As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Astro Bot has stolen the show for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Coming off the back of its well-deserved Game of the Year award, it seems Sony is leaning heavily into this adorable little bot as their new mascot.

I’m thrilled to share that Sony has put some serious cash into a Vegas Sphere spectacle for PlayStation’s big 3-0, and guess who’s stealing the show? None other than my favorite gaming buddy, Astro Bot! Since this Team Asobi platformer just snatched the Game of the Year 2024 award, it feels like Astro Bot is officially stepping up as PlayStation’s fresh new mascot.

2024 will be the 30th year that PlayStation has been active in the gaming industry, and the release of Astro Bot this year couldn’t have been more apt. Not only is it a stylish 3D platformer, but Astro Bot also pays tribute to PlayStation’s illustrious past by featuring over 180 appearances from iconic game characters associated with the brand. Although some significant PlayStation characters are missing from Astro Bot, both critics and gamers have fallen for it. On the commercial side, Astro Bot has been just as successful, selling more than 1.5 million copies by November 3.

Beyond the tremendous praise it received, Astro Bot not only won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024 but also concluded PlayStation’s 30th anniversary with a flourish. Following its triumph in the Game of the Year category, eagle-eyed PlayStation enthusiasts noticed a 30th anniversary celebration for the brand that recently dominated the Vegas Sphere. The eye-catching, 90-second advertisement showcases Astro Bot dancing amid various PlayStation symbols, emblems, and even the PS5 itself. As the ad nears its end, the entire Vegas Sphere mimics the appearance of Astro Bot’s helmet and eyes, offering a final wink to the audience before fading away.

Vegas Sphere Celebrates 30 Years of PlayStation With Astro Bot

For the grand finale of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations, an unanticipated yet lavish advertisement in the form of the Vegas Sphere was a fantastic finishing touch. The festivities were initially announced by Sony in September 2024, with exclusive PS1-style consoles, controllers, and a remote player for the occasion. On December 3, Sony unveiled a heartfelt tribute video showcasing popular PlayStation franchises and expressing gratitude to their dedicated fans.

It’s worth pointing out that Astro Bot received a lot of attention in PlayStation’s Vegas Sphere ad, which might not be a coincidence considering its success at The Game Awards 2024. It wouldn’t shock anyone if PlayStation began to see Astro Bot as their unofficial mascot, given the character’s appealing family-friendly image, marketing potential, and multiple successful games. Both Astro Bot and Team Asobi appear to have a promising future ahead.
