For thousands of years, Soul Reapers have managed the flow of souls, and while they generally prefer to maintain peace, they are always prepared to fight. Fans of Bleach have witnessed this firsthand through battles against Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends, then against Sosuke Aizen’s Arrancar army, and later, the Quincy empire. This wasn’t the first conflict between the Soul Reapers and the Quincy, however; they’ve clashed in battle before.
Throughout the centuries, Soul Reapers became masters of combat, skillfully using both zanpakuto and kido. Some even pioneered these fighting techniques, becoming legendary figures known as the most powerful warriors ever. They are the ultimate defense for the Gotei 13 and Soul Society, capable of stopping any enemy – even incredibly powerful villains like King Yhwach – in their tracks.
Senjumaru Shutara Weaves Fate With Her World-Shaking Bankai
The Schutzstaffel Didn’t Last Long Against Senjumaru’s Wrath
Senjumaru Shutara is remembered as the creator of the Soul Reaper uniforms, and this skill led to her joining the Royal Guard centuries ago. While she’s the most talented fashion designer in the afterlife, Senjumaru isn’t simply a tailor – members of the Royal Guard are always prepared for battle.
Senjumaru is incredibly fast and skilled, just like the other members of the Royal Guard, and her Bankai is truly remarkable. While her shikai, which manifests as countless needles, is already a powerful weapon, she’ll even sacrifice her allies as a last resort to unleash the devastating power of her Bankai. With it, she dominated the Schutzstaffel, defeating even the strongest Quincies until Uryu Ishida countered with The Antithesis – a truly exceptional ability in the world of Bleach.
Tenjiro Kirinji is an Expert Healer and Deadly Swordsman
Tenjiro Isn’t Gentle as a Practitioner of the Healing Arts
Everyone was blown away by Ichibe and Senjumaru during the fight at the Soul King’s palace, but I think people sometimes overlook Tenjiro Kirinji. He’s truly the master of healing – a really proud and quick-tempered guy, actually. It turns out he didn’t just use healing kido, he taught Retsu Unohana how to do it, and even invented that specific style of healing kido himself.
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Tenjiro saved Byakuya and Renji from certain death, and his healing abilities also prevented Oetsu from being killed by Askin’s Deathdealing technique. Tenjiro is incredibly quick, able to outmove even fast opponents like Sui-Feng, and his skill with a sword is as impressive as his healing powers.
Kenpachi Zaraki is a Peerless Berserker in the Gotei 13
Just One Day of Training Was All Central 46 Allowed For Him
For years, Captain Kenpachi Zaraki of the 11th squad fought without knowing the name of his spirit-summoning sword, relying on his incredible strength and stamina to defeat any opponent with special powers or weapons. The governing body, Central 46, was so worried about Kenpachi’s immense power that they limited his training to just one day, fearing that if he turned against them, no one could contain him.
During the intense Thousand-Year Blood War, Kenpachi faced a serious challenge, leading Captain Unohana to begin a deadly training session with him. Though he won, Kenpachi was heartbroken by Unohana’s death, but he did finally learn the name of his zanpakuto, Nozarashi, and unlock its shikai form. This pushed him to abandon his habit of holding back and fully unleash his power, allowing him to defeat powerful enemies like Gremmy and Gerard. He quickly mastered his bankai as well, becoming even stronger.
Sosuke Aizen Sought the Upper Limits of the Soul Reapers
Then, Aizen Went Beyond With the Hogyoku
As the main villain in Bleach, Captain Sosuke Aizen of the 5th Division had to be incredibly strong. Otherwise, the Soul Reapers would have easily defeated him. Aizen was always dissatisfied and wanted to become the most powerful being in the universe, surpassing all limitations. Simply being one of the strongest Soul Reapers wasn’t enough for him.

High Score: 0 —
During his time as a Captain in the Gotei 13, Aizen was superior to most due to his flawless hypnosis ability from Kyoka Suigetsu, which left opponents defenseless against his attacks. He also possessed exceptional swordsmanship and kido skills, easily defeating powerful foes like Sajin Komamura with a technique called Kurohitsugi. Combined with the Hogyoku, Aizen became virtually unbeatable, capable of only being barely captured, not truly defeated.
Oetsu Nimaiya Built a Zanpakuto Too Sharp For a Sheath
Nimaiya Doesn’t Fear Yhwach’s Elite Guard
In the final part of Bleach, Oetsu Nimaiya was more interesting as a teacher and explainer than as a combatant, despite his strength. He revealed the history of all zanpakuto to Ichigo, but insisted Ichigo fully grasp the nature of Zangetsu before beginning actual training. Oetsu believed Ichigo couldn’t be considered a true Soul Reaper without possessing an Asauchi.
