Kingdom Hearts 4 Teases Appearance At Tokyo Game Show

Tokyo Game Show recently released a teaser hinting that we might see more about Kingdom Hearts 4 at the event. Tokyo Game Show is a major gaming convention, similar in size and importance to events like Gamescom and PAX. Because it’s held in Japan, it heavily features Japanese game companies – including Square Enix, who is currently developing Kingdom Hearts 4. Next year’s show will be extra special as it’s the 30th anniversary, and organizers are planning the biggest show yet with live, translated broadcasts. The convention runs from September 17th to 21st.

Kingdom Hearts 4 was first announced in April 2022 as part of the series’ 20th anniversary. The announcement came at the end of a special presentation that also revealed the now-removed offline version of Kingdom Hearts Dark Road and the canceled mobile game, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Fans were worried about the future of Kingdom Hearts 4, especially since the other games shown in the same short video had been discontinued. However, Square Enix has repeatedly stated that development of Kingdom Hearts 4 is continuing smoothly, even though they haven’t released any new trailers recently.

Tokyo Game Show Hints At Kingdom Hearts 4

The official Tokyo Game Show Twitter account shared an image of a loading screen with the date “2026.05.12” and the message “Coming Soon,” sparking excitement online. Fans quickly noticed the image’s font is strikingly similar to that used in the Kingdom Hearts series, and the green color of the loading bar matches the health bars in the main Kingdom Hearts games. With it having been four years since the first trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, fans are eagerly anticipating news about Sora and his Disney friends.

The image in question is actually a stock graphic available for purchase from Adobe, titled “Loading Screen with Lime Green Progress Bar Vector.” This indicates it wasn’t specifically designed to look like Kingdom Hearts 4 or the Kingdom Hearts series. While the social media team might have chosen it because of its similar style, it could just be a random coincidence. In September 2025, Kingdom Hearts 4 director Tetsuya Nomura stated that development was going smoothly, but he didn’t offer any specific details, implying there’s no new public information to share at this time. Regardless of whether Kingdom Hearts 4 is the game in question, we’ll learn more about what will be revealed at Tokyo Game Show on May 12, 2026.

Development on Kingdom Hearts 4 started in 2020, shortly after the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. The announcement trailer showed both story cutscenes and gameplay, all looking incredibly detailed. While the Kingdom Hearts series usually has a cartoonish style, Kingdom Hearts 4 seems to be going for a more realistic, yet still stylized, look – similar to what was done in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The idea for Kingdom Hearts 4 actually dates back to 2005, and it was announced six years after Kingdom Hearts 3 came out. If reports of a 2026 release are true, it would mean this game was developed much faster than previous main entries in the series.

While a recent post doesn’t confirm Kingdom Hearts 4 will be at Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix is almost certain to be there. They regularly attend the event, and have already announced they’ll be showcasing games like Octopath Traveler 0, Killer Inn, and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales at the 2025 show. Although the next announcement might not be what Kingdom Hearts fans want to hear, there’s still time for a surprise before the event in four months.
