Fun fact: Originally, The Last of Us Part II was planned with a multiplayer mode called The Last of Us Online. This was initially referred to as “Factions”, but Naughty Dog decided to scrap it in the year 2023.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always been intrigued by the mystery surrounding the unlaunched title. Interestingly, ex-PlayStation head, Shuhei Yoshida, has had the privilege of giving it a spin, and from what I gather, his words were, “It was fantastic!
The Last of Us Online Was Canceled Because Naughty Dog Wanted To Develop Intergalactic Instead

During an appearance on the Sacred Symbols podcast (which requires a subscription), Yoshida discussed Naughty Dog’s live service game as mentioned by Push Square. “The concept for The Last of Us Online originated from Naughty Dog, and they were eager to bring it to life,” Yoshida stated. “However, Bungie shared with them the requirements for creating live service games, and Naughty Dog understood, ‘Oh dear, we can’t handle that! If we proceed, we won’t be able to create Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.’ So, it seems they underestimated the scope of the project,” Yoshida commented.
During the same interview, Yoshida clarified that first-party studios opting for live-service games wasn’t something they were compelled to do, but rather a joint choice made between the developers and Sony, implying a collaborative decision-making process.
Rather than pursuing The Last of Us Online, Naughty Dog decided to focus on the development of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet instead. This interstellar action game was unveiled during The Game Awards last year.
Inspired by anime properties like Cowboy Bebop and Akira.
Regarding similar ongoing-play games, Sony has lately decided to scrap two in-house productions that were presumably centered around God of War.
Although Yoshida commended Naughty Dog’s abandoned project, it appears that the ex-Sony executive isn’t a proponent of the PlayStation division focusing excessively on live-service games. In an earlier interview this year, Yoshida expressed that if he were still in charge, he would oppose the push towards live service games by Sony.