Oetsu quickly demonstrated his skill as a swordsman and earned his place among the Royal Guard when battle arrived. His zanpakuto was incredibly sharp – so much so that it couldn’t be contained in a normal sheath. Instead, he carried it in a tank of liquid and unleashed its power against the Schutzstaffel.
Shigekuni Yamamoto Felt Ashamed That He Could Burn the World Down
Yamamoto’s Bankai Heralds the End Times
Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto is the strongest Soul Reaper in the Gotei 13, and he originally created the squads that make up the court guard. He once told Yhwach, a false king, that no Soul Reaper has ever surpassed his strength. While he was incredibly powerful, age and pride had begun to diminish his abilities. Surprisingly, Yamamoto refused Orihime’s offer to restore his missing left arm.
Even with his personal struggles, Yamamoto was consistently one of the most powerful Soul Reapers until his death, and he had the strength to prove it. The unexpected loss of Sasakibe deeply affected him, driving him to unleash his bankai, Zanka no Tachi, despite his reluctance to use such immense power. While his shikai alone could incinerate nearly anything, his bankai was devastating enough to almost defeat Yhwach and, if sustained, could potentially destroy the entire universe.
Kirio Hikifune Rivals Kisuke Urahara as an Inventor
Kirio Tricked Yhwach’s Team With Her Fake Battlefield
Kirio Hikifune is a member of the Royal Guard who prefers to support her allies rather than fight on the front lines, playing to her strengths and skills. Similar to Kisuke Urahara, she’s a talented scientist and previously commanded squad 12. In fact, she’s the one who created gigai. During Ichigo and Renji’s training, Kirio provided them with plenty of nourishing food to build up their spiritual energy and prepare them for the challenges ahead.
Kirio prefers using deception and traps when facing enemies like the Schutzstaffel, and she’s incredibly skilled at it – even powerful Quincy like Lille Barro and Askin can’t anticipate her moves. She fooled those elite warriors with a cleverly disguised battlefield, tricking them into relaxing their defenses and allowing the Royal Guard to launch a powerful surprise attack.
Shunsui Kyoraku Was the Only One Who Could Succeed Yamamoto
Shunsui is a Veteran With a Storybook Bankai
When King Yhwach and his Wandenreich finally returned seeking revenge, very few Soul Reapers had centuries of experience under their belts. Captain Shunsui Kyoraku of the 8th Division was one of the few. As a long-serving veteran, he’d witnessed and accomplished so much that his skills, instincts, and strength were unmatched.
Shunsui often doesn’t use his full strength, even against strong opponents like Coyote Starrk. He held back even when the Wandenreich invaded the Soul Society. But everything changed when he fought Lille Barro. He unleashed his incredibly powerful Bankai and almost defeated Lille with a single, unavoidable attack. Had Lille not been divinely protected, he would have been instantly killed, which demonstrates just how powerful Shunsui’s attack was.
Ichibe Hyosube Granted the Gift of Names to All
Ichibe’s Shikai and Bankai Are the Stuff of Nightmares
Ichibe Hyosube, alongside Senjumaru, was a dominant force in the battle against the strongest Quincies, and many consider him the most powerful fighter present. He holds a unique place in history as the one who originally named everything – including the terms zanpakuto, shikai, and bankai, as well as giving each spirit-cutting sword its individual name. Ichibe isn’t hesitant to rename things, or people, whenever he sees fit.
Ichibe’s unique sword lets him change a person’s name, which in turn changes their abilities – he even weakened Yhwach, the series’ main villain, by renaming him ‘Black Ant’. If that wasn’t enough, Ichibe could use another ability to drain an opponent’s power and completely destroy them. Yhwach really needed a lucky break to survive those attacks towards the end of the Bleach series.
Kisuke Urahara is Like a Wizard With His Elite Kido
Kisuke’s Late-Game Bankai Blew Bleach Fans Away
I remember when Ichigo first encountered Kisuke Urahara, the shopkeeper with the hat. Right away, it was obvious he was hiding a lot, and that he was incredibly powerful. Over time, Kisuke gradually revealed his abilities, and Bleach fans quickly came to see him as a truly formidable former Captain and a brilliant scientist. He’s on the same level as characters like Kirio Hikifune and Mayuri Kurotsuchi – so much so that Yhwach specifically identified him as one of the five most powerful beings. Honestly, Kisuke’s clever tactics definitely caught Yhwach’s attention.
Kisuke’s fighting style is a unique blend of abilities similar to Mayuri and Aizen. He’s incredibly skilled with kido spells, matching Aizen’s power, and a swordsman who rivals the best in the Gotei 13. He also uses clever tricks and gadgets to ensure he can always escape danger. Like Shunsui Kyoraku, Kisuke doesn’t typically unleash his full potential unless absolutely necessary. He’s a late-game bankai user, only revealing his zanpakuto’s full power during the final battles against the Schutzstaffel in Bleach.
