As a seasoned movie-goer who’s spent countless nights engrossed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I find the narrative twist in Batman: Arkham Shadow both intriguing and slightly perplexing. While the unprecedented move of Bruce Wayne disguising himself as Irving “Matches” Malone to explore Blackgate Prison is undeniably captivating, the decision to stretch the story over roughly a week’s time feels like a bold departure from the single, intense nights we’ve grown accustomed to in the Arkham series.
In the game Batman: Arkham Shadow, one of the most unexpected plot twists is when Bruce Wayne assumes the identity of Irving “Matches” Malone to investigate Blackgate Prison. However, what might seem less conventional in this narrative is the extended timeframe the story covers; unlike previous games that take place over a single night, Arkham Shadow spans approximately a week.
This is essential to the plot with Bruce investigating Blackgate during the day and trying to find the whereabouts of the Rat King. Some events stall his progress, such as being injured and needing to visit the infirmary or being thrown into solitary confinement after mopping the floor with Blackgate’s new warden, Lyle Bolton, and each night Bruce suits up as Batman again. The Rats have all congregated at Blackgate anyhow, but knowing Batman has left Gotham City at the mercy of other miscellaneous criminals and villains should hopefully inspire events in future Arkham games.
Every Night in Batman’s Arkhamverse is Ludicrously Eventful
During the days and nights preceding Rat King’s Day of Wrath, Batman abandoned Gotham City without surveillance or vigilance. Given the chaotic nature of nights in the Arkham series, it’s hard to imagine the amount of mischief and criminal activity that could have transpired during those days.
If terrible events were unfolding on the streets of Gotham City while Bruce Wayne was occupied at Blackgate, he likely would have paused his routine to investigate or delegate the task to Alfred Pennyworth, Barbara Gordon (introduced as Oracle in Batman: Arkham Asylum), or perhaps both. However, Batman is currently preoccupied with finding the Rat King because the Rats have threatened two of his most cherished people: his foster brother, Harvey Dent, the District Attorney, and Dr. Leslie Thompkins, their mutual guardian.
This clearly illustrates why Batman is so singularly focused and has a two-pronged vision when it comes to chasing the Rat King, as well as his fierce anger toward rats in general. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that a significant amount of criminal activity often spikes on one night in the Arkhamverse, and it’s uncertain what mischief criminals might cause during a week if Batman is absent or preoccupied.
- Batman: Arkham Origins sees two Blackgate riots/breakouts, eight assassins to subdue, Enigma extortion datapacks and network relays to destroy, and plenty of murder cases to solve in a single night.
- Batman: Arkham Origins sees yet another Blackgate riot that was at least fully contained within the prison in a single night.
- Batman: Arkham Asylum sees an Arkham Island riot/breakout orchestrated by Joker.
- Batman: Arkham City sees Protocol 10 initiated in the eponymous city-wide compound with a handful of super-criminals subdued as well as plentiful Riddler challenges completed and hostages rescued within a single night.
- Batman: Arkham Knight sees Scarecrow and Arkham Knight occupy Gotham City’s interconnected islands with an overwhelming militia presence and a handful of other super-criminals reveling in the chaos, all while Bruce grapples with Joker’s infected blood in his system.
Batman: Arkham Shadow Closes One Arkhamverse Chapter and Opens Another
In “Batman: Arkham Shadow,” the narrative unfolds in a manner that is both personal and ambiguous. This style necessitated the development of characters like Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Dr. Jonathan Crane, Harvey Dent, and Arnold Wesker, leading them towards their transformations into Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Two-Face, and the Ventriloquist respectively. Simultaneously, it’s suggested that Enigma could have been planting his initial set of green question mark trinkets across Gotham City.
Additionally, it appears that the League of Assassins hasn’t significantly influenced Gotham in the Arkhamverse beyond Bruce’s questionable relationship with Shiva. Whether the events of Batman: Arkham Shadow will play a significant role in future stories remains to be seen. However, the day-night cycle introduced by Camouflaj could potentially have a substantial impact as an explanation for how Gotham has changed over time.
