As someone who has spent countless hours stacking digital blocks since I was a child, the latest update for Tetris Forever is music to my ears! The addition of Welltris, a game that combines the classic Tetris formula with a 3D twist, is an exciting development for longtime fans like myself.

The game collection known as “Tetris Forever,” which includes various versions of the classic game Tetris, has announced that it will now include “Welltris” among its games. First introduced in 1989, “Welltris” is a follow-up to the original Tetris and was jointly designed by Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris.

Created by Digital Eclipse, “Tetris Forever” is the third installment in the “Gold Master Series,” showcasing some of the most influential games ever made in the gaming industry. This collection offers a variety of Tetris series titles, spanning from the initial version designed for the Electronika 60 to an original game named “Tetris Time Warp.” Additionally, it includes the Famicom variant of Tetris that was recently added to Nintendo Switch Online on December 12. In a post-release update, “Tetris Forever” has incorporated “Welltris,” which was modeled after an unofficial 3D version of Tetris called “Blockout.” Similar to Pajitnov’s 2D puzzle game, “Welltris” requires players to solve falling-block puzzles, but this time in a three-dimensional pit or well within the game.

Digital Eclipse announced that Tetris Forever players now have access to Welltris, following the December 20 update. This is the first time Welltris has been made available since its original release, as it never had an official re-release. The recent update also includes new features and bug fixes, with one notable addition being that all four players in Tetris Time Warp can now customize their control settings. Additionally, this feature has been expanded to the MS-DOS, Electronika 60, and Apple II versions of the game for cross-platform play. The audio stuttering issue on the Switch has been fixed, but this change has temporarily disabled the rewind feature in some titles. However, the developer has hinted that this feature may return in a future update if feasible.

Following the delivery of what they call “3D Tetris,” Digital Eclipse has decided to concentrate on different aspects within the comprehensive Tetris collection they’ve been working on, which they intend to tackle over the next few months. In their announcement, this American studio revealed their strategic plan leading up to 2025, focusing primarily on their original game, Tetris Time Warp. The developer hinted at a significant update for Tetris Time Warp, packed with numerous new features and game modes, due for release in early 2025. Additionally, they mentioned that a bug affecting the save game functionality in Tetris Forever would be fixed in early January.

As a die-hard Tetris fan, hearing about the arrival of Welltris has me absolutely thrilled! Digital Eclipse has hinted that they’re looking into expanding this compilation even further, but for now, we’ll have to be patient as they focus on squashing any bugs in Tetris Forever – a standout Nintendo Switch title from 2024.

Tetris Forever Update Patch Notes

Greetings to all Digital Eclipse enthusiasts! It’s your editorial director Chris Kohler speaking. The response to our latest release, Tetris Forever, has left us astounded, and we understand that you crave more. Truthfully, so do we! Consequently, since its launch on November 12th, we have been laboring diligently to deliver additional features and, today, a new game for your enjoyment.

Following the triumph of Tetris, its inventor Alexey Pajitnov found himself flooded with demands for a “3D version” of Tetris. However, the question was not just about creating a 3D game, but rather understanding what 3D Tetris would entail. What he eventually developed was an ingenious blend of two-dimensional gameplay mechanics and three-dimensional problem-solving: Welltris!

In this game called “Welltris”, various shapes or Tetriminos, as well as other polyominoes, descend on four sides of a vertical column, and your goal is to arrange them so they form horizontal lines at the bottom. Are you up for the challenge of playing not just one, but four instances of the classic game “Tetris” at once? It’s worth mentioning that Welltris has been officially unavailable since its MS-DOS days, but now you can enjoy it from your cozy living room!

In addition to Welltris, we also announced:

  1. All four players can now remap their controls in Tetris Time Warp.
  2. Remappable controls are also now available for MS-DOS, Electronika 60, and Apple II games on all platforms.
  3. We have fixed the audio stuttering issue that affected some games on the Nintendo Switch platform. This was being caused by a conflict with the Rewind feature, which has now been disabled on Switch in certain games. We will look into restoring it in a later update, if possible.

What’s Next In 2025

We’re eager to share some exciting news with you before the holiday season! This way, you can spend part of your break enjoying the game called Welltris. However, development isn’t halted. In fact, our primary designer and programmer for Tetris Time Warp, Jason Cirillo, has been tirelessly working on a significant update to our original time-manipulating Tetris game. This update will include numerous new features and game modes that we plan to release in early 20XX.

As a dedicated cinephile of games, I’m thrilled to delve deeper into expanding our collection with fresh playable titles, but I’m equally eager to tackle an ongoing issue that’s hindering the smooth operation of save game functionality across the timeless classics in Tetris Forever. Rest assured, our diligent team is tirelessly working on a solution we anticipate rolling out by early January.

Looking forward to hearing more from us? Subscribe to our Digital Eclipse email newsletter, and you’ll receive updates straight to your inbox as they come. Enjoy a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll catch up with you again in the new year for more exciting Tetris Forever content!
