Phil Spencer’s Bold Move: Ninja Gaiden 4 Collaboration with PlatinumGames!

Summary

  • Phil Spencer suggested that PlatinumGames join Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja for Ninja Gaiden 4 during a meeting to discuss the project.
  • PlatinumGammes is known for its work on the Bayonetta series and Nier: Automata.
  • Ninja Gaiden 4 is expected to be released later in 2025.

It appears that the collaboration for Ninja Gaiden 4 between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames was initiated by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. The year 2025 looks promising for fans of Ninja Gaiden, as a remastered version of Ninja Gaiden 2 from 2008, called Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, was announced and released shortly after the Xbox Developer Direct 2025 livestream on January 23. To add to the excitement, it was also disclosed that Ninja Gaiden 4 is currently in development and is expected to launch later this year.

The upcoming game, titled “Ninja Gaiden 4”, marks the first major installment in the series since “Ninja Gaiden 3” released back in 2012. Notably, Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo are handling its development under Xbox Game Studios. To enhance the action-packed experience, a seasoned developer specializing in fast-paced games, PlatinumGames, has also joined forces with these studios. This studio is renowned for creating the “Bayonetta” series, “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance”, and “Nier: Automata”, to name just a few of their many acclaimed titles.

It’s widely believed among gamers that PlatinumGames is an ideal candidate for creating Ninja Gaiden 4, and they might be taken aback to learn it was Phil Spencer who initially suggested bringing them onto the project. In a recent conversation with Game Watch (as translated by VGC), Team Ninja producer Fumihiko Yasuda disclosed that the head of Xbox proposed PlatinumGames collaborate with Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja on Ninja Gaiden 4, following a meeting between Koei Tecmo president Hisashi Koinuma and PlatinumGames president Atsushi Inaba to discuss the project.

Phil Spencer Suggested That PlatinumGames Help With Ninja Gaiden 4

Previously, Team Ninja had been considering making a new Ninja Gaiden game for quite some time but struggled to finalize any concrete plans for the project. It was during a meeting between Hasishi Koinuma and Atsushi Inaba, who are close friends, along with PlatinumGames‘ expertise in high-octane action games that eventually led to the development of Ninja Gaiden 4. Additionally, Phil Spencer confirmed his involvement in the game this week, mentioning that he has been trying to revive the Ninja Gaiden series since approximately 2017.

Ninja Gaiden 4

The focus of Ninja Gaiden 4 will shift towards a fresh lead character, Yakumo, while the series icon, Ryu Hayabusa, is set for a comeback as a primary character. The developers are incorporating innovative traversal techniques that enable players to move using wires and rails within their surroundings. Combat promises to be as intense as ever, with fresh skills being included alongside traditional Ninja Gaiden moves. As of now, the most precise prediction for its release is Fall 2025, but Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can enjoy it on launch day when it eventually drops later this year.
