Summary
- High expectations for playable characters in Final Fantasy can lead to disappointment due to limitations in combat effectiveness.
- Powerful-looking characters may fall short in terms of stats, abilities, or equipment, making them less effective in late-game scenarios.
- Some characters, despite initial promise, fail to live up to expectations, leading to disappointment in their combat performance.
The “Final Fantasy” series, renowned and widely recognized, offers some of the most outstanding Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs). These games take players on epic journeys, initially starting them off as novice explorers who gradually grow in strength, ultimately capable of saving the world.
It makes sense that you’d want to utilize party members who are robust and capable in combat. At the outset, certain playable characters might seem suitable. However, it doesn’t take much time before their vulnerabilities become apparent, being revealed not only to the player but also to their adversaries.
8. Tellah
A Once-Powerful Mage Who’s Past His Prime

In the game “Final Fantasy 4”, Tellah is a captivating character who embarks on a mission to find his granddaughter, tragically losing her due to Golbez’s wickedness. Overwhelmed by grief and seeking retribution, he vows revenge against the villain and joins forces with Cecil, demonstrating remarkable abilities in casting Black Magic spells.
It doesn’t take long for players to understand that this once-powerful mage is no longer at his best. His maximum MP (Magic Points) is limited to 90, falling short of what’s needed to cast Meteor, and as the story advances, he becomes less useful. Towards the end, after reaching Golbez, he drains his life energy to cast this potent spell several times, dealing significant damage to the villain at the expense of his own life, entrusting his revenge to Cecil.
7. Gogo
Despite Being A Malleable Character, His Subpar Stats And Lack Of Equipment Make Him Less Effective In Combat

In the realm of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 6 boasts the most extensive roster of playable characters seen in this series so far. A few of these characters are not essential, as players must venture into the Zone Eater to tackle an optional dungeon and ultimately save Gogo.
Initially, the Mimic appears awe-inspiring due to its power to adopt any individual’s skills. However, players will quickly discover its limitations. The Mimic’s stats are relatively low and it is restricted in the types of weapons it can use, which are used to compensate for its adaptable nature, resulting in it being weaker than many would expect.
6. Vincent Valentine
Not Being Able To Control His Monster Form Isn’t Great

Vincent exudes an impressive authority that suggests he’s a formidable force within our group, capable of standing strong even in battle. His long-range abilities, however, make him ideal for strategic positions and allow us to deal substantial damage without putting the vampire at risk. Yet, there are certain constraints to his power.
His statistics may not meet fan expectations, and during his transformation, a Limit Break takes control away from the player. Obtaining his Ultimate Weapon, Death Penalty, demands an excessive amount of grinding from players to achieve decent damage output, which turns out to be a larger investment than anticipated by fans.
5. Quistis Trepe
Supposedly A Gifted Instructor, But Her Limit Break Pales In Comparison To The Other Party Members

As a gamer, I was eagerly anticipating Quistis, the prodigy SeeD instructor who earned her spot at such a young age. Her swift whip moves and ability to bring enemies down were exhilarating at first, but soon enough, it became clear that there were limitations to her abilities.
Generally speaking, it’s widely acknowledged among gamers that Quistis’ Limit Break isn’t as strong as the others in the game. Once players can freely use Aura, Quistis becomes less impactful in the later stages of play. Other than Mighty Guard, her other abilities aren’t particularly remarkable and seem to fall short compared to all the other Limit Breaks available in the game, which is unfortunate.
4. Strago Magus
A Blue Mage Who Isn’t As Strong As The Other Magic Users In The Game, Even Though He’s More Experienced

As players arrive at Thamasa, they unlock the presence of two powerful mages. Notably, one of these mages, Strago, exhibits a strength far surpassing that of his granddaughter. His Blue Magic abilities are nothing short of astonishing, offering an exhilarating experience as enemies are struck with extraordinary, distinct attacks.
As players advance, they’ll come to understand the constraints of Strago. His statistical growth is mediocre at best, and this is further hindered by the fact that the most effective magical enhancement gear is exclusively allocated to female characters in the game.
3. Amarant Coral
Looks Intimidating But Isn’t All That Strong In Combat

In a manner reminiscent of Wolverine’s rugged charm, many players would be eager to have Amarant join their team, intrigued by his knack for swiftly defeating enemies. Regrettably, Amarant’s statistics are not particularly impressive, and he is often criticized as the least effective party member within the game.
Although Amarant appears menacing with his ominous demeanor, his physical attacks are not particularly impressive, suggesting that he’s more effective when used in a combined support role. This contrast between his intimidating persona and his underwhelming combat abilities makes him one of the most letdown characters in Final Fantasy 9, leaving players feeling quite disappointed by a wide margin.
2. Lulu
Competent As A Black Mage, But Her Overdrive Is A Massive Disappointment

As a gamer, I gotta say, Lulu’s a bit of a debate among us players, but her battles-tide struggles seem to be more about her lethargic Overdrive abilities rather than her overall combat prowess. Black Mages are undeniably valuable in the heat of battle, and Lulu fits right in with that crowd.
Yet, when her Overdrive meter is fully charged, players are confronted with a challenging minigame requiring them to rapidly spin the control stick to launch multiple spells. Typically, the spell employed in this situation isn’t particularly powerful, and despite their best efforts, players will struggle to reach their desired number of casts by spinning the control stick as fast as possible.
1. Gau
His Rage Ability Makes Him A Wild Card Who Is Unreliable In Tough Battles

Fans might find it intriguing to learn about an aspect where you discover enemy skills and transform Gau into a beast-like adversary during battles. Initially controlling this character in the Veldt, players can teach him certain Rages to unleash potent abilities in fights.
As the game Final Fantasy 6 advances, Gau’s lack of control and mediocre Rage abilities make him less dependable during combat. If players are comfortable using an erratic character, this free-spirited kid is likely to fall short in a boss fight more frequently than not.
