What to Expect From The Outer Worlds 2 in 2025

As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless galaxies and slain innumerable foes across various consoles, I can confidently say that 2025 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year for Xbox gamers. With the lineup that Microsoft has in store, it’s like Christmas came early – and we haven’t even opened our presents yet!

2025 might just be a fantastic year for gaming, as Xbox seems to have quite the roster lined up! Although only Avowed has a fixed release date, we could potentially see titles like The Outer Worlds 2, South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, Towerborne (currently in Steam Early Access), and the much-anticipated return of Fable from Playground Games. Keeping my fingers crossed, as some of these games might still be subject to delays. Yet, even if they’re spread across two years, it’s a lineup that’s hard to ignore!

A while ago, Obsidian Entertainment confirmed they were developing The Outer Worlds 2, but at The Game Awards 2024, they announced a 2025 release date – quite unexpected given that they also plan to launch Avowed in February 2024. It’s worth noting that Avowed was delayed into February to ensure a balanced number of games on Xbox’s Game Pass service, as mentioned by Phil Spencer. This delay makes the timeline more understandable, but it’s clear that Avowed will still significantly contribute to The Outer Worlds 2’s impact next year. With its release scheduled for 2025, fans should manage their expectations accordingly.

Avowed Will Play the Guiding Hand in Early 2025

Due to the release of Avowed in February, there’s a good chance that Xbox and Obsidian will heavily promote it during the beginning of the year. In fact, conversations about Avowed are likely to be prevalent for the first 2-3 months. Although it’s uncertain when The Outer Worlds 2 will debut, it’s predicted to be towards the end of 2025. After Avowed has been launched and some time has passed, we can expect Obsidian to start sharing more details about The Outer Worlds 2. Fans might hear more updates on The Outer Worlds 2 around summertime, with a possibility of some early news before then.

Will The Outer Worlds 2 Be at Xbox’s Rumored January Direct?

For the last two years, Xbox has hosted a Developer Direct event in January. It’s been speculated that another one will take place in January 2025 too.

As a gaming enthusiast, if those Oblivion remake whispers are on point, Xbox has some serious bragging rights coming up! If The Outer Worlds 2 is indeed in the works (fingers crossed), it might make an appearance too. However, given other potential heavy-hitters, its presence could be more subtle compared to them. I’m guessing we’ll catch a glimpse of The Outer Worlds 2 during Summer Game Fest – that’s when I think the floodgates will open!

The Build to The Outer Worlds 2’s Release

When Xbox and Obsidian eventually move forward with the development of “The Outer Worlds 2“, there’s a great deal yet to be unveiled, which promises an intriguing journey. At present, we know very little about the specifics of the game.

  • The Outer Worlds 2 features a new solar system with a new cast.
  • Obsidian has said it will feature more weapons, better visuals, and an increased focus on action.
  • The protagonist is an Earth Directorate Agent.
  • The story revolves around rifts potentially destroying a colony during a war between factions.

In two trailers for The Outer Worlds 2, we see a style and humor reminiscent of the original game, even satirizing its own development process. As we’ve come to expect from this series, there will be additional trailers, interviews, and promotional content showcasing the game’s world, story, characters, and main character. Given that it’s an Obsidian RPG and a sequel, fans can have some confidence in what to anticipate.

  • World: There’s only a handful of planets in The Outer Worlds 1, so it’s likely to be similar in size here. However, Obsidian has said that The Outer Worlds 2 would be twice as big, but what that means exactly remains to be seen. On top of that, twice as big could mean a few things: twice as many planets, the same number of planets with twice the content, etc.
  • Story: Players can expect Obsidian to detail what the rifts are, the standard enemies involved, and the factions at war. They probably won’t be deep dives, but it’ll be interesting to learn about these factions and how players relate to them.
  • Characters: Obsidian excels at companion-based RPGs. Avowed features four companions and The Outer Worlds 1 had six. Somewhere in this ballpark should be expected, each with their own personalities, quests, and story. I’d also bet these companions related to the factions at war. However, I would not bet on The Outer Worlds 2 having romance. That’s just not an Obsidian feature.
  • Protagonist: Players can expect character customization and progression to be somewhat detailed ahead of its launch.

There are two important points to consider about the anticipation for The Outer Worlds 2. Firstly, we don’t know yet what the precise scale of the game is or how “twice as big” translates concretely. Although it’s plausible that it will be similar in size to both Avowed and the original The Outer Worlds, there’s a chance it could be even larger, but we’ll only find out for certain over time. Additionally, there might be unexpected elements about the game that haven’t been disclosed yet.

If Obsidian launches their game in 2025, it will undoubtedly be an exceptional year for the company and Xbox. Regardless, it’s incredibly thrilling to anticipate the possibility of two Obsidian RPGs within just two years. The latest these games might be delayed is until 2026 at most.
