As a seasoned adventurer with countless tales of daring escapades and treacherous journeys etched into my weathered map, I must say that the path you’ve laid out before me in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is one that truly tickles my explorer’s spirit!
Once I vanquished Zoma in Dragon Quest 3 Remake’s main tale, there was a substantial amount of content left to discover! Immediately upon his defeat, I could revisit the Castle of the Dragon Queen and commence my voyage towards Cloudsgate Citadel. Perched high above the initial map, this celestial fortress is brimming with significant post-game activities. Here, I encountered Xenlon, a formidable boss whose conquest opens up the secret post-game dungeon of Dragon Quest 3 Remake – the Temple of Trials.
The Temple of Trials is a hidden dungeon that can only be unlocked through Xenlon’s wish-granting mechanic. When you reach Cloudsgate Citadel, the main goal is to fight and defeat Xenlon. Each time you win, Xenlon will grant one wish from a set list. To make things harder, each time you fight Xenlon, you must defeat them in fewer turns than the previous fight. In this guide, we’ll explain how to reach Xenlon, and how to unlock the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.
How to Reach Xenlon in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Once you’ve vanquished Zoma and reached the end credits in the DQIII Remake, it will technically reset your progress to just before the battle with Zoma. However, there’s a significant change this time: if you revisit the Dragon Queen’s Castle, you’ll now have an opportunity to ascend to a new, unnamed region (commonly known as Heaven within the DQ community).
How to Reach Cloudsgate Citadel in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:
The route to Cloudsgate Citadel is through a series of familiar dungeons. To start your journey, make your way to the Castle of the Dragon Queen and locate the rounded chamber in its northern part. The faerie girl will now have a quest icon above her head. Engage the girl in conversation, then step into the bright beam of light at the room’s center to travel upward.
Initially, you’ll find yourself in a vast, emerald-green open area, marked by a solitary location referred to as the “Secret Spot.” This spot seems to have an entrance leading to what looks like a cave. Nestled within this secret locale is a friendly creature known as a Metal Slime (we call them Alloys). To embark on your journey through past dungeons, step inside the cave.
??? features the following dungeon levels:
- Maw of the Necrogond B1
- Maw of the Necrogond B2
- Orochi’s Lair B3
- Pyramid B4
- Underground Lake B5
- Maw of the Necrogond B6
- Manoza Jail Cells
At the final part of the cave complex, you’ll reach an amphitheater for a battle against the enhanced Terror Troll, similar to the Boss Troll from Manoza Castle but stronger. Once you have vanquished this troll, you will be escorted into Cloudsgate Citadel, which can now be quickly accessed as a teleport destination, either “Zoom” or “Chimera Wing.
Be sure to thoroughly investigate Cloudsgate Citadel. Hidden behind the King is the Heavenly Helm for Warriors. In the northeastern room, you’ll come across the Bard who will present three riddles as a means of obtaining the second Sage’s Stone in the Dragon Quest 3 Remake. This is merely one of many valuable items you’ll discover within this citadel.
How to Reach Xenlon:
Stepping into Cloudsgate Citadel, I can feel the pulse of Xenlon beating just beyond these walls. Inside, the main hall is dominated by a grand throne, with a crimson carpet sweeping out from it, pointing southward. At its end lies a set of stairs spiraling downwards, leading to a lower level. Descending those steps takes me away from the main chamber. In the next room, an elderly man stands ready, offering a drink if I mention my journey towards Xenlon. It seems this potion carries no extraordinary powers, either for better or worse.
To leave the room, locate the door in its southwest corner. That door takes you to Citadel Tower. Be aware that this tower houses some challenging adversaries across multiple levels, so make sure you’re adequately prepared. Ideally, when you first engage Xenlon, you should be at least level 50 – though that’s on the lower side, and it will prove difficult. However, with persistence, we managed to defeat Xenlon when we were level 58 ourselves.
Up on the tower, you’ll find Xenlon. You’ll recognize your destination when you come across a lengthy flight of steps. Make sure to utilize any consumables and store any desirable items in the group’s individual inventories before proceeding. Now, it’s time for some exciting action!
How to Unlock the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
To earn your first wish from Xenlon, you need to triumph within 35 moves or fewer. Once you conquer Xenlon, they will honor their promise and display a list of five potential wishes that seems incomplete. At the bottom of the list, there’s an empty space instead of the last wish. If you press down, you can select this blank area. Opt for this choice to unlock the Temple of Trials.
Xenlon might question how you became aware of this possibility, yet they’ll still comply with your request. They’ll then guide you on locating the entrance, describing it as a “rip or hole” in the very essence of existence.
How to Enter the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:
To gain access to the Temple of Trials, you should ride Ramia the Everbird from Aliahan Island, and then head northward in flight. That’s essentially how it’s done.
While soaring above the ocean, you’ll encounter a surprising spectacle – a radiant light suspended in the sky. As you draw nearer, it appears to expand, hinting at its proximity. Should you brave flying directly towards it, an invitation labeled ‘Enter’ becomes visible. Engage with this prompt, and prepare for a journey that will transport you to the Temple of Trials.
The Temple of Trials is essentially a sprawling labyrinth divided into five distinct areas, resembling the tips of a star. At each star point, you’ll encounter a challenge or trial. Each trial comes with its own set of guidelines and rewards. Successfully completing all five trials will grant you access to the sixth and final trial, a battle against the Grand Dragon.
