Summary
- The Captain plays a vital role as the head and leader of the pirate crew, often being the strongest and most ambitious member.
- The Second-In-Command, or First Mate, assumes command in the Captain’s absence, maintaining authority and speaking for the crew.
- The Cook keeps the crew healthy by providing nourishment, with examples like Sanji being powerful fighters in addition to culinary experts.
As a longtime fan of One Piece and someone who has followed the Straw Hat Pirates on their grand adventure across the Grand Line, I must say that each member brings something unique to the table. However, some roles seem more crucial than others when it comes to ensuring their success.
In the “One Piece” series, pirates play a pivotal role and serve as the main faction. The plot revolves around the Straw Hat crew, but each pirate group in the story adheres to similar structures, with every character having a unique position or specialty within their team. If these characters didn’t fill their respective roles, a pirate crew would lack its distinctive qualities.
While there may be exceptions in “One Piece”, the common pattern among pirate crews regarding the role of each member is generally consistent. Many characters have specific positions within their crews, so let’s examine the shared roles that these pirate groups often have, explaining their duties and providing examples for each role.
The Captain Is The Most Important Role
The Head of a Pirate Crew
Notable Characters | Luffy, Shanks, Gol D. Roger, Whitebeard, Kaido, Big Mom |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | Leader of the Pirate Crew |
The Captain is a vital team member and acts as the symbolic leader for the crew. Usually, crews are given names based on their leaders, who hold the highest bounty among all members because they’re regarded as the flag that everyone else follows. These characters are typically powerful warriors, be it through the control of their Devil Fruit abilities or expertise in Haki.
A crew that loses the respect for their Captain is sure to collapse!
Captains within their crews are often characterized by a high level of ambition. In the world of One Piece, many captains have mastered Conqueror’s Haki, making them among the strongest characters in the series. While they don’t necessarily fill a specific role like other crew members, they serve as the driving force behind their comrades’ aspirations and are the figures their subordinates admire the most.
The Second-In-Command
Also Known As The First Mate
Notable Characters | Zoro, Silvers Rayleigh, Benn Beckman, Marco, King, Katakuri, Killer |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | Assuming command of the crew in the absence of the Captain |
Among the crew members, the one right under the Captain holds significant power. Similar to the Captain, these individuals may not have a specific niche role within the crew, but they assume leadership responsibilities, particularly when the Captain is absent. Since they occupy a high rank, they represent the Captain’s authority on issues and everyone below them is required to follow their orders.
If I can’t even protect my Captain’s dream, then whatever ambition I have is nothing but talk!
In many instances within the world of “One Piece,” certain characters who fill this role tend to maintain a more somber demeanor compared to their captains, sometimes even having to restrain their leaders and their behavior. For instance, Zoro established conditions for Usopp’s return following Enies Lobby, urging Luffy to exhibit greater maturity, and also prevented the crew from rescuing Vivi on several occasions. These characters are often referred to as ‘first mates,’ a title that implies they serve as the physical strength of the crew despite typically being less powerful than their captains.
The Cook Keeps The Crew Healthy
They Keep The Crew Fed and Healthy
Notable Characters | Sanji, Lucky Roux, Streusen, Charlotte Lola, Goldberg |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | Providing food for the crew |
According to its title, it’s the job of the chef to prepare meals for the team members. Sanji is a well-known character who combines his love for cooking with his extensive expertise to create mouthwatering dishes that not only satisfy nutritional needs but also revitalize the crew. However, unlike Sanji, some chefs, such as Streusen, seem content with just meeting the minimum requirements and serving bland food.
Cooking is a gift from the gods…
Additionally, while cooks are typically known for their specialized roles, they can also possess significant power. For instance, Sanji, being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, is not only an exceptional cook but also a formidable fighter, holding the position of ‘second mate’. Similarly, Lucky Roux of the Red Haired Pirates, renowned for his cooking skills, is also one of the fastest characters in One Piece, demonstrating that he is a powerful fighter as well.
The Navigator May Be The Most Important
The Reason Why The Crew Gets Anywhere
Notable Characters | Nami, Lafitte, Bepo, Building Snake, Road |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | Getting the crew from point A to B |
In the vast world of “One Piece,” while the Captain holds the highest rank and is considered most important, it’s the navigator whose role is arguably the most vital for practicality. Their responsibility lies primarily in navigating the turbulent seas to reach numerous islands, a task that requires extensive knowledge of oceanography and the cardinal directions of the world.
Luffy says he will be the Pirate King. I can’t be satisfied with being an ordinary navigator!
