Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Has Assembled a Dream Team of Developers

The team behind the upcoming RPG, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, includes several experienced developers who previously worked at BioWare on the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While details about Fate of the Old Republic are currently scarce, it’s being designed as a game inspired by BioWare’s classic Knights of the Old Republic. However, it’s important to remember that this new game won’t be a direct sequel or continuation of the Knights of the Old Republic storyline.

The original Knights of the Old Republic games were once considered official parts of the Star Wars story, but that changed when Disney bought the franchise in 2012. Now, while characters and ideas from KOTOR have reappeared in new Star Wars content, the games’ storylines are classified as “Legends” – a collection of stories that aren’t considered part of the main Star Wars timeline, alongside popular books like Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire. The upcoming game, Fate of the Old Republic, might include more characters and elements from KOTOR, especially since it’s being developed by some of the same people who made the original games.

Fate of the Old Republic’s Dream Team

  • Casey Hudson – Game Director
  • Dan Fessenden – Senior Technical Designer
  • Caroline Livingstone – Director of Production and Performance
  • Ryan Hoyle – Chief Technology Officer
  • Melanie Faulknor – Director of External Development
  • Pascal Blanche – Art Director

Last year at The Game Awards, a new Star Wars game, Fate of the Old Republic, was announced. Casey Hudson, who previously directed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the original Mass Effect trilogy, will be directing the game. His studio, Arcanaut Studios, is developing the title and recently shared details about its team. Excitingly, three people who worked on the original KOTOR – Dan Fessenden, Caroline Livingstone, and Ryan Hoyle – are also joining the project.

Beyond the team members with experience on the original KOTOR, Hudson has hired Melanie Faulknor, a former BioWare employee who contributed to Mass Effect 3 and several Dragon Age titles, as the director of external development. Pascal Blanche, an art director with 25 years in the gaming industry – including work at companies like Ubisoft, Behaviour Interactive, Warner Bros., and Wizards of the Coast – is also joining the project.

A major concern for fans of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is that the developing studio, Arcanaut Studios, is relatively new, having only been founded less than a year ago. However, it’s reassuring to see that Hudson has quickly assembled a team of experienced developers. While Hudson’s involvement initially created excitement, a successful game requires a large team. These veterans, with their history on BioWare’s most popular games, could be key to finally delivering the Star Wars game fans have wanted for over twenty years.

It’s unclear when fans will be able to play the new game. Game development is a lengthy process, and it looks like the studio working on it, Arcanaut Studios, is still getting established. While rumors about Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic suggested a 2030 release, those have been dismissed. The game could come out sooner, but Star Wars fans will have other options to enjoy in the meantime, like Galactic Racer coming out later this year.
