According to a recent announcement from SEGA, the global earnings at the box office for the third Sonic movie in the series have exceeded an impressive $425 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Surpasses Previous Film’s Record

On December 20, 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was launched in the United States. In its first three days, it garnered a box office revenue of approximately $60.1 million dollars. This opening was the largest for the Sonic the Hedgehog series on an international scale. The movie topped the charts in more than 30 countries, such as the U.K., Mexico, Italy, Australia, Poland, Malaysia, UAE, Turkey, Philippines, Panama, and Argentina, to name a few.

The movie premiered in Japan, SEGA’s homeland, on the last day of December last year and has grossed more than 188.2 million yen so far, exceeding the earnings of its predecessor and establishing a new record for the series in Japan.

The game company, SEGA, has announced the release date for the next Sonic the Hedgehog film installment. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will debut in theaters on March 19, 2027. At this time, they haven’t revealed any other details about it.

The “Sonic the Hedgehog” film series is based on Sega’s popular video game franchise and follows the adventures of Sonic, the fastest hedgehog on Earth. In the second installment, released in 2022, a new character named Knuckles, a mysterious dark hero, makes his movie debut. The third film brings Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails together to take on Shadow as they continue their adventures.

To date, the global box office earnings from all three Sonic movies have surpassed $1 billion. Given their enormous financial triumph, it’s likely that we will witness additional Sonic films in the future. It wouldn’t shock me if SEGA decided to bring other game franchises to the big screen as well.
