Initially, the early LEGO games didn’t strive for as much complexity as they do today, but they excelled in creating highly refined, concentrated stories that accurately represented their source materials. The 2008 game, LEGO Batman, embodies this approach perfectly.
Instead of expanding its universe in later versions, the initial LEGO Batman game concentrated solely on Batman, his family, and the villains from his famous rogues gallery. By focusing exclusively on Batman, developers TT Games crafted a vivid tribute to all aspects of Batman’s lore, and in doing so introduced newcomers to some lesser-known characters and tales within the series. Although grand-scale games like LEGO Batman 3 and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga offer more characters, locations, and content, it could be refreshing to revisit the era of simpler LEGO games. There’s even a Marvel superhero who could effortlessly headline their own standalone LEGO journey.
It’s Time for a LEGO Spider-Man Game
The Spider-Verse Naturally Lends Itself to The LEGO Game Formula
Back in 2014, I stumbled upon the captivating saga known as the Spider-Verse, one of comic history’s most enduring and popular multiverse tales. The success of the animated movies, “Into the Spider-Verse” and “Across the Spider-Verse,” has undeniably contributed to its lasting appeal. Despite the Marvel multiverse’s virtually limitless potential with its vast array of characters, the Spider-Verse manages to offer a refreshing level of creative freedom within a more concentrated focus, making it an ideal candidate for a standalone LEGO gaming adventure.
In the vibrant setting of the Spider-Verse, a LEGO game featuring Spider-Man would continue to provide numerous characters for players to acquire, ensuring diversity in both character aesthetics and gaming experiences. For example, a playable LEGO Miles Morales might harness bioelectricity, whereas Spider-Man 2099 could soar through the air and Spider-Man Noir could employ firearms.
In a LEGO Spider-Man game, they might take inspiration from the LEGO Batman game’s suit system to make the character of Peter Parker more distinctive. This would allow players to access unique abilities depending on the costume worn by Spider-Man. For instance, if Peter Parker dons his Spider-Armor suit, players could receive an additional heart, while wearing his Fear Itself Uru costume might grant him blades as weapons.
In simpler terms, when it comes to Spider-Man’s enemies, there are already many well-known adversaries, but this list becomes even more extensive when you consider different universe variations. A LEGO game based on the Spider-Verse could be a blast by combining various multiverse versions of villains such as Green Goblin, Lizard, Electro, Kraven, and Venom into one exciting storyline.
There’s Plenty of Source Material for a LEGO Spider-Man Game to Adapt
From a passionate fan’s perspective, if a hypothetical LEGO Spider-Man game were to eschew an original narrative, it could draw inspiration from a wealth of existing material. Since the hero first swung into action in 1962, countless Spider-Man comics have been published, and many of these tales would translate brilliantly into engaging LEGO game missions.
For instance, the epic “Ends of the Earth” story, the captivating Hobgoblin saga, the heartwarming “Happy Birthday,” and of course, the multiple Spider-Verse runs all hold immense potential. These stories could provide a thrilling journey for players, immersing them in the rich tapestry of the Spider-Man universe.
After eight live-action Spider-Man movies, there’s enough content available for a LEGO Spider-Man video game to be created. This game would allow players to command the Spider-Men portrayed by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland as they navigate their individual storylines.
