranked by Nielsen, it appears that this show didn’t meet expectations.
More Star Wars Movies And Shows
If you’re curious what else Bergman said about Star Wars:
Bergman: Moving forward, we’ve got some exciting projects on the horizon! First up is Andor season two, which we can hardly wait for. I’ve seen every episode, and it’s simply outstanding. Next, Ahsoka season two, helmed by Dave Filoni. We also have several other series in the works that we’ll decide on when the time comes. As mentioned earlier, they must be exceptional to make it to production. In terms of films, currently we’re releasing The Mandalorian this Memorial Day 2026, and we’re developing more movies. We’ll share details about those as soon as we’re prepared to do so.
