In their recent announcements, both Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix have shared details about certain summoned entities and antagonists set to appear in the forthcoming collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy.
In this crossover between Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering, there will be an entire collection of cards, which includes four Commander Decks. These decks are named after different Final Fantasy games: a deck centered around Terra from Final Fantasy 6, a deck focusing on Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, a deck featuring Tidus from Final Fantasy 10, and a deck protected by Y’shtola in Final Fantasy 14.
On the official YouTube channel of Magic: The Gathering, a fresh video has been posted showcasing upcoming cards and explaining the integration of Final Fantasy’s summon mechanism within the trading card game format.
Summons Are Magic: The Gathering’s First Creature Summons.
In the game Magic: The Gathering, the Summoned creatures are initially introduced as Saga creatures. Saga cards have unique abilities that unfold over multiple draws, mirroring the gradual process of summoning a creature onto the battlefield.
In certain cards within the collection, you’ll find a special power that allows them to undergo a transformation. This aligns with the recurring theme in these games where villains unleash their most powerful form, such as “One-Winged Angel.” So far, we’ve seen Emet-Selch transform into Hades and Garland becoming Chaos. Interestingly, even hero characters can undergo this transformation, with Cecil from Final Fantasy 4 transitioning from Dark Knight to Paladin as an example.
In addition to the regular artwork, the Final Fantasy collection will showcase alternative versions inspired by historical series drawings. Notable artists like Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshitaka Amano have contributed pieces that are likely to be highly sought after by collectors.
In Magic: The Gathering, the shifting cards and Saga creatures pave the way for countless creative applications of the Final Fantasy universe. So far, Shiva is the only summon unveiled, but iconic characters such as Ifrit, Ramuh, and Bahamut are anticipated to follow soon.