With them absent, the team would be utterly bewildered. In essence, the navigator’s role is so critical that it’s often referred to as the second-in-command. The navigation plans for the islands are usually assigned to the navigator, who then plots the optimal route for the team, sometimes making difficult choices about altering course if they perceive a danger.
The Doctor Plays A Vital Role
Characters In Charge Of Keeping Everyone In Top Shape
Notable Characters | Chopper, Trafalgar Law, Marco, Doc Q, Doctor Hogback |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | To take care of everyone’s health on the crew |
The doctor on the team holds the crucial responsibility of ensuring everyone’s health and healing any injuries that occur. In Chopper’s unique case, his exceptional skills in medicine make him an expert in creating instant solutions for illnesses, regardless of their initial complexity.
I’ll be a doctor who can find a remedy for every illness, as I believe that no ailment on Earth is beyond curing!
Contrarily, numerous doctors depicted in the series rely on their Devil Fruit abilities to heal their crew members. For instance, Law employs his Ope Ope no Mi’s ‘Room’ ability to disassemble individuals and remove any illness or sickness from them. On the other hand, Marco, equipped with his Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, can cure ailments by purifying them with his blue flames, making him an ideal healer in the series. Although their approaches vary, the fundamental concept remains that doctors function as the healers within their crews.
Shipwright Keeps The Ship In Perfect Condition
The One To Look After The Ship
Notable Characters | Franky, Stansen |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | To make sure the ship stays in the best state |
Despite the crucial nature of this job on a pirate ship, it isn’t often seen among pirates. Much like a doctor looks after the health of the entire crew, a shipwright ensures the ship remains healthy too. Given the treacherous nature of the seas and the necessity for a seaworthy vessel for travel, the shipwright maintains the ship in top condition to ensure safe sailing for the crew.
When a man makes a ship, he makes it part of himself with a DON!
If a ship like the Straw Hat vessel, the Thousand Sunny, is meticulously maintained and kept in top shape, it’s believed that its very spirit, known as a Klabautermann, will manifest. Franky has constructed this magnificent ship using the finest materials on Earth and equipped it with all the necessary amenities, making it an ideal vessel for any crew.
The Sniper Provides Long-Range Protection
An Important Combat Role
Notable Characters | Usopp, Yasopp, Van Auger, Charlotte Perospero, Izou |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | To fight enemies at range and provide cover fire for allies |
The role of a sniper may not be as crucial as other roles mentioned earlier, since pirate crews can function effectively without one. This position typically belongs to individuals who are skilled in handling long-range weapons, often providing protective fire for their comrades or engaging enemies from a secure and distant location.
I’m the sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates! Don’t underestimate me!
Among the characters, Usopp stands out as a prime illustration, and he is also recognized for his expertise in weaponry. This stems from his invention, the Clima-Tact, and his personal use of slingshots. As they advance, it appears that sharpshooters can imbue their ammunition or projectiles with Haki, as demonstrated by Yasopp when he utilized this skill to destroy the Going Luffy, a vessel belonging to Bartolomeo’s pirate crew.
The Helmsman Drives The Ship
The Pilot of the Crew
Notable Characters | Jimbei, Scopper Gaban, Jesus Burgess, Shiki |
---|---|
Main Responsibility | To steer the ship |
In a nautical team, the helmsman and navigator work together as their skills are indispensable in guiding and controlling the ship. The helmsman receives directions from the navigator to steer the ship towards its destination. A notable example is Jimbei, who demonstrated exceptional skill on his first voyage aboard the Thousand Sunny, maneuvering the ship through the waves with an expertise that left the crew in awe. This remarkable performance earned him high praise from the rest of the team.
If you can control it well, this ship is invincible!
To put it in my own words as an enthusiast, it’s fascinating to note that the Straw Hat pirates have been sailing their ship without a designated helmsman throughout their journey past the Wano arc. While having a skilled helmsman undoubtedly ensures smoother and more precise navigation, I personally believe this role isn’t necessarily as vital compared to other positions within the crew. Of course, not everyone can steer a ship as proficiently or consistently as a dedicated helmsman, but the Straw Hats have proven that they can manage quite well without one.
The Archaeologist And Musician Aren’t Very Important
But They’re Still Great To Have
Unlike other crews, neither an archaeologist nor a musician is essential for their team composition. However, the Straw Hats stand out as they have both an archaeologist and one of the rare pirate crews with a musician. For Robin, her role as an archaeologist fits seamlessly into the crew during her pursuit to uncover the true past of the world, which aligns perfectly with Luffy’s adventure.
Fools who don’t respect the past are doomed to repeat it.
It’s evident that Luffy, much like a musician yearns for something above all else from the onset of his adventure. Finally, his longing was fulfilled with Brook, a remarkable musician and surprisingly robust individual as well.
