As an old-school Marvel fanatic who’s seen the cinematic universe unfold since its inception, I must say, the antics of Doctor Strange in Marvel Rivals have left me both amused and bewildered. The way he conjures portals to trick opponents is nothing short of ingenious, a testament to the game’s creative depth. But alas, as more players catch on, this mystical ruse may lose its potency, much like my once-beloved Mjolnir that seems to be collecting dust in the Avengers Tower these days.
As a supporter of Marvel Rivals, I’ve witnessed countless instances where players controlling Doctor Strange create portals at the start of matches. These portals often lead opponents unknowingly out of bounds and result in self-knockouts. However, this strategy will become less effective in most games, except for when a Doctor Strange player is trying to pull off a trick. As more players learn about it, either from watching others or through personal experience, they’re unlikely to fall for it for much longer.
In the game Marvel Rivals, the character Doctor Stephen Strange serves as a cunning vanguard, and his ability, Pentagram of Farallah, is undoubtedly one of the most imaginative and opportunistic among all characters in the roster. It’s astonishing to be able to instantly teleport through a loop, and it’s both funny and impressive how Doctor Strange players have managed to outmaneuver or deceive opponents with their clever tactics. However, players won’t always be fooled by mystical portals in Marvel Rivals. As long as Doctor Strange’s subterfuge remains effective, it could be crucial for players to recognize the distinction between a teammate’s portals and an enemy’s from a considerable distance.
How Marvel Rivals Distinguishes Doctor Strange’s Portals Between Friend and Foe
Simply stated, the golden-edged portals are created by our ally Doctor Strange, whereas his adversary’s portals bear a red border.
If common sense were widespread, perhaps there’d be fewer individuals succumbing to cunning ploys. Yet, it’s undeniable that the allure of instantly teleporting through portals, given their engaging real-time effect, can be hard to resist for players.
Similarly, the effectiveness of this troll character may well be due to players strategically positioning their portals right before an active Doctor Strange, who was in the middle of generating his own portals. This often leads opponents to believe that a portal there is from their teammates instead of the enemy’s. In contrast, current gameplay finds Doctor Strange’s portals used more for blocking chokepoints with looping barriers, hindering the progress of enemies on maps like Klyntar’s Symbiotic Surface, particularly in Convergence/Convoy matches. This tactic is quite smart and effective, especially in such maps.
The powerful portals created by Doctor Strange’s Pentagram of Farallah take a considerable amount of time to recharge, making their worth dependent on the thoughtful and strategic positioning of each one.
Starting them off at the beginning of a match has proven beneficial since it either assists teammates in capturing control points, hastens enemy’s demise while they’re still unaware of their surroundings, or gives an edge by allowing a quick exit from the spawn room, thanks to Galacta. Conversely, a well-timed portal at the end of a match could determine the outcome and prevent defeat. If Wong is ever incorporated into the Marvel Rivals team in the future, it’ll be intriguing to observe if he can conjure portals with a similar impact.
Marvel Rivals’ Hilarious Virality May Be the Death of Fun or Gimmicky Tech
In the game Marvel Rivals, it seems unusual that Doctor Strange is classified as a two-star character in terms of complexity, given his effectiveness when supported by skilled healers and his methodical approach to tanking due to limited resources. Despite having impressive portal technology at his disposal, even in its early stages, Doctor Strange may face counters for his stealthy abilities as players become more familiar with enemy strategies and these strategies become widely known through viral memes.
For this character, a quick glance at the hue of a portal’s spinning edge could prevent a cunning Sorcerer Supreme’s trickery. On the other hand, players have the option to challenge Cosmic Selection in the competitive Diamond rank and above on Marvel Rivals, allowing them to restrict anyone they suspect is too powerful.
