This journey unfolds within the expansive setting of Hogwarts Castle, the famous village of Hogsmeade, and surrounding wizarding communities.
It’s fascinating to note that many characters within this timeframe share close ties with well-known wizarding families and educators, providing valuable links to Harry’s storyline. Additionally, there are a multitude of captivating and mysterious background characters who truly deserve their moment in the limelight.
8. Gerbold Ollivander
The Wand Chooses The Wizard
- House: Ravenclaw
- Found In: Ollivanders, Hogsmeade
- Voiced By: Enn Reitel
In the magical realm, none surpass the esteem and admiration accorded to the Ollivanders, even in ‘Hogwarts Legacy’. Initially, players find their wands choosing them, setting the stage for the game. Later, during the main quest titled ‘Visit to Hogsmeade Village’, players venture to Ollivanders and personalize their wand, deciding its flexibility, core, and type of wood. Gerbold Ollivander is a pure-blood wizard who was the grandfather of the renowned Garrick Ollivander in the Harry Potter chronology. Gerbold’s son, Gervaise Ollivander, fell deeply in love with a muggle-born witch after she visited him for a new wand.
Gerbold was the one who initially proposed the idea, which later became a common belief among all Ollivanders, that wands made of cedar wood are superior and can’t be outmatched by any witch or wizard. Furthermore, he strongly asserted that those selected by a fir-wood wand would repeatedly be rescued from life-threatening situations, whereas witches and wizards with wands of other types wouldn’t have the same chance for survival.
7. Eldritch Diggory
A Pioneer of Aurors
- House: Hufflepuff
- Found In: Hufflepuff Common Room
- Voiced By: Matthew Waterson
As a proud Hufflepuff fan, I find myself often greeting Eldritch Diggory, the esteemed portrait gracing our common room entrance. If I’m lucky enough to be sorted into the noble Hufflepuff house at the start of my game, I get the chance to engage with him. Eldritch, you see, was once the Minister of Magic, known for his powerful poplar wand and groundbreaking initiatives. He was the first to champion and fully back the Auror Recruitment Programme, setting a precedent that still resonates today.
In the Harry Potter narrative, Eldritch’s lineage – specifically his son Amos and grandson Cedric – play significant roles. It’s interesting to note that the name ‘Eldritch’ implies a connection to something mysterious or extraterrestrial.
6. Poppy Sweeting
Gerald’s Biggest Fan
- Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
- Found in: Beasts Class
- Voiced By: Alice Haldane
In Hogwarts Legacy, no character shows as much fondness and concern for creatures as Poppy Sweeting does. Poppy, a gentle and reserved Hufflepuff student, has an extraordinary bond with the diverse creatures players encounter in the game. This special connection stems from her past, where her parents, Violet and Angus, were notorious poachers. Growing up amidst the chaos of poacher camps instilled within Poppy a deep-seated loathing for the cruelty and mistreatment that humans often inflict on innocent animals.
Despite Poppy Sweeting being part of many adventures, it’s always the player who steers and guides each expedition as the main decision-maker. Poppy, however, is instrumental in teaching players how to care for magical creatures, such as grooming and feeding them, and introducing them to their first Hippogriff. If you pay close attention, during your initial trip to Hogsmeade with either Sebastian or Natsai, you might overhear a group of Hogwarts students pointing out Hippogriffs in the sky, hinting that Poppy is likely also present.
5. Nerida Roberts
The One Connection To The Merpeople
- Hogwarts House:
- Found In: Boathouse
- Voiced By: Holly J. Barrett
In “Hogwarts Legacy,” players may meet Nerida Roberts should they decide to aid in her mission to recover a Mermaid Artifact, a gift conferred upon her by the Merpeople.
In the game, it’s unfortunate that players don’t interact directly with the Merpeople community. However, there are hints about them, such as the moving statue exhibit in the Central Hall and potentially, in the Slytherin common room entrance. Nerida is the primary link between the player and the underwater realm of mermaids and mermen for many players, who have expressed disappointment that more isn’t revealed about this intriguing species.
4. Aesop Sharp
Enigmatic Potions Professor
- Hogwarts House: Slytherin
- Found In: Potions Classroom
- Voiced By: Matthew Waterson
Professor Aesop Sharp is indeed a mystery. In the final fight against Ranrok, a fighter troll might have overpowered even the most versatile and proficient player without his assistance. Prior to becoming Potions Master during the time of Hogwarts Legacy, he served in the Ministry of Magic as a renowned auror. This career shift was sparked by a mission gone wrong; Sharp sustained a severe leg injury, while his partner met an untimely demise due to dark magic.
In the climactic battle of the Keeper’s Caverns, Aesop Sharp – a modest yet radiantly intelligent individual – joined forces with Eleazar Fig (rest in peace), bravely battling two formidable troll adversaries. Together, they tirelessly defended wizardkind until Ranrok was ultimately defeated.
3. Chiyo Kogawa
Accomplished Flying Instructor
- Hogwarts House:
- Found In: Flying Lawn
- Voiced By: Karen Maruyama
Simultaneously impressed and somewhat disgruntled with the student following an unsuccessful flying lesson, Professor Kogawa showed a mix of sternness and dedication, much like Madame Hooch. With trust and honor as her guiding principles, Professor Kogawa, who had previously served in the Japanese Ministry of Magic, began her teaching career at Hogwarts.
In a playful response that echoes player frustration, Professor Kogawa voices her disapproval over the absence of Quidditch matches and adventures in Hogwarts Legacy. As an esteemed flying instructor, she holds great reverence for brooms, often conversing with them and expressing gratitude for their obedience.
2. Garreth Weasley
Red-Haired Potions Major
- Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
- Found In: Outside The Great Hall
- Voiced By: Joseph Burdge
In the enchanting world of Harry Potter, and further within the Hogwarts Legacy, players delightfully encounter not just one, but two beloved members of the Weasley clan: Professor Weasley and Garreth.
Initially, players will come across Garreth within the Potion’s Classroom. Similar to Fred and George Weasley, who were known for their rule-bending antics, Garreth attempts to lead the player astray by pilfering a fwooper feather for his clandestine experiment. Being a nephew of Professor Matilda Weasley, he shares a striking resemblance to the Weasley family in appearance and demeanor during the Harry Potter era, with his red hair and mischievous attitude.
1. Dinah Hecat
Not At All What She Appears
- Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw
- Found In: Defense Against the Dark Arts Classroom
- Voiced By: Jane Windsor
Professor Dinah Hecat is a highly skilled and proficient expert in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Given that the storyline in Hogwarts Legacy unfolds prior to Lord Voldemort’s reign, it can be presumed that she manages to maintain her position for a longer duration than the usual one-year tenure.
1847 saw the birth of Dinah Hecat, undeniably the most philosophical character in Hogwarts Legacy. Throughout her career in the Department of Mysteries, where she remained a secretive Unspeakable, time seemed to accelerate, significantly aging her physical form. Despite seeming old and frail to players, Dinah Hecat is actually far younger than she appears.
