One Piece: Popular Anime You’ve Heard Nami’s Voice In

Summary

  • Akemi Okamura voices Nami in One Piece, but has also portrayed many iconic characters in other anime.
  • Some of the projects she has worked in include: Porco Rosso, Hunter X Hunter, Zatch Bell! and Pokemon.
  • Okamura showcased versatility by playing roles like Paninya in Fullmetal Alchemist and Akemi Hinazuki in Erased.

As a longtime fan and admirer of Akemi Okamura’s impressive vocal range and versatility, I find it truly fascinating to delve into her diverse roles that span across various genres and anime series. What strikes me the most is not just her ability to bring each character to life so uniquely but also the breadth of experiences she manages to embody through her performances.

I can’t help but notice the captivating presence of a character from One Piece, specifically, the resourceful navigator known as Nami. Her fame is well-deserved, stemming not only from her striking design and engaging personality but also from the exceptional voice acting of Akemi Okamura, who breathes life into her in the anime series.

For more than two and a half decades, Okamura has lent her enchanting voice not only to Nami in “One Piece,” but also to several other beloved characters across various anime series. Although she may not have been involved in as many productions as some of her fellow “One Piece” cast members, she has still amassed a considerable number of standout roles from which to select. Here are some of the most memorable ones from her extensive repertoire.

6. Fio Piccolo

Porco Rosso

Back in 1992, Akemi Okamura wasn’t yet known for her portrayal of Nami, but instead, she lent her voice to Fio Piccolo, a main character in “Porco Rosso”. Voice acting in a Studio Ghibli film is considered one of the highest honors for a Japanese voice actor. At 23 years old, this role was what initially established Okamura’s career.

It’s quite intriguing that Fio and Nami bear many resemblances. They are both young women with short, orange hair and lively personalities. Interestingly, before “One Piece” started airing, Akemi Okamura’s work as Nami was similar to her portrayal of Fio Piccolo. Fio has a soothing and gentle voice, yet she can elevate it when she becomes angry or serious. Although neither Eiichiro Oda nor Toei Animation have acknowledged Fio Piccolo as an inspiration for Nami, it seems that the choice of Akemi Okamura for the role might have been influenced by her exceptional performance as Fio.

5. Mito Freecss

Hunter X Hunter (1998 Pilot)

Akemi Okamura provided the voice for Mito Freecss, a significant character from the Hunter x Hunter series, which is another well-known franchise under Weekly Shōnen Jump, a year before One Piece debuted on TV. Specifically, she voiced this role in the 1998 OVA Pilot of Hunter x Hunter. Later on, Akiko Kimura took over the role in the 1999 series, presumably because Okamura was already engaged with working on One Piece around that time.

Interestingly, Mito shares many similarities with Nami, both in appearance and behavior. Okamura’s portrayal truly embodied her as a compassionate yet protective figure. It would have been rewarding to listen to Okamura’s insights about her character in either adaptation of Hunter x Hunter, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.

4. Kido

Zatch Bell!

Following the debut of “One Piece,” Akemi Okamura’s remarkable portrayal of Nami captivated audiences. Notably, this gifted voice actress then took on another animated adaptation by Toei Animation, based on a popular manga from Weekly Shōnen Jump. It’s worth mentioning that Akemi’s colleague, Ikue Ōtani (the voice behind Tony Tony Chopper), also brings the title character to life in “Zatch Bell!”.

Okamura’s portrayal of the mamodo character, Kido, differs significantly from her typical roles. Instead of voicing mature yet young women, which is her usual forte, she was given the opportunity to voice a young boy in this case. Despite this change, she delivered an impressive performance, making Kido sound innocent and youthful. This demonstrates that, like Ikue Otani, Okamura has the ability to voice small yet endearing characters.

3. Saturn

Pokemon

Akemi Okamura has lent her voice to numerous female characters in the long-running Pokemon anime, but a particular role truly shines above the rest. This is none other than Saturn, one of Team Galactic’s leading commanders in the Diamond & Pearl series.

It’s always unexpected to hear Okamura’s distinctive voice emanating from a male character, more so given that Saturn is portrayed as the antagonist. Yet, Okamura skillfully gave him a sinister, power-hungry, and contemptible tone, with a suggestion of misplaced naivety since he’s one of the youngest members of Team Galactic. Interestingly, Okamura resumed this role in 2022 when Saturn made his return in the The Arceus Chronicles TV special.

2. Paninya

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” often had actors from the Japanese voice cast of the Straw Hat crew, such as Kazuya Nakai (who played Zoro and Miles), Kazuki Yao (Franky and Yoki), and Akemi Okamura, who lent her voice to Paninya. Although Paninya is a minor character with limited screen time, Okamura’s outstanding performance made the character unforgettable.

Originally hailing from the town of Rush Valley, Paninya is introduced in the anime as a sneaky thief who swiped Edward Elric’s timepiece. However, after developing friendships with the Elric brothers and Winry, she proves herself to be a reliable ally and a true friend. In essence, Paninya is a petty thief with a heart-wrenching past, but her kindness eventually shines through. Remarkably, she bears a striking resemblance to Nami from another popular series, leading some to speculate that Okamura was specifically cast for this role due to the similarity, and she did an exceptional job in the end.

1. Akemi Hinazuki

Erased

Akemi Okamura has primarily lent her voice to kind or innocent characters in light-hearted series, even characters like Saturn who are supposed to be villains lack a dark or serious edge. However, this trend shifted in 2016 when she voiced Akemi Hinazuki in Erased. This remarkable role demonstrated that Okamura possesses a powerful and versatile vocal range.

In this gripping, realistic tale of “Erased,” I find myself drawn to Akemi Hinazuki, a character who may seem like an antagonist at first glance, but far from the typical heroines of shonen anime such as “One Piece” or “Fullmetal Alchemist.” What sets Hinazuki apart is her chilling portrayal as Kayo’s abusive and manipulative mother. Each time she graces our screens, an eerie tension fills the air, making every scene disturbingly captivating.
