Who is Saimori Miyo?

A Beautiful and Timid Young Girl With a Tormented Past

Novel Volume 2

Miyo Saimori is the eldest child in the distinguished Saimori family, an illustrious lineage known for their bearers of the extraordinary Gift. People with the Gift have unique powers that allow them to battle against malevolent spirits called Grotesqueries, which are dangerous entities that can bring destruction if not contained properly.

In ordinary life, humans don’t have the capacity to see spirits or fight spectral creatures. Only those who possess a unique gift known as Spirit Sight can do so. Since Miyo was born from the Saimori lineage, it was anticipated that she too would eventually manifest her abilities and join the ranks of individuals with Spirit Sight, much like her half-sister.

Despite being born into the Saimori family, Miyo didn’t manifest any abilities until she turned 19. Miyo was a result of an arranged marriage between her father, Shinichi, and mother, Sumi, who hailed from the Usuba family, a highly respected lineage recognized for their potent powers or Gifts. Unlike ordinary Gift-users who were sent to fight Grotesqueries, the Usubas were famed for challenging other Gift-users, making them formidable adversaries.

Despite their influential status due to their special abilities, the Usubas encountered a critical period in their official affairs. To preserve the family, Sumi married into the Saimori lineage and gave birth to Miyo, who was endowed with Dream-Sight. However, to ensure Miyo had a typical life, her mother suppressed her powers. Although Sumi aimed for Miyo to avoid exploitation, this strategy ironically led to problems as the Saimori family were renowned for utilizing individuals with special abilities. Consequently, Miyo was unable to employ her gift or gain Spirit-Sight, which resulted in her being shunned and isolated by the family. This ostracization intensified following her mother’s demise, plunging Miyo into a deep depression.

Over time, Miyo grew up, and her father wed Kanoko, who gave birth to Kaya, their second daughter from a noble family. Endowed with the Gift and Spirit-Sight, Kaya ascended in status. This advantage, however, granted her and her mother permission to mistreat Miyo both verbally and physically.

On further examination, it’s astonishing to think that she is part of a prominent family, given her tattered kimono, unfit even for resale. Her neck and wrists appear remarkably thin, her fingers are pale and cracked, and her hair lacks luster and shows signs of damage.

Sadly, Miyo found herself without anyone to turn to for help when Hana Kanao, the former caretaker, was let go by her father, leaving Miyo with parents who were not supportive. Shinichi, forced into an arranged marriage with Sumi by his own father, had to end his relationship with Kanoko. This left Kanoko resentful towards Miyo, leading her to treat Miyo poorly and eventually relegate her to a servant’s role in her own home.

Regrettably, a lifetime of continual bullying and mistreatment left Miyo with a poor self-image, convinced she wasn’t good enough to marry the head of the Kudo family due to lacking a Gift and feeling her appearance was inferior. Years of mistreatment and being constantly compared to her younger sister took its toll, as Miyo began to view herself unfavorably and also measure herself against her seemingly exceptional sibling. To make matters worse, Miyo’s long-time crush, Kouji Tatsuishi, was also arranged to marry her younger sister. However, despite the mistreatment from many, Kouji valued and often consoled Miyo.

Yet, Miyo swiftly found herself betrothed to Kiyoka Kudo, which offered her an escape from her abusive home life. While this development brought hope to Miyo, it also meant she spent her childhood in poverty, as her father withheld financial support and barred her from education. Consequently, Miyo felt compelled to work hard to maintain the Kudo’s favor, for fear of becoming homeless if their marriage failed.

Over time, my significance and worth seem to be diminishing more and more. In contrast, Kaya is increasingly respected here, while my treatment grows less favorable day by day.

Despite Kiyoka appearing distant and frosty, it was evident to him that Miyo harbored a kind spirit and had endured cruel treatment within the Saimori household. Upon noticing the worn-out garments she wore, Kiyoka felt compelled to assist Miyo in restoring her self-assurance and improving her life. At first, Miyo felt a bit daunted by him, but soon grew fond of him and resolved to better herself, as her confidence blossomed now that she was free from the abusive environment.

What Are Her Supernatural Abilities?

The Dream-Sight Ability Is a Rare and Exceptional Power

It turns out that Miyo possesses the extraordinary gift of Dream-Sight, which allows her to venture into people’s dreams and alter them, as well as glimpse into the past and future. However, her mother, aware of its immense power and tendency for misuse, had locked away this ability within a Sakura tree. This hidden talent will only be revealed when needed in the future.

As I moved on from the Saimori residence, it was in my dreams that Miyo’s extraordinary Dream-Sight abilities started to surface. Unbeknownst to her at the time, these were not mere nightmares but manifestations of her unique talents. However, it was Kiyoka Kudo, head of the Anti-Grosqueries Unit and a potent Gift-user herself, who began to sense that Miyo might possess supernatural powers.

  • Dream-Sight can manipulate and brainwash the dreams of others.
  • It can also function as clairvoyance, warning Miyo of dangers to come.
  • Dream-Sight is only manifested in women within the Usuba family.
  • This ability also allows the user to see the past and the future.

It’s understandable why Sumi didn’t want Miyo to misuse her extraordinary talent, as the power of Dream-Sight is remarkably potent. To employ this skill, the user needs to have a psychic connection with the person they intend to influence. Though it involves waiting, everyone, including humans, are bound by the necessity of rest, making them vulnerable to this ability. Miyo was born with a supernatural gift that could effortlessly control others, but given her compassionate character, she’s unlikely to misuse her power.

My Happy Marriage is available to stream on Netflix.
