As a veteran Battlefield player, spanning through the years from Battlefield 1942 to the recent Battlefield 2042, I’ve seen the highs and lows of this iconic franchise. The absence of a single-player campaign in Battlefield 2042 was like being served a meal without dessert – it just didn’t feel right!
Over the past ten years, the Battlefield series has had its fair share of victories and setbacks. Although Battlefield has enjoyed several triumphs, the more recent installments have shown a decline in performance for this esteemed first-person shooter series. This downward trend was particularly noticeable in the franchise’s latest release, 2021’s Battlefield 2042. This game adopted a live-service model but, unfortunately, bit off more than it could chew.
A significant point of discussion about the game Battlefield 2042 was its absence of a single-player mode, which marked a significant shift from every other game in the Battlefield series. Given the recent changes at developer DICE, it’s expected that future titles in this franchise will undergo significant modifications and will need to address how they plan to incorporate a single-player campaign. Previously, the Battlefield series has experimented with different styles in its single-player offerings, and now, DICE must determine what direction it wants to take with its next installment.
Battlefield Will Need To Decide How It Wants A Single-Player Campaign to Look
Battlefield Has Had Two Distinct Single-Player Styles
In essence, throughout most of its existence, the single-player campaigns in the Battlefield series were designed as traditional first-person shooter experiences. This meant that players took on the role of a single character, navigating an expansive narrative without frequent shifts to other characters. The developers at DICE opted for this straightforward approach for many years within the Battlefield franchise.
From 2016’s “Battlefield 1” up until 2018’s “Battlefield V”, DICE transformed the single-player campaign by introducing War Stories. In these stories, players took on a variety of roles related to the war at hand, traveling through diverse locations around the world in the process. This added an element of change to the game, allowing players to delve deeper into different aspects of the war and understand more about the soldiers who fought there.
Battlefield Will Have To Decide Between Its Two Campaign Styles
In their work on developing the next installment of the Battlefield series, DICE faces a choice: should they reinstate the traditional single-player campaign style, which has been a hallmark of the franchise in the past, or persist with the War Stories format that has characterized recent releases. Each approach represents a unique gameplay style and design, making it impossible for them to blend the two seamlessly. As such, DICE must commit to one approach and remain consistent with it throughout the development process.
Should the studio opt for a conventional approach in their next project, it might signal a return to the foundational themes reminiscent of series like “Battlefield: Bad Company” duology. If they continue along the War Stories path, the team could concentrate on crafting shorter, character-centric narratives without being concerned about unnecessary elements or extending the campaign unnaturally. Both strategies have their merits and drawbacks; a traditional style might seem repetitive, whereas War Stories may not resonate as deeply when focusing on fictional modern conflicts rather than acknowledging real-world historical events. To rejuvenate the franchise with a cohesive vision, it’s high time for DICE to determine which format is more effective and stay committed to it.
In the process of creating the upcoming Battlefield title by DICE, they’ll have to ponder over whether to revert back to the classic single-player campaign approach that has been a staple for the franchise in the past, or persist with the War Stories format as seen in more recent releases.
