In the realm of Demon Slayer, each demon possesses a distinctive ability called a Blood Demon Art, including the enigmatic and elusive King of Demons, Muzan Kibutsuji. However, due to his preference for secrecy and the high risk associated with confronting him, few have any knowledge of what his Blood Demon Art entails.

What’s interesting about Muzan’s Blood Demon Art is that it’s not entirely exclusive. In fact, this ability is inherent in all demons, although they can only manipulate it to a very minor extent. To put it another way, we could refer to Muzan’s Blood Demon Art as Biokinesis, a term used to describe the power to control and manipulate living matter.

What Is Biokinesis?

Muzan’s Body Is a Weapon. Literally

Muzan’s Blood Demon Art offers him extraordinary bodily manipulation, allowing him to mold his physical form as he wishes. This power, known as biokinesis, grants him the ability to reshape his body, rearrange internal organs, and even create new ones for defensive or offensive purposes. In comparison to other media, Muzan can be likened to a Tyranid from the Warhammer 40k universe; an entity capable of swiftly adapting and evolving its physique to meet its immediate requirements.

In the anime “Demon Slayer,” the character Muzan Kuzo can alter his physical form on various occasions. Typically, he presents himself as a man, but occasionally transforms into a female or child figure, thus complicating the task of his adversaries in identifying and locating him.

In the Infinity Castle Arc, Muzan Kibutsuji, if you’re okay with a bit of manga spoilers, demonstrates various applications of his biokinesis. After receiving Lady Tamayo’s antidote, which was meant to turn him human, he transforms into a massive cocoon that neutralizes the effect. This is why Muzan is immune to decapitation, a fate that typically befalls other demons. He possesses an unusual physiology: seven hearts and five brains distributed throughout his body. To defeat him, all these vital points must be simultaneously struck by Nichirin. In the impending battle, he’s also expected to create numerous whip-like blades that extend from his upper body, each one controllable independently.

An unsettling demonstration of biokinesis is Muzan’s capacity to shatter into numerous fragments in order to evade danger and subsequently reassemble himself. This power was displayed in the Demon Slayer manga chapter 187, “Innocent Person”, when he utilized it against Yoriichi to escape from the legendary Demon Slayer. It appears that, during this state of fragmentation, all, or at least a significant majority, of his fragments must be annihilated to ultimately eliminate him. Yoriichi mentioned that he had only managed to sever 1500 out of 1800 pieces, and the remaining 300, which he estimated to be approximately the size of a human head when combined, were sufficient for Muzan’s survival.

Biokinesis in Other Demons

In simpler terms, most demons possess some degree of biokinesis, a unique ability that allows them to manipulate their bodies, albeit not as proficiently as Muzan. Some demons, like Gyokko, the Upper Rank Five demon, have integrated this power into their Blood Demon Art. For instance, Gyokko can manifest multiple baby-like arms from various parts of his body, or make it seem like he only has two when he usually doesn’t. Moreover, Gyokko can squeeze himself into pots to teleport quickly between them.

In the eighth episode of “Demon Slayer,” titled “The Smell of Enchanting Blood,” Susamaru, a demon, employed temari handballs as weapons against Tanjiro and his companions. Notably, she had the ability to manipulate her body’s shape. Her unique Blood Demon Art allowed her to create lethal temaris that she could either throw or kick towards her adversaries. To boost this skill, she sprouted an extra pair of arms on each side, enabling her to swiftly launch multiple temaris in quick succession.

The Limits of Muzan’s Biokinesis

He Can’t Just Create Anything. He’s a Demon, Not a God

Contrary to popular perception, Muzan doesn’t possess omnipotence. One weakness in his biokinesis is that he can only transform his body and organs into various organic substances, which means he can’t convert his skin into diamond for protection against Nichirin weapons wielded by Demon Slayers. These weapons have the potential to slice through anything Muzan’s biokinesis creates, given that they are handled by a skilled Slayer.

A significant constraint for Muzan is that no amount of bodily modification can render sunlight harmless to him. Draping himself with excessive hair or adding more layers of skin won’t help, as the essence of him remains unchanged. Any structure he creates using his body will disintegrate upon contact with sunlight because it still originates from him. It appears that whatever inherent weakness makes Muzan susceptible to sunlight cannot be addressed by modifying or generating something within his own physique.
