The character known as “The Man Without Fear” is gearing up for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has made brief appearances in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” and “Echo,” he’s now set to take center stage once more, leading his own series titled “Daredevil: Born Again“. It has been nearly seven years since Netflix canceled “Daredevil,” but with the upcoming series, it seems that the MCU is resurrecting the storyline from the Defendersverse.
Regarding some initial uncertainty about whether this iteration of Matt Murdock is the same one portrayed by Charlie Cox in Netflix’s Daredevil, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) leader Kevin Feige has reassured fans that Daredevil: Born Again is indeed a continuation and not a variant from another universe. Instead of being labeled as Daredevil season 4, Born Again emphasizes that it’s taking the character in a fresh direction within the MCU. With this new installment, there is excitement about the potential for significant crossover events inspired by Marvel Comics.
Devil’s Reign is an Iconic Comic Crossover
As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share some insights on a fresh comic event that’s been unfolding since December 2021 up until May 2022 – it’s titled “Devil’s Reign.” Penned by Chip Zdarsky with striking artwork from Marco Checchetto, this crossover has redefined the notorious Spider-Man and Daredevil antagonist, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, as a menacing threat on par with the Avengers.
In this gripping narrative, Fisk exploits loopholes in his memory regarding Daredevil’s true identity, which leads him to enact laws that target anti-vigilantes. This results in outlawing key characters from the Fantastic Four to Moon Knight!
In an unexpected turn of events, New York City finds itself at the center of a power struggle. Formerly outlawed Avengers member Tony Stark and infuriated Luke Cage vie for the mayoral position against Wilson Fisk. The narrative also involves Doctor Octopus, who, with the help of Reed Richards’ inter-dimensional portal, summons alternate versions of Doc Ock, Hulk, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine. Although this might seem far-fetched for the usually realistic Daredevil series, complications arise as Alfred Molina is not confirmed to reprise his role as the main MCU’s Doctor Octopus. Jessica Jones, who had previously eliminated David Tennant’s Purple Man, finds a way around this plot twist similar to the loose adaptation of comics in Captain America: Civil War.
As a fan, I find it highly unlikely that we’ll see the Fantastic Four grace our screens ahead of their MCU debut in 2025’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which could potentially make Sue Storm’s prominent role in “Devil’s Reign” somewhat problematic. The absence of Miles Morales from the MCU is another factor to consider, as his involvement in this crossover is yet to be confirmed.
The climactic battle where Kingpin kills Matt Murdock’s identical twin seems challenging to incorporate into “Devil’s Reign,” given that it’s a pivotal moment from the arc. If this iconic death scene doesn’t take place, the emotional resonance of “Devil’s Reign” could be diminished significantly. However, I believe another major character’s demise might serve as an adequate catalyst for Daredevil to come close to killing Kingpin before the end of “Born Again.
In this emerging period with Kingpin in control, it’s likely that organized crime will flourish in New York City, paving the way for Muse to emerge as a new antagonist in “Born Again”. The trailer hints at Wilson Fisk’s attorney, Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (played by Joel Osteen), being incarcerated, implying that Bullseye from “Daredevil” season 3 will play a significant role. Fortunately, “Born Again” introduces some crucial allies for Matt Murdock. Although he’s not in the spotlight during “Devil’s Reign”, Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle/The Punisher seems poised for a team-up, as Daredevil may seek his help when vigilantes are banned. Similarly, the brief glimpse of Hector Alaya/White Tiger in the “Born Again” trailer suggests she could be a valuable ally.
What Devil’s Reign Could Mean for the MCU?
Could it be possible that Vincent D’Onofrio’s hints about his role as Kingpin and the potential adaptation of “Devil’s Reign” into the MCU are pointing towards a connection between “Born Again” and “Devil’s Reign”? Initially, Marvel Studios had planned for an extensive 18-episode season return for Daredevil, but with this now reduced to only nine episodes, it seems that “Born Again” might not have enough space to fully adapt “Devil’s Reign”. However, showrunner Dario Scardapanei could still be setting the stage for a larger follow-up.
Significantly, there’s speculation surrounding the possibility that the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” and a potential “Devil’s Reign” adaptation might introduce other characters from the Defenders universe. Already confirmed is Jon Bernthal’s return as the Punisher, a significant detail teased in the trailer. This has sparked discussions among fans about whether other Defenders are being held back from the spotlight. Sharp-eyed viewers detected a reference to Harlem’s Paradise nightclub in the “Born Again” trailer, which played a crucial role in both seasons of “Luke Cage.” Additionally, there’s been a lot of chatter about Krysten Ritter reprising her character, Jessica Jones, within the MCU.
A portion of the storyline “Devil’s Reign” involves Kingpin establishing teams similar to the Thunderbolts to hunt down vigilantes. This connection makes it seem natural to transition into Jake Schreier’s “Thunderbolts*“. It appears that at least part of this film may take place in New York, the setting for the storyline “Born Again“, with CIA Director Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) portrayed as the new owner of the former Avengers tower. While Kingpin isn’t yet confirmed for “Thunderbolts*“, if the events of “Devil’s Reign” don’t intersect with those of “Born Again“, the corrupt mayor could grow into a more significant menace as the Marvel Cinematic Universe approaches “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Spider-Man 4“.
Civil War bridged the gap between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War. A less action-packed movie featuring multiple characters could serve as a nice break before the anticipated high-intensity films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret War. However, there’s been a significant reaction against rumors about Mephisto and Ghost Rider being the main antagonists in Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2026 movie. Instead, the street-level idea is gaining more support among fans.
The future of Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) may one day head towards an adaptation of “Devil’s Reign.” Although the exact shape of MCU remains uncertain after “Secret Wars,” if Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) doesn’t lose in “Born Again,” his term as New York City Mayor could pave the way for a more faithful “Devil’s Reign” portrayal later on. “Born Again” has been confirmed for a second season, but filming won’t start until March 2025. This means it will still come out before films like “Spider-Man 4” and “Secret Wars.” If the first season of “Born Again” doesn’t show Kingpin fully embracing “Devil’s Reign,” fans will have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the comics ahead of season 2.
