The sun has set over another part of the continually growing Star Wars universe, as Skeleton Crew concludes with an exciting flourish. With the wide-eyed excitement of Skeleton Crew wrapping up, the group of kids seems destined to return to their ordinary lives on At Attin. While fans are aware that Skeleton Crew was influenced by films like The Goonies and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, it appears that the final episode also paid tribute to Star Wars’ cinematic universe counterpart, akin to Marvel’s.
In the upcoming episode “The Real Good Guys” on January 14 for the show titled “Skeleton Crew,” there were real concerns that characters like Wim, Fern, KB, or Neel could suffer a sad goodbye, similar to some
Who Was Skeleton Crew’s Supervisor?
Immediately upon entering the world of At Attin in “Skeleton Crew”, it became evident that something was off. With the Empire’s fall and the absence of the New Republic, it seemed unusual that no significant authority was present. Instead, the planet was managed by a nondescript team of caretaker droids, while its inhabitants were engaged in secretive tasks under the enigmatic “Supervisor”. Keen-hearing fans recognized the voice of Stephen Fry when the Supervisor made an appearance earlier in the season, and anticipated seeing the beloved “Black Adder” actor in person. However, it wasn’t until episode 8 that the viewers got to lay eyes on the man controlling the scenes, but the Supervisor turned out to be much more than just a mysterious voice.
In a manner reminiscent of both “The Wizard of Oz” and “Wicked,” the Supervisor wasn’t a human ruler but an advanced AI system designed to manage the population of At Attin while maintaining secrecy about the planet’s existence from the rest of the world. It was rumored that the Supervisor could be Tak Rennod, but instead, the legendary pirate perished in his quest for the At Attin mint. The mythology within “Skeleton Crew” bore a resemblance to “The Goonies,” and much like the treasure in the 1985 movie, the treasure planet that Jod and his team were seeking was indeed genuine – they had found At Attin.
The Boss repeated that it had been ages since an envoy last stepped foot on the planet, implying that information about At Attin was closely guarded by the Galactic Republic’s top intelligence. Trying to deceive the Boss, Jod pretended to be a representative of the Jedi order, hoping to gain access to the mint. However, the Boss reminded him that according to the latest communication from the Galactic Republic, all Jedi were considered traitors. Given that Skeleton Crew’s chances for renewal seemed unlikely, it’s safe to say we won’t encounter the Boss again. In a swift move, Jod killed the Boss with his lightsaber.
Skeleton Crew’s Finale Mirrors She-Hulk
In the realm of AI and superheroes, I’ve noticed an intriguing parallel being drawn between my favorite show, “Skeleton Crew,” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” The climactic episode of She-Hulk, with its daring fourth-wall break, paid homage to Kevin Feige’s role as the MCU’s supreme authority. It was mind-blowing to see Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) burst through the Disney+ app and engage in a heated discussion with K.E.V.I.N., voicing her displeasure about the finale being overcrowded with Hulks.
On the other hand, “Skeleton Crew” doesn’t feature Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) expressing his frustration about a lack of Luke Skywalker appearances through the fourth wall. However, in this advanced age of AI, the twist involving the Supervisor resonates just as deeply.
It appears there are parallels in that, unlike what the TVA workers were led to believe, the Time Variance Authority overseen by Loki wasn’t controlled by all-powerful Time-Keepers. Instead, it seems that the supervisor from Skeleton Crew was just an AI adhering to protocol, not a puppet master like Kang the Conqueror variant acting as a villain.
Essentially, Skeleton Crew appears to draw elements from different Marvel Cinematic Universe series, showing both strengths and weaknesses. The newer characters echo the roles of Ms. Marvel and Agatha All Along, with Iman Vellani and Joe Locke as the main youthful actors. This alignment seems strategic to prepare the franchise for longevity, hinting that these characters might be part of the series for many years ahead.
A Space Odyssey,” although the Supervisor isn’t as malevolent as HAL 9000, with its glowing red eye design being a clear reference. However, unlike “2001” where the AI goes on a destructive rampage, “Skeleton Crew” doesn’t delve into horror like most Star Wars franchise productions, except for “The Acolyte” featuring zombie stormtroopers.
In a nod to its past, Star Wars has been recognized for drawing from various sources and its own history, evident in the similarities between George Lucas’ original trilogy and the Disney era launched by The Force Awakens. However, the current Star Wars lineup hasn’t quite managed to match the achievements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While Phase 5 of the MCU had its ups and downs with shows like Secret Invasion and The Marvels, projects such as Agatha All Along and Deadpool & Wolverine have given fans reason to be optimistic. Now, Star Wars is aiming to reclaim its charm by focusing on the Mandoverse era where Skeleton Crew is set. As of now, it’s unclear if Wim, Jod, and their companions will return for a second season of Skeleton Crew, but given the early ratings, it could turn out to be another less-than-spectacular series like The Book of Boba Fett.
