As a long-time fan of Call of Duty, I have had the pleasure of following the lives and experiences of some truly iconic characters throughout the years. Among them all, none have left as lasting an impression as Captain John Price. This no-nonsense leader of Task Force 141 is the epitome of courage, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to his mission and his team.
From his humble beginnings in the original Modern Warfare trilogy, Price quickly became a fan favorite with his selfless sacrifices, dry wit, and unparalleled skills on the battlefield. His life experiences have taken him through some of the most intense conflicts of our time, from the war-torn streets of Afghanistan to the cold, dark halls of a nuclear facility in Russia.
Price’s loyalty to his team is second to none, and his sacrifices for the greater good are legendary. He has shown time and again that he will do whatever it takes to protect his comrades and complete the mission, even if it means putting himself in harm’s way. His unwavering commitment to his duty is a shining example of what it means to be a true hero.
But don’t let Price’s serious demeanor fool you – this man has a sense of humor that would put most stand-up comedians to shame. From his sarcastic quips during firefights to his dry, deadpan delivery, Price’s wit is as sharp as his aim.
In short, Captain John Price is the embodiment of what it means to be a hero – selfless, loyal, and always willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. He is a true icon in the world of video games, and I can’t wait to see what adventures he embarks on next in the latest Modern Warfare reboot.
And as a final note, I’d like to leave you with this little joke that Price himself would no doubt appreciate: Why did Price go to therapy? Because his PTSD was starting to affect his aim. Ah, Captain, you never fail to make me laugh!
Besides being celebrated for its constantly changing strategies in the cherished Multiplayer sectors, Call of Duty is also renowned for its richly developed and engaging characters that inhabit the various campaigns it has offered throughout the years. Some of these characters have even been given playable roles within the narrative, adding a layer of enjoyment and depth to their stories, captivating numerous players.
In Call of Duty, the standout characters are those who are playable during the Campaign, be it an entire campaign or only a few missions. These characters truly shine among the others.
8. Dmitri Petrenko
A Brave Soldier & Ally of Reznov Who Fought Through World War 2
- Playable in: Call of Duty: World at War
The game “World at War” offers an engaging storyline by letting players explore World War II from two distinct perspectives. One perspective follows the U.S.’s offensive in the Pacific, while the other immerses you in the Soviets’ struggle against Germany, leading up to Berlin. The main character for the Soviet side is Dmitri Petrenko, a man whose actions rather than words shaped his character throughout World War II.
In the game titled “World at War“, players have the ability to impact the morality and intensity of war directly, either by mercilessly killing surrendering Germans or by being relentless in combat. Dmitri, who was easily influenced by the moral aspects of warfare, found his voice as a friend of Reznov in “Black Ops“. However, his tenure as a hero was cut tragically short when he fell victim to Project Nova.
7. Gary “Roach” Sanderson
A Loyal Sergeant of Task Force 141 Tasked With Finding Makarov
- Playable in: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Gary “Roach” Sanderson, a beloved character from the original Modern Warfare era before the reboot, was a close ally to Task Force 141. He joined forces with Price, Soap, Ghost, and Frost in various missions aimed at averting and deterring World War 3. Despite not having any dialogues, Roach became a favorite among players due to his unique personality.
In numerous missions, Roach earned affection due to his character, and when he was deceived and murdered by Shepherd, only to be cremated with Ghost, it presented an unexpected and heart-wrenching turn of events that has left many gamers still in mourning.
6. Raul Menendez
The Drug Lord and Terrorist Leader of Cordis Die Who is Unstoppable
- Playable in: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Despite being an antagonist, what’s truly chilling about Raul Menendez isn’t just his unrestrained anger, but rather his insight. Raul Menendez is a villain who has motives that resonate deeply, particularly in the wake of his family’s demise and his encounters with American agents such as Alex Mason and Jason Hudson.
Raul Menendez’s position isn’t higher due to the fact that he’s not a character players can control extensively. Instead, they experience his destructive actions during the mission Time and Fate, where Menendez becomes enraged and slaughteres soldiers in an attempt to save his sister.
5. Bell
A Former Member of Perseus, Manipulated
- Playable in: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
In Black Ops Cold War, the main character wasn’t particularly chatty, but players had some room to shape characters through critical decisions, thanks to the game’s emphasis on choice and dialogue options reminiscent of a traditional RPG. This aspect helped create a more dimensional character in Bell, allowing players to essentially voice them despite their silence, as they filled in the gaps.
Bell’s appeal as a playable character wasn’t solely due to him serving as a player’s vessel, but rather because he was a victim of the CIA. Although he had questionable allegiances, being part of the Soviet Union’s Perseus, he was manipulated into becoming an American patriot, eventually leading to his tragic demise at the hands of CIA agents in order to expose a dark conspiracy for the greater good.
4. David “Section” Mason
A Proud Soldier Who Won’t Falter Through Trauma
- Playable in: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
David Mason is the son of Alex Mason and held the rank of Lieutenant Commander for the United States, with his decisions significantly shaping the outcome of the war in 2025. A charismatic character plagued by a troubled history, playing as him and influencing the storyline in Black Ops 2 cements his place among the standout characters in some of the finest entries in the Call of Duty series.
Mason has a deep comprehension of war’s impact, given that it claimed Frank Woods’ legs, his father, and perhaps his closest companion. However, armed with the right principles, David Mason remains unconquered, overcoming the hardships he encounters.
3. John “Soap” MacTavish
A Novice Who Becomes a Captain for Task 141
- Playable in: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
In the original Modern Warfare trilogy, John “Soap” MacTavish was the cherished hero that numerous players took delight in embodying. Soap’s character became more endearing with each new installment, and his witty exchanges with Price and other Task Force 141 members added to his Scottish allure, enhancing his appeal even further.
In most series, characters like Soap are usually confined to a single game. However, uniquely, Soap became playable across his entire series, and players grew fond of him because they felt they were embodying him. His silence was frequently interpreted by players as they imagined his character and the missions he embarked upon. Although he appears in the Modern Warfare reboot, the original Soap is still cherished by many fans.
2. Alex Mason
A CIA Operative, Brainwashed by Soviets to Derail America
- Playable in: Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share some insights about the pivotal character who links the Black Ops series – myself, or rather, Alex Mason, a Marine with an exceptional record of service. In a bid to assassinate Fidel Castro, I joined forces with the CIA. Unfortunately, during this operation, I was captured, and ended up in Soviet hands, becoming a prisoner at Vorkuta. There, I was used as a guinea pig for their brutal brainwashing experiments, which ultimately set me on a path to trigger World War 3 and the tragic assassination of JFK.
Alex Mason is an exceptional main character, and the game Black Ops revolves around him as he navigates numerous thrilling twists and dramatic tension. From a riot in a prison, a lone mission inside a clandestine facility, to being subjected to the CIA’s interrogation techniques, Alex Mason never wavers in his loyalty to his nation and his bond with Woods.
1. John Price
The No-Nonsense Captain of Task Force 141
- Playable in: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023)
Without a doubt, Captain John Price stands as one of the most legendary characters in the history of the Call of Duty series, spanning over several decades. Known for his unmatched heroism and being among the greatest video game characters ever created, it’s only fitting that he appears in every installment of the Modern Warfare franchise, whether original or remade. Selfless to a fault, full of humor, and never hesitating to do what is right – whatever the cost – Price has become an icon like none other.
Captain Price’s selfless actions, unwavering dedication to his comrades, and battlefield prowess make him an essential figure for any series aiming to create a compelling character with an endearing appeal, despite their sometimes reluctant inclination towards charm.
