Ghost of Tsushima Gets Anime By Psycho-Pass Creator

Summary

  • Anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends in 2027 with Gen Urobuchi writing the story.
  • Takanobu Mizuno directing the series, handled by Kamikaze Douga, Crunchyroll, and Aniplex.
  • A live-action movie adaptation has been announced, featuring a Japanese cast primarily in Japanese.

In my perspective, one of the renowned creations from Sucker Punch Studios – “Ghost of Tsushima” – is being transformed into an anime series. This captivating game made its debut in 2020 and has garnered widespread acclaim from critics and media platforms alike, even earning a perfect score of 40/40 on Famitsu, a significant accomplishment for Japanese games, as foreign games often face additional hurdles to achieve the maximum score.

In this game, the backdrop is 13th century Japan, following an attempted Mongol invasion at Tsushima (an actual historical event). Jin Sakai, Lord Shimura’s nephew, aims to unite the five powerful clans on the island against these invaders. However, the Mongols possess superior technology, turning the initial battle into a devastating loss for Japan. Driven by vengeance and determination, Jin Sakai sets off on a quest to regain control of the island from the Mongol occupation.

What We Know So Far

The upcoming anime is set to derive from Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, scheduled for release in 2027. At this point, few details have been disclosed, but it’s been officially announced that Gen Urobuchi will pen the story. Urobuchi gained recognition as the creator of Psycho-Pass and a significant contributor to Puella Magi Madoka Magica, where he not only wrote scripts but also handled series composition. In the international fan community, he is affectionately dubbed “Urobutcher” for his unflinching approach to character deaths when they serve the plot, suggesting that this series may tackle mature themes.

The upcoming series will be overseen by Takanobu Mizuno, who was also responsible for directing the first episode of “Star Wars: Visions.” This standalone episode, known as “The Duel,” has been highly acclaimed among viewers and is often recognized as one of the strongest entries in the anthology.

Given that Sony, Aniplex, and Crunchyroll are all involved in the production process, it’s reasonable to expect that this series will debut on Crunchyroll as an exclusive stream when it first airs. Notably, the animation for this project is being handled by Kamikaze Douga (known for Pop Team Epic and Batman Ninja), rather than any of its subsidiary studios such as A-1 Pictures or CloverWorks.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends

In simpler terms, “Legends” is an online multiplayer version in the “Ghost of Tsushima” series that draws inspiration from Japanese legends and folklore. Players can select from four roles (Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin) to team up with friends or find opponents through matchmaking. Similar to many other online games, it has a less linear narrative, providing ample opportunity for the creative team to develop an original storyline.

A film version based on the original video game, set to be live-action, has been announced, and its director, Chad Stahelski, has expressed his intention for it to showcase a Japanese cast and predominantly use the Japanese language instead of English. Given the success of Shogun, this could be an opportune moment for such an adaptation. However, since then, there hasn’t been much official news regarding the production (though whispers of a cast have surfaced, it remains unverified).

The upcoming anime adaptation, titled “Ghost of Tsushima,” will draw inspiration from the multiplayer mode, “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.” Renowned screenwriter Gen Urobuchi is responsible for penning the scripts, while director Takanobu Mizuno oversees the production of this series.
