If you have an Xbox, you can now try the multiplayer shooter Blindfire for free. Created by Double Eleven, the game first became available in early access on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC (through Steam and Epic Games) back in October 2024.
Unlike many first-person shooters, Blindfire focuses on using light to your advantage. The game’s arenas are very dark, so players must carefully consider when to shoot, as the flash from gunfire can give away their location.
Blindfire Has Gone Free-to-Play
Starting May 5, 2026, Xbox Series X and S owners will be able to download Blindfire without needing a Game Pass subscription. The game is now free-to-play thanks to the developer, Double Eleven, who have changed it from a $9 purchase. Blindfire is also free on the PlayStation Store. Currently, it still costs $9 on Steam and the Epic Games Store, but Steam says it will become free on May 5th as well.

Double Eleven is a development studio that often assists major game companies like Rockstar Games in porting their games to PC and other platforms. Despite this impressive work, their own multiplayer game, Blindfire, hasn’t performed as well as anticipated. Currently, the game has “Mixed” reviews on Steam, and SteamDB shows a peak of only 77 players playing at the same time. Reviews on other platforms, like the Microsoft Store where it averages 2.5 out of 5 stars, have also been generally unenthusiastic.
I’ve been following Blindfire for a while now, and the developers haven’t really said why they’re making it free-to-play on consoles and PC. But honestly, it makes sense! The biggest problem with the game has been that the servers felt empty – it was tough to find matches and the wait times were really long. Hopefully, making it free will bring in a ton of new players. It basically removes the risk of buying it, so anyone curious about a different kind of FPS can give it a try and see if it clicks with them. I’m hoping this breathes new life into the game!

If you’re an Xbox player thinking about trying Blindfire, you’ll be glad to know it supports cross-platform play with matches for up to eight players. Unlike the PlayStation version which requires a PS Plus subscription for online play, the Xbox Store doesn’t mention any such requirement for Blindfire. Something to consider before you download! Also, Blindfire is still in Early Access, and the developers, Double Eleven, haven’t yet shared their plans for the game beyond 2026.
